Excellent Read!

Tony Bacon's books are known to be extremely informative and interesting to read, and this new Squier (spelled S.Q.U.I.E.R) book is no exception. He has covered Squier from the begining in 1982 to the present, with some fantastic photo's included.

This is not a specialist / collectors book, so if you are a hardened fan of a particular model or era, then don't expect pages of detailed collectors info on your chosen subject, as this is not the point of this book. The information is well researched and (in my opinion) appears to be extremely accurate, as I would expect from such a respected author.
I had thought a book on the Squier brand would be almost impossible to write because of all the different models and countries of manufacture over the past 30 years, but Tony has pulled it off!...well done!

I can highly recommend this book to anyone interested in how the Squier name has evolved over the years, but this is not a JV, SQ or even 'E series enthusiasts bible, though there is a fair bit of general info on the JV models, including some cool photographs.

A facinating read with some real eye openers!

Excellent history of Squier (by Fender) electric guitars

Excellent history of Squier (by Fender) electric guitars. This gives the reader a sense of the ups and downs of the sub-brand. The author conducted many interviews will people involved with Squier, from the people who ran Fender in the early 1980s, to the Japanese contract manufacturers, to the Squier bosses in charge in then 2000s. Tony Bacon describes all the Squier models, even some of the short-lived ones that were experiments of Squier's frequently changing leadership. Bacon doesn't claim the book to be a resource for identifying when and where a particular guitar was made, but the appendices are the main source of this info for Squier owners. The only thing that put me off was the format - two facing pages of text followed by two pages of photos throughout the book. So when I was reading something particularly interesting, I had to turn the page twice to keep going. The publisher probably wanted to appeal to those who like "guitar porn."

Really enjoyed this!

The Fender story is already quite we'll documented. Tony Bacon's Squier Electrics fills in the gaps for us Fender fans who keep a Squier on the guitar stand in the living room while our Fender is in its case under the bed. We're on the wrong side of 50 and after taking a few decades off from playing we're amazed at the quality and affordability of the Squier range. He even has the sunburst Squier 51 on the cover of the book: the model the got me back into playing after a 25 year hiatus. The book gives a good back-story how the Squier came to be and how the Squier 51 brought the brand into cult status. His book predates the Minecraft craze but a future edition might show the parallel between the popularity of the Squier 51 and Minecraft and the ability for users to customize them. There really is a seed of a new way of doing business that Squier seems to have embraced, or created, and Tony's book gives us insight into the origins of that seed.

Terrible, but often required by classes

This is a terrible book required by two of my classes. Many of the images look like they have been poorly copied 14 times (at least) and are very hard to read. On numerous occasions the instructor had to give out dimensions for homework assignments because no one could figure out what the text in the book was saying, and some assignments were handed out copies from an earlier edition...the same drawings, just less crap because they had been copied fewer times. There are also more than a few incorrect pieces of information scattered through the book...not too bad for a first or second edition but really pathetic for a 14th edition. I realize the reason for making new editions is to force people to buy new books and stop using the old ones...but they could at least fix the errors that people email them about. The book is also extremely outdated; a huge portion of it is dedicated to drafting by hand...not to understanding old drawings, but to actually making them. I am actually a bit angry with my school for using this book...given how outdated it is an how much worse than the just-as-outdated previous editions it is, it would make a lot more sense to require the 10th edition or something.

Note: if you have a class that requires this book, check to see if you will need it again in future classes before deciding to rent it.

I love all of Catherine Cookson's books

I love all of Catherine Cookson's books, and read many of them years ago. After reading Fifteen Streets, I'm going to continue and read all of those that I haven't. Great book.

There is some fine writing and story telling in this one.

Catherine Cookson is the author of about 100 novels and has become one of the best selling author of this historical romance or historic novel genre. (Cookson actually hated it when her works were referred to as "Romance Novels" and insisted that they were "Historical Novels," a feeling in which I agree with the author). This particular work, The Fifteen Streets was first published in 1952 and is one of her first novel (If I am not mistaken it is her second or third). It was made into a very successful T.V. movie in later years and actually was nominated for an Emmy despite mixed reviews. Mixed or not, the public loved it and loved the novel that the movie was based upon.

