It's dark and stormy, but lots of fun

Some of the best crime happens in New England. Fictional crime, anyway. “Stone Cold” is a collection of whodunit stories wrought by New England writers with dark and stormy imaginations to match the dark and stormy nights New Englanders are so well acquainted with.
The editors at Level Best Books, based out of Somerville, Mass., have produced the 11th annual anthology of short crime fiction. “Stone Cold” is a treat, an inviting mixed sampler with stories set in the past, in odd places like a nursing home and a gynecologist’s office, on Cape Cod and in Salem, Mass., during a street theater performance featuring a witch, and involving a paternoster (read on). There’s a ‘bread baby’ and a pyromaniac, an overly ambitious fundraising campaign for a failing public TV station and a pre-pubescent son who washes his mother’s hair. Note: It’s their secret.
Hilarious, raucous, sometimes somber and suspenseful, and sometimes really creepy, this collection of fiction by some of our best regional crime and mystery writers hits the spot each fall, just as the leaves and temperature drop. You’ll find yourself yearning for a cup of hot cider, perhaps spiked, and a comfy armchair as you settle into this collection.
Barbara Ross, one of the book’s editors, sets a high mark with her “Bread Baby” story about a package that shows up in the Juno! mailroom. “Juno!” is a TV talk show and magazine, a lot like Oprah but based in NYC. Inside the package is a baby made out of bread. It’s a startlingly perfect rendering, as if sculpted. The executive assistant makes it her business to figure out what the bread baby is all about.
The first story in the collection, the winner of the annual Al Blanchard Annual Crime Fiction Award, is a lot of fun. “Myrna!” by John Bubar is a story about a murder you want to cheer for. The protagonist, Aaron, is a self-deprecating man with a bit of a Woody Allen complex. He thinks funny thoughts without meaning to be funny, but he’s got the smarts and the drive to retaliate after his wife, Myrna, emasculates him one too many times.
A paternoster is bit like an elevator without doors, except that there are several linked cars that ascend and descend. Salem author Margaret Press’s protagonist, Rhode, thinks she sees a body in one of the cars in the soon-to-be demolished old building in The Point section of Salem. Rhode admits to being a psychopath and she’s had a couple of Percocet but she’s pretty sure she’s right about the body. It disappears and the police walk away, unconcerned. “Paternoster” is a lively story with a perfectly nasty setting and a few sketchy characters. As Rhodes says, “…in our family we find people sometimes need killing.”
In “A Dangerous Life,” by Adam Purple, the likable detective is outsmarted in a smuggling scheme set on Cape Cod during Prohibition. A dollop of shampoo in the palm of a sixth-grader is a clever and torturous device employed by Jennifer Dupree in “Kitchen Sink Shampoo.” The boy’s mother wants her weekly shampoo and we want to high tail it out of that creepy kitchen scene. Not really. The writing here is quite good, with sentences like this one describing the mother: “She laughs like she did when he and his father left — high and thin and like something inside her is breaking — and Daniel thinks maybe she knows she’s said too much, maybe she isn’t so far gone that she doesn’t know.”
Several stories in the collection are linked to forthcoming mystery series. Edith Maxwell’s “Breaking the Silence” is set in 1888 in Amesbury during the time of a great fire that wiped out some important factories and stores, and killed several people. Faith, 17, works 10-hour-days in one of the textile mills and helps her father run the household now that her mother is dead. She has a steady beau, Zeb, and a strong tie to the Quaker faith. She sees something suspicious the night of the fire, which spurs her to investigate further. John Greenleaf Whittier, also a Quaker, makes a few appearances in “Breaking the Silence.” Maxwell writes that she’s plotting the Whittier historic mystery series.
Humor, mischief and suspense are among the notable constants in this nicely edited collection of stories that prove that Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King don’t have the New England franchise on things that go bump in the night.

Stories With a Twist

A really good collection of stories based obviously in New England, and they certainly reflect the landscape. What I really liked about his group was the variety of places and feeling and how each writer produced a gleeful twist. I will be checking on the others in this series because te writers are just that good.
