Review

"Camaro. Mustang. Charger. Just hearing the names of these and other classic "muscle cars" from the 1960s and 1970s revs the hearts and minds of many. Automobile journalist Mueller (The Complete Book of Corvette; The Complete Book of Mustang) further ignites this obsession by offering a complete chronological breakdown of every muscle car make and model, detailing horsepower, transmission, torque, units of production, and more. While Mueller doesn't include price guides for what has become a popular collectibles car market, his running commentary offers insights into these cars' ramp-up to mass production, their fade-out owing to emissions concerns, and various "back from the dead" revivals. VERDICT High-octane fodder for car enthusiasts." - Library Journal

I am giving this book 5 stars on behalf of the friend I gave it to as a Christmas gift! I know nothing about the subject, however, my friend is very passionate about muscle cars, and she and her husband owned a few of these cars over the years. They were raving about the book and the photos of the cars and even found a couple tidbits of info. that they didn't know. In addition, the book is nicely mad so they are definitely leaving this as their coffee table book.

Review
"An impressive achievement. The most comprehensive, comprehensible history of the American 1960s that I know."--Todd Gitlin, New York University
"When two accomplished historians of the caliber of Isserman and Kazin turn their talents to a survey of the Sixties, the result is an engrossing narrative and a highly intelligent analysis of the era's cultural, political, and social events. I found myself eagerly turning pages to see how they
would handle the decade's key actors, moments, and trends, and was always rewarded with judicious and insightful treatments."--Lizabeth Cohen, Harvard University
"America Divided is an indispensable history of the 1960s. Isserman and Kazin grapple with the abundant paradoxes of an era of youthful activism and resurgent conservatism, of sexual revolution and religious revival, of naive political optimism and growing distrust in government. Their compelling
narrative helps make sense of the most contentious political and cultural debates of our time."-- Thomas J. Sugrue, University of Pennsylvania
"America Divided: The Civil War of the 1960s is a riveting read, brimming with lively anecdotes, original insights, sharp analysis, and scrupulous scholarship. It is, far and away, the most compelling single volume history of the 1960s currently available. A superb book."--Douglas Brinkley,
University of New Orleans
"This is the finest and most comprehensive history of The Sixties ever written. Professors Isserman and Kazin skillfully combine insightful analysis and captivating narrative to demonstrate how and why that political and cultural civil war haunts us yet. Their book is therefore more than another
history: it is an act ofengaged citizenship."--Nelson Lichtenstein, University of Virginia

In December 1941, as American forces tallied the dead at Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt gathered with his senior military counselors to plan an ambitious counterstrike against the heart of the Japanese Empire: Tokyo. Four months later, on April 18, 1942, sixteen U.S. Army bombers under the command of daredevil pilot Jimmy Doolittle lifted off from the deck of the USS Hornet on a one-way mission to pummel the enemy’s factories, refineries, and dockyards and then escape to Free China. For Roosevelt, the raid was a propaganda victory, a potent salve to heal a wounded nation. In Japan, outraged over the deaths of innocent civilians―including children―military leaders launched an ill-fated attempt to seize Midway that would turn the tide of the war. But it was the Chinese who suffered the worst, victims of a retaliatory campaign by the Japanese Army that claimed an estimated 250,000 lives and saw families drowned in wells, entire towns burned, and communities devastated by bacteriological warfare.

At the center of this incredible story is Doolittle, the son of an Alaskan gold prospector, a former boxer, and brilliant engineer who earned his doctorate from MIT. Other fascinating characters populate this gripping narrative, including Chiang Kai-shek, Lieutenant General Joseph “Vinegar Joe” Stilwell, and the feisty Vice Admiral William “Bull” Halsey Jr. Here, too, are indelible portraits of the young pilots, navigators, and bombardiers, many of them little more than teenagers, who raised their hands to volunteer for a mission from which few expected to return. Most of the bombers ran out of fuel and crashed. Captured raiders suffered torture and starvation in Japan’s notorious POW camps. Others faced a harrowing escape across China―via boat, rickshaw, and foot―with the Japanese Army in pursuit.

Based on scores of never-before-published records drawn from archives across four continents as well as new interviews with survivors, Target Tokyo is World War II history of the highest order: a harrowing adventure story that also serves as a pivotal reexamination of one of America’s most daring military operations.

