Peter J. Kastor is assistant professor of history and American culture studies and assistant director of American culture studies at Washington University in St. Louis. • The lack of customer-control over the investment process
• The not sufficient profit sharing of returns above the investment guarantee – and the opaqueness of this profit sharing mechanism

Over time it has become apparent that there is an additional disadvantage from a company perspective, which is the substantial required risk capital these products generate due to the guarantees they provide.

All these problems can be addressed with so-called unit linked products – at the expense of not providing investment guarantees any more.
Unit-linked products invest the savings part of the premiums of the policyholder transparently in investment vehicles, mostly internal or external funds and let the policyholder participate fully in the investment returns of these funds – the upside as well as the downside.

While these products clearly address the issues mentioned above they typically do not provide any investment guarantees any more.

The obvious step now is to build investment guarantees into unit-linked products – this is what Variable Annuities provide.

Variable Annuities combine the advantages of traditional life insurance products – long term investment guarantees, with the advantages of unit-linked products – transparency of the investment and full upside participation.

This of course comes with a price:

• The policyholder has to pay a premium for the additional investment guarantee
• The shareholder has to manage the substantial risks generated by such products

Nevertheless these products have had a tremendous success in the US and in the past few years we have seen these products being offered in the European markets. These products are new to Europe, except in some locations, where they have been widespread, e.g., Switzerland, and have generated a lot of interest as they can address the weaknesses of the traditional life products.

Isobel Doole is Professor of International Marketing at Sheffield Hallam Univarsity and a Senior Examiner on the Post Graduate Professional Diploma of The Chartered Institute of Marketing. She is Head of the Research Centre for Individual and Organisational Development at the university and has considerable experience at a senior level working across a number of industries with international and UK companies in the field of international marketing and strategic marketing decision making.

Robin Lowe is a Principal Lecturer in International Marketing at Sheffield Hallam University, a Visiting Faculty Member of the University of Porto, Portugal and is an examiner on the Post Graduate Professional Diploma of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He has considerable business and education experience holding senior positions in industry and in the university. Students in search of a face-to-face teacher

Tara Brabazon's book "University of Google" (2007) provides a complete discussion of the issues surrounding the push in higher education towards online delivery of course content. Brabazon discusses how university administrators have been economically pressured to increase revenues and reduce the cost of faculty through the use of online courses. She provides numerous literature references arguing that the primary mission of universities, namely a student's education, has and will continue to suffer using this approach. While there is a significant discussion of the advantages of online tools, such as Google, there is also a thoughtful argument presented that states, "Google is facilitating laziness, poor scholarship, and compliant thinking." Brabazon attempts to provide some remedies to this push toward online education, but I wish that she would have explored this more with additional concrete examples of alternatives to the use of the online approach. Most of the examples she does provide come from the Arts and Humanities but can be applied more broadly across the spectrum of disciplines in higher education. Her argument that students miss out on the non-textual cues (i.e. other student responses, smells, tastes, etc.) by viewing an online lecture rather than a face-to-face lecture is compelling. I came away from reading this book inspired to focus on improving my own lecture skills and enhancing interactions with students in the classroom. I agree with Brabazon's assessment that "students are not consumers", and education is most effective when rigorous, challenging, and at times painful. Only when students are challenged to the brink are they truly transformed into well educated, literate, critical human beings.

Since the publication of the first edition, BIOSTATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY has continued to garner loyal readers from across speciality areas in the biomedical community. BIOSTATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY provides clear, concise explanations of the underlying principles of statistics and epidemiology, as well as practical guidelines of "how to do it" and "how to interpret it."

Through its several editions, BIOSTATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY has continued to adapt to evolving areas of research in epidemiology and statistics, while maintaining the original objective of being non-threatening, understandable and accessible to those with limited or no background in mathematics. Two new areas are covered in the third edition: genetic epidemiology and research ethics.

With the sequencing of the human genome, there has been a flowering of research into the genetic basis of health and disease, and especially the interactions between genes and environmental exposures. The medical literature in genetic epidemiology is vastly expanding and some knowledge of the epidemiological designs and an acquaintance with the statistical methods used in such research is necessary in order to be able to appreciate new findings. Thus this edition includes a new chapter on genetic epidemiology as well as an Appendix describing the basics necessary for an understanding of genetic research. Such material is not usually found in first level epidemiology or statistics books, but it is presented here in a basic, and hopefully easily comprehensible way, for those unfamiliar with the field. The second new chapter is on research ethics, also not usually covered in basic textbooks, but critically important in all human research . New material has also been added to several existing chapters.

I hope this book will be useful to diverse groups of people in the health field, as well as to those in related areas. The material is intended for (1) physicians doing clinical research as well as for those doing basic research; (2) for students-medical, college, and graduate; (3) for research staff in various capacities; and (4) for anyone interested in the logic and methodology of biostatistics and epidemiology. Good as far as it goes

Although billed as a 'primer for health & biomedical professionals', this book is actually too basic for that. Most in the field are not undergrads, and so need the more advanced statistical measuring methods explained more thoroughly (or, in some cases, at all). There is nothing about infective disease, so those measures are also lacking.

This book feels very disorganized, with little help from the index and contents. There are much better books of this type on the market - for example, Primer of Biostatistics by Stanton A. Glantz or even Epidemiology by Leon Gordis. I'd keep looking.

A Primer, Not A Complete Treatment

I looked at several introductions on biostats before settling on this text. It is a truly excellent complement to more in-depth treatments you would get in an intensive biostats course, yet remains strong, well-organized and able to stand on its own by straddling that fine line between between being over-simplistic and over-technical. I think the previous review may have unfairly underestimated the book's usefulness by not treating it as what it was meant to be: a primer.