This novel takes place in England during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Like Dickens, Cookson boldly examined the plight of the English poor, class distinctions and religious differences and that indeed is what this work is all about. A lower class dock worker falls in love with a girl of a higher class (rich) and of a different religion (Protestant) where as he and his family and his neighborhood are Catholic.

Few authors are able to capture the hopeless poverty, ridged distinctions between classes and religious bigotry and hatred that prevailed in urban England during the time this story took place. I will not tell you that this is one of those happy ever after books - a feel good book - no far from it. It is a work filled with a cutting realism that made me, the reader, set up and take notice.

A love story here? Yes, most certainly but one laced with an almost hopelessness, much as the lives of millions led and still led - truth be told. This work is also a good lesson as to one often times is better off not getting what they wish for.

Note that I am giving this one five stars. This is not Cookson's best work by far but for an almost first novel it is difficult to find much better in this particular genre. I am not a constant reader of this author but my wife is and has read the vast majority of her novels. Ever so often she talks me into reading one of the m which was the case here. I am glad I listened to her.

The only objection I have to this book is this particular publications book cover. The thing looks like a toned down bodice buster...that is NOT what this book is.

strong historical relationship drama

THE FIFTEEN STREETS are slums filled with abject poverty that usually leads to its residents giving up on the future as the hard work destroys the dreams and hopes for something better if not for themselves at least for their offsprings. A drunk sired John O'Brien, yet the lad once believed that hard work was the avenue out. However, his toil on the docks has left him with deep doubts and the realization that the odds are he will end up just like his dad.
Upon meets his younger sister's teacher Mary Llewellyn, John renews his belief he will make something of himself because now he has the impetus to become a better person. Mary comes from a higher class than John yet prefers working with the children of the FIFTEEN STREETS in the belief that education is the ticket out of destitution. As John and Mary fall in love, the pressure increases to end this forbidden relationship that binds two people from opposite sides of the tracks.
Although the class differences blocking a relationship seem antiquated, this reprint of a classic Catherine Cookson book stands the test of time due to the ageless themes that survival and intelligence is inadequate without love, passion, and hope. The descriptions of the FIFTEEN STREETS neighborhood are sadly realistically horrifying then and now yet brilliantly interwoven into a powerful plot. Fans will admire Mary and root for John to overcome the impossible, which is why the deceased Ms. Cookson remains a favorite.

a great book on priesthood

For our upcoming class on the Theology of Holy Orders, we are required to read large portions of Father Jean Galot's Theology of the Priesthood. Since the Kindle edition was less expensive and more readily available, I bought that copy rather than the print edition. However, since the Kindle edition has no page numbers, I decided to read the whole book so as not to accidentally miss any of what I was supposed to read and because I had heard great things about it. Here then is a short book review which I wrote about this work of Father Galot's, originally published on Goodreads and also available at www.bricehigginbotham.com.

I found Father Galot's treatment of the priesthood to be very cogent and comprehensive. While the first parts include, in my estimation, a bit of eisegesis (reading into Scripture), I find most of his work with Scripture to be good exegesis. (I'm kind of a stickler about Biblical interpretation, so the eisegesis is why I gave 4 rather than 5 stars. At the same time, when he wrote this book, Father Galot was a lot older and a lot smarter than me, so I admit that I could be missing something.)

At any rate, Father Galot is not only doing exegesis, but also theology; he's asking what the Scriptures actually mean (exegesis), then drawing logical implications therefrom. This is doing theology well--rooted in Revelation and using God-given reason to understand what that Revelation means, especially what it means for us today.

The core point which I drew from the work (which I think truly is the main point) is that, to learn about the priesthood, we must always go back to Jesus the great High Priest in whom every priest participates. If our thoughts about priesthood are based more on our own predispositions than the Revelation of God through His Eternal Word, then we will most certainly go astray. At the same time, if we want to delve deeper into priestly identity (both intellectually and spiritually), we must meditate deeply on Jesus and allow His Mystery to penetrate our hearts. This goes for the lay person who shares in the Common Priesthood, for the Priest who shares in the Ministerial Priesthood, and for the lay person who, in exercising his Common Priesthood, might better receive the shepherding of the Ministerial Priest.