Review
“Vividly narrates the saga of Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle's audacious raid, undoubtedly one of the greatest exploits of World War II…the story has been covered many times before, but never so fully as here.” (Alexander Rose - Wall Street Journal)

“Historian James M. Scott uncovers fresh material to provide an extraordinarily complete account of the 1941 Doolittle US air raid on Tokyo and its aftermath. The basic story is familiar but Scott tells it in so gripping a fashion that it will have great appeal for both World War II buffs and general readers.” (Terry Hartle - Christian Science Monitor)

“[A] breakthrough work of popular history.” (Michael Giltz - Huffington Post)

“A fantastic story, fantastically told.” (The Charleston Mercury)

“Filled with thrilling heroism and sacrifice, Target Tokyo is the definitive account of the amazing Doolittle raid.” (Chris Patsilelis - Tampa Bay Times)

“[A] brilliant tale of adventure and bravery…the telling is fresh and packs a wallop that puts it up with the best of World War II combat stories.” (Edward Cuddihy - Buffalo News)

“One of the most incredible accounts of American military valor I've ever read.” (Pat Conroy)

“A terrific story and a cracking good read.” (Ian Toll, author of Pacific Crucible, War at Sea in the Pacific, 1941-1942)

“The Doolittle raid on Tokyo was one of the most impossible, daring, and consequential missions ever taken by American military men, and James Scott brings it back to the reader with you-are-there immediacy and drama. Filled with great characters, great heroism, and great suffering, Target Tokyo is at once thorough, realistic, and thrilling.” (Evan Thomas, author of Sea of Thunder and Ike's Bluff)

James M. Scott Delivers A Major Payload. Not Since "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" Has the Doolittle Raid Been So Vivid and Alive.
By Jeff Thatcher
My father, S. Sgt. David J. Thatcher, the engineer/gunner on Crew #7, "The Ruptured Duck," is one of the two surviving members of the Doolittle Raid. (Col. Richard E. Cole is the other.) I serve as president of a non-profit group, The Children of the Doolittle Raiders, Inc. and have a vested interest in seeing the Doolittle Raid portrayed accurately and doing everything that I can to keep the legacy of these true American heroes, the Doolittle Raiders, alive.

I am pleased to report that James M. Scott, the author of "Target Tokyo: Jimmy Doolittle and the Raid That Avenged Pearl Harbor" has provided a truly accurate portrayal of the Doolittle Raid and delivered a major payload with his new book, much as the 80 volunteers comprising the Doolittle Raiders delivered their "surprise" to Japan 73 years ago.

Not since "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" has a book on the Doolittle Raid been so vivid and alive in its presentation. I have now read Scott's book three times and each time I learn something new. Scott's research spanning four continents has unearthed a treasure trove of new and previously unpublished material in regard to the Raid and its aftermath. (Thanks to Scott's research, I now have in my possession several documents related to my father's role in the Doolittle Raid and its aftermath -- items I would not otherwise have been privy to.)

Scott's writing style is gripping and takes the reader up close to the Raid -- like a fly on the wall -- from its infancy in the immediate aftermath of Pearl Harbor, to its planning and later the training phase at Eglin Field, to the white knuckle phase when the 16-ship flotilla is steaming toward Japan, to the discovery phase when the Raiders are forced to take off hundreds of miles before they realistically should have -- turning the Raid into an almost certain "suicide" mission, to the bombing phase when the B-25s are over Japan and dropping their medal-strewn payloads on Tokyo and other cities, to the bailout and crash landing phase when the Raiders enter unknown Chinese territory in pitch dark conditions, and to the conclusion when some of the Raiders have been captured by the Japanese and forced to suffer horrible torture and even death in some cases, and some 250,000 Chinese -- for the assistance Chinese guerillas and others gave to the Raiders including my father -- have been forced to pay with their lives at the hands of their brutal Japanese occupiers who exhibit truly subhuman animalistic savagery running the gamut of immolations, rapes, drownings, executions and bacteriological warfare.

Through it all, Scott keeps the reader engaged, eagerly turning page after page, wanting to learn more and unable to put the book down. This is history at its finest. Bravo to James Scott and his excellent book, "Target Tokyo."

Postscript: Since I first posted this review a few months ago, I had the chance to travel to China in early September and "follow" in my father's footsteps after his plane, "The Ruptured Duck," crash landed in the surf off a small island in the South China Sea. I saw the spot where the plane crashed, visited some of the places his crew stayed while escaping pursuing Japanese troops, visited the Enze Clinic where his pilot, Ted Lawson, had his leg amputated and his life saved, and visited Quzhou where my father and many of the Raiders stayed in an air raid shelter/cave before ultimately escaping China.

