Fascinating portrait of deception

You're a liar. And you're lied to every day. Think you're not? Count the number of times someone answers "Fine" to your "How are you?" when they're obviously bothered by something. Even your "How are you?" is a lie, because how often do you really want to hear about an acquaintance's personal problems? And how many times have you said, "What a beautiful baby" when you really believe the child looks just like its ugly parents?

Why do we lie so much? Why are lies like, "That dress looks great on you" and "The dinner was delicious" considered vital for social interaction when, if we knew the person was lying to us, we would likely be disturbed -- and yet, according to the research of author Richard Feldman, just as likely to increase the number of our lies to that person?

In The Liar in Your Life: The Way to Truthful Relationships (which is being marketed as self-help when it's really a wonderful psychological portrait of deception), Feldman shows that even trained lie detectors like police officers are statistically only as good as the average person at detecting a lie: accurate less than half the time (this is worse than random guessing). He also describes the liar's advantage and the truth bias, and offers tips on encouraging truth and how to find the balance between "radical honesty" and blatant deception.

Feldman shows how the legend about George Washington and the cherry tree is a made-up story that we ironically use to keep children honest. And there is a politeness / honesty paradox. We teach children to always be honest, but then we want them to be polite, a practice that often involves outright lying if not merely the omission of the truth.

Surprisingly, Feldman's take on lying is not entirely negative. He goes on in The Liar in Your Life about how, in our society, knowing how (and more importantly, when) to lie is a sign of proper social development. There is even evidence that deception is a survival instinct. Natural selection favors deceitful practices like camouflage and "playing dead," and even infants as young as 6 months will use false crying to get attention. Is it possible we're born to lie?

Dr. Feldman may be mildly long-winded, but he has so much interesting information to impart that it's rarely a problem. Instead, his conversational narrative style makes the bulk of The Liar in Your Life go down easily. Remarkably, audiobook reader Bob Walter adopts this style as his own so completely that it seems as if the author is reading it himself.

From self-deception to cognitive dissonance, from blind dates to job interviews, from résumé padding to online avatars, from Lou Pearlman to Bernie Madoff, lying is a part of our everyday life, even a part of being human. So maybe it's less important to be honest all the time than it is to be aware of the deception that surrounds us. That sounds like a more reasonable expectation, at least until something better comes along.

Very misleading

The title of this book is very misleading. It does give insight as to why people lie, however it does not give any insight as to how to build honest relationships. I would not recommend this book to anyone that is looking for guidance on how to overcome a liar in a relationship.

Lies are much more common than we realize, and deception is an unfortunate part of everyday life, according to Robert Feldman. From mistruths by Presidents Nixon and Clinton, to false diplomas by the dean of admissions of M.I.T., to the lies from our local used car dealer. Feldman believes that the issue is not whether people lie to us, but how much and why, along with why we often believe them. Both solutions are bad, states Zizek. They merely prolong the problem, rather than tackling it.

The refugee crisis also presents an opportunity, a unique chance for Europe to redefine itself: but, if we are to do so, we have to start raising unpleasant and difficult questions. We must also acknowledge that large migrations are our future: only then can we commit to a carefully prepared process of change, one founded not on a community that see the excluded as a threat, but one that takes as its basis the shared substance of our social being.

The only way, in other words, to get to the heart of one of the greatest issues confronting Europe today is to insist on the global solidarity of the exploited and oppressed. Maybe such solidarity is a utopia. But, warns Zizek, if we don't engage in it, then we are really lost. And we will deserve to be lost.

The authors are also prepared to recognise and outline that in many instances ‘expert’ views differ at many stages in the treatment of the pulp. The list of topics covered in this excellent book is comprehensive. I cannot think of any significant omissions. The balance of the book seems to be entirely appropriate. I found the style excellent and there were copious, clear illustrations and the general appearance and quality is very good.

This book is relevant for undergraduate and postgraduate curricula in UK dental schools. The subject of endodontics (or endodontology) has significantly expanded in recent years and so the scope of endodontics that a dental student should grasp has expanded. This book serves, therefore, as an excellent text to compliment curricula. It would also be of use to general dental practitioners and specialists.

About the Author
Kishor Gulabivala is Head of Endodontology and Department of Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London. He is also an Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital, University College London and Hospital Trusts.

Kishor graduated from Birmingham Dental School in 1980. After 3 years in general practice, he completed the MSc in Conservative Dentistry in 1984 and consolidated training in Conservative Dentistry as a registrar from 1984 to 1986. He was appointed Lecturer in Conservative Dentistry in 1987, when he also enrolled onto higher training in Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital (1987-1994) at the end of which he was appointed Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. He established and ran the MSc in Endodontics (1989), the MClinDent and specialist training programmes in Endodontics (1999) and the Diploma in Endodontic Practice (2011). He also established and ran the clinical endodontic service at the Eastman Dental Hospital from 1994 to 2004.

Kishor was entered on the UK Specialist Lists in Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics and Endodontics when they were established in 1999/2000 and completed his PhD on microbial infections of teeth in 2004. He was Training Programme Director for Restorative Dentistry at the London Deanery between 2006 and 2011; and is now the Training Programme Director for Endodontics in London (2012-2015). Kishor’s research interest is centred in Endodontology and has published widely both on basic and clinical research questions with over 100 peer-reviewed papers and over 100 research abstracts. He also serves as Associate Editor of the International Endodontic Journal.