All in all, this is a fantastic book which I highly recommend to one who wants to read a deeply rich and deeply Scriptural understanding of the being of the priest (from which his "doing" flows). It is not unattainably challenging, but is also not terribly easy to read. I would estimate it to be at about the reading level of an early college student. If one wants a very practical treatment which emphasizes the "doings" of the priest (though also recognizing the importance of the priest's "being"), I recommend Priests for the Third Millennium by Timothy Cardinal Dolan.

This is the best written book I have come across to this point on the topic. Clear, to the point, informative and citing sources. It explains the priesthood especially from a scriptural point of view; with particular emphasis on the book of Hebrews. Its well written and thorough.

They Called Him “Mister Doctor”

Janusz Korczak was a pediatrician who gave up a potentially lucrative practice to found an orphanage for the children he loved. And the children loved him; the nickname they gave their mentor was “Mister Doctor.” In this book by the same title, his story is told from the perspective of one of the orphans—who could be any of the orphans or all the orphans.

The book opens with the last days in final period of the famous orphanage on Krochmalna Street; the Nazis invaded Warsaw on September 1, 1939, and shortly thereafter ordered the city’s Jewish population into the Warsaw Ghetto. The journey is one fraught with darkness and fear, as shown by the somber illustrations showing barbed wire. They walk past the house of horrors they know as the Black Palace. (I believe the author was referring to the infamous Pawiak Prison; I doubt the children actually passed that landmark, as it was on the opposite side of the Ghetto. However, the episode adds literary value to the narrative.) The horrors of the trek are in marked contrast to the soft, warm hands of Doctor Korczak and illustration of his favorite fairy tale character, Puss in Boots, bounding over a barbed blockade.

Their new home was the best Korczak could find, but “the house of tears” at 33 Chlodna Street is clearly nothing like their beautiful old home; in one illustration, even the houseflies on the window sill are dead. Though flashbacks, the narrator recalls all the Old Doctor’s innovations: the children’s court, their newspaper, the bulletin board, postcards…. In the Ghetto, everyone clings to hope by celebrating their Jewish heritage and identity. Some children learn Hebrew. A professor teaches the children a poem, “Brothers,” by the great local poet, I.L Peretz, which they make into a song: “Light and dark, and in between/ All the colors come together./ We are all sisters and brothers/ From one father and one mother,/ And God created all of us./ The whole world is our nation. / We are all sisters and brothers.”

The most poignant part of the life of Janusz Korczak is the final march, which has been remembered in diaries, poems, movies, and statues. In Mister Doctor, the last walk is portrayed in a beautiful fold-out. But the story does not end there; the Rights of the Child would be taken up by the U.N. and given global stature. Perhaps little Henryk’s canary wasn’t buried after all. Perhaps he flew up into the heavens.

Mister Doctor is a picture book, but with the amount of text on each page, it is more suitable for older children to read on their own. The illustrations are beautifully executed and complement the narrative perfectly. The book is a little pricey, but the quality of materials is exceptional; it is issued in a library binding. Clearly, this is a book to be kept and treasured. It is curious that Mister Doctor is also available as an e-book. I fear an electronic medium would not do justice to the work of art this book is. The title is noteworthy, as it is the same as the first Polish biography, the one written by Hanna Olczak, who knew Korczak and Madame Stefa personally. A two page biography of Janusz Korczak puts the narrative in perspective; that, along with a short bibliography, will help students doing a book report—or a report on Mister Doctor himself, to pass his legend on.