During my visit to China, I was struck by how much the Chinese still revere the Doolittle Raiders. Despite the massive loss of Chinese lives at the hands of the Japanese in retaliation for the assistance the Chinese provided the Raiders, the Raiders are venerated as heroes in much of China, especially the areas like Zhejiang Province, where they traveled through after parachuting or crash landing their planes and escaping to ultimate safety.

If not for the generosity and bravery of the Chinese, I am firmly convinced that my father and many of the Raiders would have been captured and possibly executed by the Japanese. Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to the Chinese for their help in saving the Raiders. As my father told me when I was visiting with him in late July at his home in Missoula, Montana, about his role in the Doolittle Raid and its aftermath: "The Chinese treated us like royalty. They had nothing, but they gave us everything they had."

like Jeff Thatcher's
By john pound
My father, like Jeff Thatcher's, was also a Doolittle raider. I mention this because, while I deeply regret not having asked him more detailed questions about the raid (he died in 1967) , I treasure my memories of the details he shared. (Like most other men of his generation, he did not open up about his wartime experiences. I think it was a combination of modesty, a natural disinclination to dwell on painful memories and a feeling, often stated, that he simply did his duty). James Scott's book is brilliant. Things I learned from my father are confirmed and, much more importantly, are placed in historical perspective. Information my dad did not have is supplied. For example, Scott dives deeply into Japanese records to explain how sixteen American bombers were able to carry out their mission, and escape Japanese airspace, even though the Japanese knew they were coming. There is a new generation of historians who, through research, blend the human element into factual narrative. While Scott's book is pure history, it reads like a well crafted novel. Anyone who loves history will love this book. Anyone who likes historical novels will love this book, even though it is 100% factual. I came away with a much better appreciation of how isolated events can have unanticipated results of great significance, both good and bad.

Flight To Eternity
By Jack Sparacino
James Scott’s latest book, “Target Tokyo,” vaults him into the upper echelons of naval if not all historians and American storytellers. While many readers have seen assorted, typically brief references to Jimmy Doolittle’s earthshaking raid on Tokyo in April of 1942, “Target Tokyo” brilliantly chronicles the entire sequence of events in a compelling narrative, from the agonies of Pearl Harbor through the post-war trials of Japanese war criminals that alternately gratified and stunned the world with their unheralded and unjustified leniency. Through it all, the heroism of Doolittle and his 79 fellow raiders radiates like a blast furnace.

Scott quickly demonstrates his soaring literary skills in portraying an America that was caught asleep at the switch at Pearl, but one whose government, military and public were ripe for a dramatic counterattack against Japan. As Scott makes clear, FDR, along with bombastic Chief of Naval Operations Ernest King, affable Commanding General of the U.S. Army Air Forces Henry “Hap” Arnold and their senior staff were eager to begin planning for a high profile assault on Japan’s evil war machine headquartered in Tokyo. The goal was to convince Japan, as their own naval chief Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto had warned repeatedly, that in attacking the United States they had picked a fight with precisely the wrong opponent. Once the broad outline of the effort to attack Tokyo directly crystalized, it was clear that the leader of such a starkly dangerous and high profile mission had to be cut from extraordinary cloth. Fortunately for the Allies then and all Americans today, that person stood ready to launch his team into history: brilliant, feisty Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle.

Every ounce of Doolittle’s towering aeronautical and leadership skills, packed into a lean 5’4” frame, was brought to bear on the raid. The young airmen who joined the mission were all volunteers and remained committed to striking back at Japan in the face of mounting evidence that in doing so they were likely signing their own death warrants. As it happened, even after rigorous planning which included intense training and practice in the previously unheard of feat of flying fully loaded B-25 bombers off an aircraft carrier, their ship, the USS Hornet, was spotted by the Japanese hundreds of miles farther from Tokyo than had been planned. This fact alone and the early launch that it precipitated virtually assured that all 16 of the bomber crews would run out of gas and crash land if not get shot down first.

And crash land they did: fifteen in China, the predetermined destination-- though not once on a designated field-- and one in Russia. For anyone still breathing normally after reading about the raid itself, Scott’s description of the fate of the crews after Tokyo manages to be at once wrenching if not stomach turning and uplifting as the men’s valor withstood every blow. It takes a steady handed master researcher and writer to keep the reader glued to every page, every detail, every heart stopping danger, every bomb and every shot. And the author does precisely that.

