Focusing on thermodynamic analysis--from the requisite first law to more sophisticated applications--and engine design, here is a modern introduction to internal combustion engines and their mechanics. It covers the many types of internal combustion engines, including spark ignition, compression ignition, and stratified charge engines, and examines processes, keeping equations of state simple by assuming constant specific heats. Equations are limited to heat engines and later applied to combustion engines. Topics include realistic equations of state, stoichiometry, predictions of chemical equilibrium, engine performance criteria, and friction, which is discussed in terms of the hydrodynamic theory of lubrication and experimental methods such as dimensional analysis.

This completely revised text applies the principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer to internal combustion engines. Every chapter has been reorganized and updated to clearly present current modeling and analysis techniques. The Second Edition includes new material on yhermodynamic modeling, intake and exhaust flow, friction, combustion, alternative fuels, emissions, and instrumentation. The book contains many wordked examples that illustrate important aspects of internal combustion engines.

About the Author
Dr. Colin R. Ferguson received his M.S. and Ph.D. (1975) degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He taught thermal science courses at Purdue University for twelve years, performing research and publishing in the internal combustion engines area, and is currently living in California. He is an Adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University.

Dr. Allan T. Kirkpatrick, P.E., received his B.S. (1972) and Ph.D. (1981) degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has been at Colorado State University since 1980. Dr. Kirkpatrick teaches and performs research in the engines and buildings areas. He has received teaching and research awards from Colorado State University, the American Society for Engineering Education, and Sigma Xi. Dr. Kirkpatrick gas worked both in industry and in national laboratories on energy related research. He has published two books, over 75 conference and journal articles, and has one patent, Dr. Kirkpatrick is currently a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University.

I had to buy this book for a class.

First the positive aspects of this book. It's somewhat recent (2001), which makes it at least a decade newer than Internal Combustion Engine Fundamentals (Heywood) and The Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice: Vol. 1 - 2nd Edition, Revised: Thermodynamics, Fluid Flow, Performance and Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice: Vol. 2 - 2nd Edition, Revised: Combustion, Fuels, Materials, Design (the Taylor books). It has more information about computer modeling, which is a reflection of the times. It also has references to the publisher's website to use various online tools and references, which I don't like at all, but someone probably likes.

Now the negative: First; its main advantage, which is that it's new, isn't much of one. The only things that have changed appreciably in engines in the last 50 years are metallurgy and controls, neither of which are addressed in this book. For the price of this book, one could by either Heywood or the Taylor set, both of which are much more detailed. The page counts are a clue; this book weighs in at under 400 pages, while Heywood is 900 and the Taylor set is over a thousand. This book frequently references Heywood and Taylor, so why not go straight to the source? This book, as other reviewers have noted, has extensive errata. If you don't like to proofread textbooks, buy Heywood or Taylor.

In sum, don't buy this book, but if it's a gift, probably don't throw it out.

Not many books out there like this one

There aren't many books about internal combustion engines so this may be the best book for your money. The information in the book is good but sometimes uses conventions that are more confusing than helpful. The book mostly just needs to be updated. It's a good reference to put on your shelf.

Very boring book in my opinion

This book doesnt even make sense now. I read it a long time ago . It's mostly about labeling people instead of telling them how to change. There's little advice but now days you can find this and much more in a bigger book with more info on how to change while motivating you to do it too. Very boring book in my opinion.

Simple, and beautiful

This book is absolutely incredible. Sure it is a tad pricy for a little song book, but it is well worth it. If you are not familiar to HJL, simply search helen jane long embers on youtube and listen to the entire album. This song book is note for note identical to how she plays it. As far as difficulty, the majority of the songs are probably intermediate level, probably best for 3 year + students, with many songs hanging out at around 2 flats/sharps, and one or two stray ones in key of c, and one or two advanced songs that have 4 flats or so. Honestly, not too difficult, but definitely not for a beginner. In the end, simply amazing beautiful pieces of music. As a 12th year pianist, I feel like the music is fairly simple, but its so brilliantly simplistic and beautiful that you cannot quit playing it. I was so happy I bought her other two books immediately.

This is the second copy of this book I have owned - I bought the other with my first pregnancy almost 9 years ago! It is put together almost like a textbook which is great for science buffs like me. I prefer a real, clinical look at my pregnancy over all of the mushy mom-to-mom stuff in other books where women just tell other women about the way THEY parent is far superior. This is a great book for understanding your body and simple solutions unbiased by lifestyle or preference!