Dr. Ng graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1985 and spent 9 years practicing general dentistry in the Government Dental Service in Hong Kong. She was granted the Hong Kong Government Scholarship to undertake the Master of Science programme in Endodontics at the Eastman Dental Institute in 1994-5 which she passed with distinction. Upon completion of the programme and return to Hong Kong, she was promoted to Senior Dental Officer. During the two years of this office, she developed a referral endodontic service for the Government Dental Services. She was also appointed Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong and contributed to their postgraduate programmes. In 1997, she returned to the Eastman Dental Institute as a full-time Clinical Lecturer in Endodontology. She was promoted to Senior Clinical Lecturer in Endodontology in 2010. Dr. Ng served as a Senior Programme Coordinator for 10 years and became the Programme Director for the MSc in Endodontics and MClinDent in Endodontology programmes in 2007. She is currently also the Educational Supervisor for the Specialist trainees in Endodontology. Dr Ng has lectured widely to local and international professional groups.

Dr. Ng is a UK General Dental Council registered specialist in Endodontics and a certified member of the European Society of Endodontology. Dr. Ng’s other professional commitments include her membership of the scientific committee of the British Endodontic Society and the European Society of Endodontology; and Associate editorship of the International Endodontic Journal. Dr Ng’s research interests are focused on the effectiveness and long-term outcomes of endodontic treatment. For her completed PhD program she researched the clinical outcome of endodontic treatment. She has published widely in international peer-reviewed journals with over 40 peer-reviewed articles and 80 research abstracts.

negates the Aryan Superman nonsense

Obscenely biased but good info on Nazi race theory. It negates the Aryan Superman nonsense. The Nazis were far too rational and scientific for such childish notions. This book proves it. I recommend this with Christopher Hutton's "Race and the Third Reich" and V. K. Clark's "Black Nazis II" or Black Nazis III.

A brief but powerful text

Mosse's work on the genesis of european anti semitism is both readable and powerful. Through his exploration of nationalism and catholic history he develops a cogent theory of how the christian attitudes towards Jews were formed. While most study on this topic begins in the 19th century, Mosse is able to link it to a far deeper history and in so doing, greatly improve our understanding of this phenomonon.
Any one who wants to understand the Holocaust's progenitors would do well to start with this important text.

I'm actually still a Dane but haven't lived in Denmark for se entry years now, so this gives me an update on current mores that Id otherwise not get, and it's fascinating! I have known for a long time that I can never "go back to Denmark." What I knew as Denmark has altered almost beyond recognition. I think it's a change for the better: it's a more egalitarian society and very few people are forced into drudgery to stay alive. After 45 years in the United States I'd find it very difficult to live there now, excellent as it is in many ways. Having no Danish background at all, Helen Russell observes the Denmark of today with eyes uncontaminated by distant memories, but prejudiced in favor of the Danes being the happiest people on earth. This makes the book pleasant, interesting and funny to read, as well as quite informative. I really enjoyed it!

And this is A Good Thing. ” I wanted a light and fun

“I am not important. If I take a break, no one dies. And this is A Good Thing.”

I wanted a light and fun, but deeply interesting read to bring on a summer trip, and this book turned out to be the perfect choice. It offered a pretty entertaining look at Danish culture and society, all through the lens of why they continually rank among the highest countries in terms of happiness.

I’m not too hard to please with a good book that takes on the premise of “I’ll try this out for a year and then write about it,” and this book fits that description to a tee. The writing is light and engaging enough to make it easy to fly right through its pages, yet contains enough statistics and odd facts to keep you intrigued. Did you know that Danish women can get an ovulation discount for booking their travel around a ripe time for them to procreate? I do now.

After a while you get the formula of each chapter: an anecdote, a few statistics, an interview with a randomly found “expert,” and the constant questioning of various Danes about how happy they are on a scale of 1 to 10. That said, the book manages to be pretty interesting in spite of its persistence upon this formula, so I suppose that’s a big win.

As far as Denmark goes? I could probably do without the tax rate (although, that comes with some major benefits), cultural homogeny, and the never-ending darkness come November, but there’s a lot about the Danish Way that I do appreciate. The lack of self-importance reflected in that earlier quote… I think that’s refreshing. And I love the way they’re able to enjoy their work. Not to mention the practice of hygge and getting all cozy as a sport.

Living Danishly sounds good to me!

I rarely rate books as I usually am in bed when I finish them (being the place I do my best reading), and it is just too much trouble to think of something to say when sleep is calling. However, I enjoyed this book so much that I want to share it with others. Helen Russell builds on the World Happiness research that says Denmark is the tops. She combines her own experiences with scientific research that explores different aspects of Denmark life. Sounds dry but it is anything but. She is a very good writer and often quite funny. I love how she calls her husband "Lego Man" and without giving away any spoilers her encounter with little Red is enchanting. Having grown up in the USA it is ingrained in me that we are lucky to be born here in America. However, after reading this book a little part of me wishes I lived where they get hygge and the basic worries of life are covered allowing the citizens to operate on a higher plane of existence. I would trade all our "things" for a short work week and a culture of trust.

Just sat down this morning and read this book from cover to cover. Leon's voice is easy to listen to because he is not ultimately didactic or highly diagnostic on which 'season' you are in, nor is he supercilious or preachy. He trusts the Lord to enlighten his reader as he simply uses scripture to highlight each season. His voice is humble and testimonial in nature which makes it easy to consider his points and encouragements. I appreciate that he uses scripture most heavily to support his points, which I think shows his main source of encouragement was meditation on scripture instead of heavy citation of secondary--though perhaps theologically solid--Christian book authors. Lastly, as someone who has experienced a season of loss that can be defined as suffering perhaps, it was evident that Leon is no stranger to suffering. Not simply because he shares details, but because the spirit in which he writes validates that experience. Well worth reading - I recommend this book.