Throughout the book, Mr. Scott makes it clear that in exchange for the raiders’ heroic success and the bombing damage they dealt, including 87 dead, and the tremendous boost to American morale, the Allies paid a horrific price. While Japan wrung its hands over even the possibility that its homeland could be reached by enemy planes and outright lied when it claimed that the raiders had deliberately targeted civilians, it orchestrated massive public relations efforts which often trumped publicity efforts in the U.S. and abroad. Far worse, Japan took out the worst of its vengeance on China where over 250,000 civilians were slaughtered, often in ways nearly too vile to imagine with Nanking in the eye of this ghastly hurricane. Thus in exchange for a few hundred casualties of their own and a spray of damaged facilities, Japan murdered over a quarter million innocent human beings.

Scott’s penchant for thorough research, which took him around the globe, shows through on every page of Target Tokyo. His liberal use of direct quotes from those directly involved in the raid and those in close observance makes the entire story spring to life in vivid detail. For all intents and purposes, you are right there with Doolittle and his men from pre-mission bravura right through to the suffering and death they endured and the celebrations the survivors basked in. These were our nation’s sons, husbands, nephews, brothers and buddies. Their humanity glows throughout: “Shorty Manch appeared alongside Ted Lawson’s Ruptured Duck with a fruitcake tin in hand. ‘Hey,’ he shouted up to bombardier Bob Clever. ‘Will you-all do a fellow a big favor and carry my phonograph records under your seat? I’ll take my record-player along in my plane and we’ll meet in Chungking and have us some razz-ma-tazz.’ [flight instructor Hank] Miller stopped by as well, extending his hand for a farewell shake. I wish to hell I could go with you.’”

The raiders’ individual personalities are so artfully etched that the reader is staggered all the more at the gruesome execution of three of Doolittle’s airmen by the Japanese: Billy Farrow, Dean Hallmark, and Harold Spatz. Quotes from young Farrow’s pre-war writings are touching to the point of making the reader feel almost as if he or she has lost a close friend. For that matter, it is nearly impossible to not feel a brotherly bond with Doolittle and each of his men. Their collective sacrifices, including those associated with intense and prolonged torture, are beyond measure.

In the end, this reader was left holding his head a little higher, even more proud if that is even possible of our one and only greatest generation. Their story is one for the ages. Target Tokyo will ensure that the remarkable legacy of Jimmy Doolittle’s raiders endures.

A tantalizing read!
By Detra Fitch
During the day Maxine Kiss is covered in black tattoos, even her nails. The only part of her body that is not covered in markings is from the top of her neck to her hairline. Maxine keeps all the markings covered - always. During the day those same tattoos are her armor. Nothing can harm her. She is invincible. At night the tattoos peel from her skin to take on forms of their own. No one would ever have imagined an army of demons living on one woman's skin. When "the boys" peel off of her skin, Maxine is human - vulnerable. But the demons are the best little bodyguards on earth.

Long ago a prison had been built out of air, a prison made of layers and rings and boundaries. The worst demons were sealed in the prison. Yet now, ten thousand years later, the prison is beginning to fail. However, even way back then, someone knew it would eventually happen. That someone created the Wardens, men and women with the speed and power to guard this world against a break in the prison veil. The Wardens were humans constructed to fight those demons that manage to slip through the veil. The Wardens are all dead now. The women in Maxine's family are the last.

Someday, just like her mother before her, Maxine will raise and train her daughter. Then "the boys" will abandon Maxine for her daughter - leaving Maxine helpless against her enemies. This, for Maxine, is normal. It is the way of Earth's last protector. It is life with no love, reveling in death. Enter the one man who just may change everything.

**** This story is nothing short of bizarre. I was well into the story before everything began to make sense. Zee, the only one of Maxine's demons which actually talks, loves to speak in riddles. As things begin to solidify and make some sense to me, the author throws me for a loop by introducing zombies and demons that Maxine tolerates, if not allowing herself to feel some affection towards.

If you are looking for a quick read then this is not the book for you. Author Marjorie M. Liu's story is multi-layered and will grab readers' interests quickly, never to let go. A tantalizing read! ****

A Good But Somewhat Confusing Read
By loonigrrl
****SPOILERS****

I bought The Iron Hunt without realizing that there had been a prequel story in the Wild Thing Anthology. As I was reading it, I was often confused. It almost seemed like I had jumped into the second book of the series, and I kept checking the introductory pages to make sure this was the first one. When I couldn't find anything about another book, I just assumed the author wanted to start the story right in the middle of all the action. Unfortunately, some of this did hurt my enjoyment of the book, but not enough to stop. I'll be picking up the anthology next, and will most likely continue on with the series.

