Dr Fatma Selcen Kilinc has a PhD in Textile Engineering and works as a senior researcher at the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA in the area of personal protective clothing and equipment. She has published extensively in such areas of fiber/polymer science as high performance materials, protective clothing, fabric comfort and modelling, characterization of fibers and fabrics, and antibacterial applications. She holds a patent in polymer implants for timed release of drugs. She is a member of ASTM International, AATCC, TAPPI, and AAMI technical committees and an area editor of the Journal of Engineered Fibers and Fabrics.

This study draws on theory in symbolic anthropology, sociolinguistics, and the dramaturgical model of human communication developed by Erving Goffman. Although the assumptions and premises that shape these areas of inquiry are held by some to be quite disparate, this analysis shows them to be fully compatible and mutually complementary.

humor and power

Unless you have a special interest in linguistics or Goffman's dramaturgic model of human communication, you may feel the idea of this book too specialized to engage your interest. If you aren't interested in anthropology, you probably won't be reading this review anyway. My suggestion to readers is---start from Chapter Two, read the rest, enjoy the author's cartoons, and don't forget the Appendix either. Then go back and read Chapter One. The book will make a lot more sense and you will know what the author is talking about.

The Apaches find the behavior of Anglo-Americans bizarre and often insulting. The "portraits" referred to in the title concern little dramatic skits put on spontaneously by one person to a) pull someone's leg and b) express commonly-held feelings about whites. Such skits or "portraits" can create animosity if the butt of the skit is not close to the performer. If close, then the proximity is expressed through the butt's toleration of the fun being poked at him (i.e. "he can say what he wants, but we're still friends"). Though Basso strangely does not touch on the subject, perhaps out of consideration for his hosts and friends among the Apaches, there is definitely a colonial relationship here. The oppressor/colonizer can speak or behave as he likes while the oppressed/colonized are powerless. Unable to push back when pushed, the Apaches (those who are in the subordinate position) resort, like many colonized peoples, to humor and mockery to even the score. Subaltern studies anyone ?

This is all well and good, but to me the value of this book lies elsewhere. I would say it provides an extremely accurate description of cultural contrasts. Due to the presentation of the "portraits" and to Basso's writing, you get a clear explanation of Apache ways or values in personal behavior and how they see whites due to that. A question arises as to whether the Apaches need to be culturally sensitive too, or only the whites, due to past history. No matter, the Apaches at least have to be aware of the differences while the whites can ignore them. The book can be used in a first year Anthropology course or for any course or lecture on cultural relativity, developing cultural sensitivity, how to study cultural contrasts, culture clash, etc. An excellent book for such a purpose.

My Favorite Echocardiology Textbook.

Of all my Echocardiology textbooks, this one is my favorite. Over the years, I have collected MANY Echocardiology textbooks (numerous Otto, Feigenbaum, Solomon, Braunwald, Oh, Reynolds, etc); I could open my own library. This textbook is truly comprehensive!

It's as if ASE, has compiled every article written on every echo subject and compiled it into a textbook format. Unlike the ASE journal articles, a lot of the superfluous language has been omitted. The text is direct and includes many pictures and diagrams as reference. Subjects are easily referenced. Some subjects that are not usually covered, like pregnancy, endocrine disease, SLE, athlete's, HIV, etc., are covered in detail with values and best practice information. Of course, the typical subjects are also included (Diastolic dysfunction, valvular disease, etc). Best of all, my lab considers the ASE values the gold standard, so I can directly reference values in the textbook during a discussion.

I could sell all the other textbooks and be perfectly happy keeping this book and Reynold's pocket reference.

Outstanding review on echocardiography in a modular fashion. Very concise and well delineated. Not as extensive on some subjects as other echo texts but this serves as a quick reference guide on many different topics, and has a stronger emphasis on the ASE guidelines since it is endorsed by them. I would recommend this as either a primary or secondary text for fellows or faculty.

Robert Frost examines the reasons for Poland's fall and the conduct of the war by the Polish government, and addresses the crucial question of why, despite widespread recognition of the shortcomings of the political system, subsequent attempts at reform failed. War has long been seen as crucial to the development of more effective systems of government in Europe during the seventeenth century, but studies usually concentrate on states which responded successfully to the challenges. Much can be learned from those that failed, and the paucity of English-language material on this important conflict means that After the Deluge will appeal to a broad audience among historians of Poland, Germany, Scandinavia, Russia, and early modern Europe in general.

About the Author
John Elliott has had an industrial and academic career and for the past twelve years has been chairman of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodrion. He was Director of the Institute for Employment Studies based at the University of Sussex and until recently was a Professor of Business Studies.

Olwen H. Hufton is a professor of European History and Women's Studies at Harvard University.

Professor H. G. Koenigsberger FBA is one of Britain's senior historians. German by birth, he has taught at Manchester, Nottingham, Cornell and London, and is now Professor of History Emeritus and Fellow, King's College London. Koenigsberger is also a Past President of the International Commission for the History of Representative and Parliamentary Institutions, and in 1987 Cambridge published a festschrift in his honour under the title Politics and Culture in Early Modern Europe, ed. Mack and Jacob. In the late 1960s Koenigsberger was a founder-editor (with Professor Sir John Elliott) of the 'Cambridge Studies in Early Modern History' series, where his book is now being published.

Hamish Scott is Professor of International History, University of St Andrews. He is the author of The Rise of the Great Powers, 1648 1815 (1983, with D. McKay) and British Foreign Policy in the Age of the American Revolution (1990).

A book about XVII century diplomacy in Central Europe

I bought the book thinking it dealt with warfare in the XVII century but it is not. The main topic is how The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth tried to survive by looking for the right alliance with others powers. These outer diplomatic strategies were obstaculized by the inner political problems.

Its interesting and it has showed me the political situation in the Commonwealth, but do not look for warfare. It is not a warfare book.