Dr. Korczak is Mr. doctor. Mr. Doctor lives on the top floor of an orphanage for Jewish children. He ran the orphanage in a way that was considered revolutionary. The children rule themselves. Why did Mr. Doctor do this? Why did the children agree to do it? Amazingly, the children do. Mr. Doctor also gives the children different cards, one for doing good, one for memories (a way to remember a special experience) etc. When the Nazis come and take the orphans to the ghetto, Mr. Doctor decides to make it fun by having the children pretend they are a circus parade. When it is time to leave the ghetto, the good Mr. Doctor goes with them rather than accepting the opportunity to live. Why?

This true story is amazing. It grabs you as you read. The author writes this simply but elegantly. You are drawn into it also by the excellent illustrations. I finished the book with my heart fully engaged as it is a sad but necessary book to read so we do not forget the horror of the Nazis.

Good Book to Intro Kids to the Holocaust

Written in a story format and told from the point of view of one of the children, Mister Doctor is the story of Janusz Korczak and his orphans during WWII. Even though he was famous, he still chose to stay with his young charges to their ultimate end. Mister Doctor is aimed at students in the lower grades. The drawings and sketches effectively show the dreary reality that the children lived in with stunning artistry. Janusz Korczak was and is famous in his native Poland as a writer, military doctor, and champion of children. It is great that he can become known elsewhere.

One look at the cover tells you that Juliet "Aunt Peg" Anderson was a physically beautiful woman. She was also a pornography star who preached the importance of sexuality and attempted to walk that talk in her own life. Because the author looks unflinchingly at the ways Juliet failed as well as her successes, this biography provides much food for thought. Once upon a time... Before the porn world went totally anal. Totally extreme, and devoid of human emotion. There was a period known as the "Golden Age." Juliet Carr aka Juliet Anderson, was one of its brightest, and also, oldest stars. She was also one of its most unique.

Indeed it is a scholarly, methodical and detailed account, with complete access to personal photos and comments from family and friends. Author Marian Rhys was her dear friend too, so you can well imagine the emotions she put aside to finally pay tribute to someone who brought a little as Juliet would often say, "love and lust" into this crazy world.

What makes Juliet stand-out from so many other sex legends, is that she had both style and grace, she knew how to tease, and she really enjoyed the sex for the most part. It was creative, and it was fun, an escape from personal physical and mental pain. Whether on film, video or on a live stage, Juliet knew how to seduce both men and women. She knew the camera, how to write, produce, and even rig the lights and even make the
coffee for the crew.

Juliet had brains, and she had travelled the world, having learnt several languages. She had made mistakes and paid dearly for them. The adult movie companies always praised her, but never felt the need to properly compensate her for the millions she has made them. Five years after her death, she's still a good seller!

This is a great book--it gives one a picture of both the "Golden Age" of porn and a detailed biography of a fascinating women that is revelatory and very moving. Juliet Anderson emerges as a complex figure, who on the one hand experienced a number of painful events, but who also viewed the world in a very life-affirming manner. It is thoroughly researched, well written, and a pleasure to read. Anyone interested in the history of the porn industry and/or the story of an interesting figure will find this book genuinely rewarding.

Yes, please.

The other reviews of this story are correct. It is a wondeful read, and simply too short. Although I did like the unexpectedly cut-off ending, I would like a Resurrecting Jessica II. It's clearly fantasy-fiction, and very simple at that; this is not in any way a serious endeavor of transgenderism, it's rather like candy; just for fun. Written in *very* simple language common of erotica, this non-erotica short story is dramatic at first with sorrow, and immediately after hilarious and light-hearted for the rest of the adventure. I loved it. Want more. I could have taken off one star for the length, but decided to add it back for my pure enjoyment and to support the genre and its authors.

Hard to believe

The main challenge of any MTF transformation is to make it believable, if you don't believe it then it doesn't work. That is what happens with this story.

Even though there is a "magic transformation", the conditions for it to happen are too simplistic. Would anyone accept being changed of sex without a minimal resistance (at least at the beginning)?

My other thought is that we don't get to know Jessica once she is resurrected. When she comes back the book ends, which is very disappointing.

Nice read.

Great story line. But a bit weak in the area of real passion. I loved the beginning, but the ending came up really off the wall to me. The author made the main character seem like a really loose cannon at the end. This is a good read but not a real page turner.