Maxine Kiss was born to become a Hunter, just like her mother, and her mother's mother, and so on. She is Earth's protector against the demons on Earth and the demon army waiting impatiently for the veil to fall. The story begins when a private investigator, whom she doesn't know, is found dead with her name on his body. Maxine begins searching for answers and finds several people along the way, all of whom may be or may become very important to her.

I very much enjoyed the world that Liu had created, particularly the characters and their relationships. All of Maxine's Demons were so . . . well, lovable and cute, even when they weren't supposed to be. Maxine's memories of her mom and grandmother brought me to tears and the other characters and their various and complicated relationships with Maxine kept me wanting to know more. The book also took a few surprising turns- I was amazed by all Maxine had to go through in a single book.

Most of my difficulties with this book stem from not having read the short story. I felt the loss of seeing the beginnings of Maxine's relationship with Grant, and never felt like I really got a feel on Grant beyond him being a pretty decent and powerful guy. Because I wasn't sure if the author was going to do anything with Grant, I didn't know what to think of a couple other men (and in my mind, potential love interests) who came into the picture.

The back cover states that hers is a life lacking in love until one man changes everything. This confused me too because when the story opens, she already has Grant and has a life with love. Therefore, it took me awhile to decide if Grant was the man described in the summary or if it was someone else. Because of this confusion, I kept worrying that Grant was going to get killed off or something similarly drastic.

Another frustrating aspect for me were all the hints, and questions and mystery surrounding Maxine and her real powers, and who she really is. In fact, ALL the other characters ALL seemed to know what's going on about everything, except Maxine. I wasn't sure if some of these questions were hinted at or answered in the short story, and again just felt like I was missing something. I also got fed up at everyone's refusal to answer a direct question. This happened A LOT.

Despite a somewhat frustrating and confusing read, I still managed to get sufficiently caught up in the action, characters and the story that I quickly sped through and finished The Iron Hunt. I would recommend this book, however, I would also suggest reading the short story first.

Thank the Goddess it's not a soppy romance with spells!!!
By conejito asesino
If you are looking for a soppy supernatural romance with a bitchy heroine and a alpha male love interest don't get this book! You, like some of the other reviewers, will be dissapointed.
I've read all of M. Liu's books and have always found her prose beautiful. This one took my breath away. I read it in one sitting. Unlike her other books, which bordered on romance, this one strays much more into the horror arena. The first person viewpoint is intense and startling. It's IS a little confusing, but it's meant to be. The reader must put the pieces together just like the heroine does. And this is no swooning heroine. She's not looking for a prince charming. She's got the world on her shoulders and demons at her back and she knows she'll win simply because she must. The description of the demons and other supernatural characters are guttural and poetic. Think more Dante's Inferno than Anita Blake.
If you're tired of bland prose and want something more etheral, more guttural. If you're tired of flighty heroines whose only determined quest is to sleep around. And if you're tired of heros who are full of the same annoying, macho blandness then you will like this book.
Be aware though... it's more epic poem than bodice ripper.
And that's a really good thing!

Geology Underfoot along Colorado's Front Range (Geology Underfoot), by Lon Abbott, Terri Cook

The transition from the relatively flat Great Plains to the craggy peaks of Colorado s Front Range is one of North America s most abrupt topographical contrasts. The epic, 1,800-million-year geologic story behind this amazing landscape is even more awe inspiring. In Geology Underfoot along Colorado s Front Range, the most recent addition to the Geology Underfoot series, authors (and geoscientists) Lon Abbott and Terri Cook narrate the Front Range s tale, from its humble beginnings as a flat, nondescript seafloor through several ghostly incarnations as a towering mountain range. The book s 21 chapters, or vignettes, lead you to easily accessible stops along the Front Range s highways and byways, where you ll meet the apatosaur and other dinosaurs who roamed the floodplains and beaches that once covered the Front Range; look for diamonds in rare, out-of-the-way volcanic pipes; learn how America s mountain, Pikes Peak, developed from molten magma miles below the surface only to become an important visual landmark for early Great Plains travelers; and walk the Gangplank, a singularly important plateau for both nineteenth-century westward expansion and our understanding of the Front Range s most recent exhumation. A healthy dose of full-color illustrations and photos demystify the concepts put forth in the authors elegant, insightful prose. With Geology Underfoot along Colorado s Front Range in hand, you ll feel like you re traveling through time as you explore the Front Range s hidden geologic treasures.

Review
This title gives useful, detailed descriptions of the geology of the Front Range, including many popular tourist locations. Most of the features it describes are visible from highways, while some are best seen while on foot in parks and recreation localities.

Read it from cover-to-cover and then stick it in the glovebox.
By Amazon Customer
Once again, a good book has reminded me that I don't know everything about everything. Abbott and Cook have a style that will satisfy the curiosity of the layman while simultaneously filling in the knowledge gaps of the expert. That's not easy. It makes me think of the script writers for the blockbuster kids movies (e.g. Rango): they're writing for the kids while simultaneously sticking in entertaining quips for the adults (please - I don't mean that as a condescending slur towards non-geologists - it's just a good example of two-level writing). Anyway, their analogies are well worth stealing. For example, they describe cutting French bread as an analog for the downcutting within the Rocky Flats pediment (hard sawing through the gravels and then soft Pierre shale below). Brilliant! In other words, it's a book that's both accessible but it has a depth which undoubtedly describes the authors themselves. It's a book for anyone with a casual interest in the Front Range as well as the know-it-all geologist who needs a dose of humility. Bravo!

The Awesome Front Range -learn to love it!
By Keith Hackleman
I have enjoyed acquiring knowledge from the entire series of Geology Underfoot and this latest addition to the series is no exception. I only wish I could have read this book before making numerous visits to this area. The book's chapters are vignettes of the geologic story of this amazing landscape known as the Front Range. These stories bring the scenery to life and give a deeper meaning to the beauty and diversity of the terrain as it was transformed from an ancient seafloor to majestic towering mountains over millions of years of geologic time. The vignettes allow you to relate to the geologic features of each area that you can explore along the Front Range. Some of these sites include Cripple Creek, Dinosaur Ridge, Garden of the Gods, Rocky Mountain National Park, Royal Gorge, and many other lesser known areas. This book is well illustrated with maps, diagrams, and photographs. I certainly recommend it hfor anyone wanting to acquire more "behind the ecenes" knowledge of the Front Range of Colorado.

Excellent science writing
By Bob M.
Geology Underfoot along Colorado's Front Range skillfully fed my fascination with casual geology, the wonder and curiosity I feel about how the land ended up looking the way we humans have found it. It combines compelling accounts of what appears to be the state of the art understanding of deep geological processes, with seductive exploration guides to specific sites. The writing is lively, clear, and evocative. I have only three minor criticisms: the vignette style means that some points are made more than once, I could have used a concluding summary that tied together various themes explored in the vignettes, and I wish they would have given some idea of the cost of some of the suggested outings. My biggest regret however is that this book is about Colorado and not New Jersey where I live. I have to wait until this summer to explore the sites described, otherwise I would already have been out the door to several of them.

Pretty good introduction to SAN technology and design principles
By branfarm
I thought this book was a good introduction into the basic technologies, design principles, and design considerations that go into building a high-performance SAN. I enjoyed the author's use of real life customer examples and also practical principles that almost seem obvious (after he states them of course).

My only complaint is the pejorative view of iSCSI technology -- he basically says you would have to be dumb as a post to use iSCSI, and therefore, doesn't give very much good information on it. Since I was looking for a relatively unbiased look at SAN's, this lowered my rating overall.

That aside though, this is a great starting point to understanding the in's and outs of SAN design and operation. I would recommend it to anyone.

Enjoyed the book
By Harrison Murchison
I think this book has done a great job of informing me about the task of SAN Design and contains bountiful information about Fibre Channel's prowess in SAN design. I will echo the sentiments of the other poster. iSCSI is never spoken about in a really positive light. I think this is perhaps a bit short sighted as there are differing performance needs for SAN design and a Designer would have to be silly not to look at every avenue.

I think Judd has written the book in a very informative manner and I enjoyed reading the footnotes about what "other" vendors have done or haven't done. I can always verify this on my own but I might not even think to look at certain aspects of a particular product. This book brings those extra topics into the discussion.

This "is" a Brocade book so we're talking about Brocade solutions here and I'm sure you'd read a slightly different version from Qlogic or McData but all in all it was pretty fair. Fair enough that I'm considering grabbing the book on Multiprotocol Routing. Regards

Good Brocade Content, Ignore the FUD
By Browncoat001
Overall, it isn't a bad book. The Brocade and fibre channel content is well done. The problem is this book just stinks of anti-iSCSI and Cisco product FUD. As long as you are aware of this going in, you will be fine. Make sure this isn't your only source of knowledge.
