The birth of the Ottoman state is shrouded in legend. Whatever the truth of its origins, the Ottomans formed an Empire which almost succeeded in bringing Christian Europe to its knees. During the last decades of the 13th century, the ambitious Osman Bey's tiny mountain state took eight frontier castles plus the Turkish town of Eskisehir. In 1299 Osman seized Yenisehir after working up the Kara Su valley. With this as its first real capital, the Ottoman state emerged into history poised above the fertile shores of the Sea of Marmara.

About the Author
David Nicolle PhD was born in 1944 and was educated at Highgate School. For eight years he worked in the BBC Arabic Service. In 1971 he went 'back to school', gaining an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies and a PhD from Edinburgh University. For some years he taught art and architectural history at Yarmuk University, Jordan. David has written many Osprey titles, including MAA 140 Armies of the Ottoman Turks, MAA 320 Armies of the Caliphates 862–1098, and Campaign 43 Fornovo 1495.

Like all Osprey books this title is an excellent visual source; though the text is also useful it does not go very deep. Buy this book for the pictures! As always, Mr. McBride's artwork is fabulous, richly portraying the beautiful arms and armor of the Ottoman Turks and the skilled warriors that used them.

Again, the text is not worthless or as far as I can tell inaccurate; in fact, I found this book to be one of Nicolle's best. The three-page chronology in the back, along with the examination of the tactics used at various battles are the most useful parts.

In summary, like the similar Osprey titles 'Saladin and the Saracens', 'Armies of the Muslim Conquest', and 'The Armies of Islam 7th-11th Centuries', this book's text would be a great introduction, but the photographs and especially the color plates can be used and enjoyed by anyone with an interest in the last and the greatest of the medieval Islamic Turkish states.

A Reference Book on the Armies of the Ottoman Empire at the Peak of the Empire's Expansion and Influence

This a reference book on the armies of the early Ottoman Empire as it was expanding to its high tide. The years coved by this book is the apogee of the Ottoman Empire. It was after this period of time that the Ottoman Empire fell into decline and eventually became the first nation/empire to be called the "Sick Man of Europe." There were other entities like the Austro-Hungarian Empire which were called "the Sick Man of Europe" at various times throughout European history, but the Ottoman Empire was the first. This book also contains a three-page chronology of events from 1280 in the current era (C.E.) with the rise of Osman I the founder of the Ottoman Empire until 1774 when the Byzantine Empire lost the port of Azov to the Russian Army during the reign of Catherine II (The Great).

The Rise and Fall of the Ottoman Empire

"Armies of the Ottoman Turks 1300-1774" by David Nicolle briefly reviews the history, armies, weapons, uniforms, and battles of the Ottoman Empire. There are eight striking full-color plates illustrated by Angus McBride that help give the history a visual representation. As with other Osprey Men-at-Arms volumes, there is a lot of information in the 40 pages (including index) and serves as a great introduction to the topic.

As good as an introduction this book is, the author does use some technical terms that may confuse someone new to the subject. However, with a little work consulting a dictionary, one can get through most of this difficulty. "Armies of the Ottoman Turks 1300-1774" also includes several maps, most of which are helpful (one of them is hard to read because it is jammed with the names of cities and it is hard to easily tell where the bodies of water and land meet). Furthermore, a chronology of the conquests and losses sums up nearly 500 years of the rise and fall of the Ottoman Turks.

I found this book to be a great resource in learning about the Ottoman Turks. The costumes, arms, and armor of the Ottoman Turks are interesting and elegant. I enjoyed not only learning about their military conquests, but also the images of who they were.

Teach Yourself Visually books in general are my favorite ways to learn software

Teach Yourself Visually books in general are my favorite ways to learn software. They show you step-by-step how to accomplish whatever task you want to do with the program. Even more interesting is that ALL the screenshots are in color, as opposed to the black and white that many books use. I have always liked this aspect to this series.s For the QuickBooks book specifically, it has already saved me time. I use this program regularly for recording things in the check register. There are a couple other tasks that I use occasionally, but rarely. Each time, I have to slowly review menu list by menu list, to figure out how to do what I need to accomplish. With this book, I found the page (describing what to do) literally in ten seconds. And with the step-by-step instructions, it demonstrated exactly what to do. I wish I had this book several years ago when I first started using QuickBooks.

A great task-based, instructional book for the visual learners

Teach Yourself Visually QuickBooks 2015 is a quick instructional guide that shows you the how to perform various tasks in QuickBooks without the long winded explanations and technical details. The book covers important topics over 15 chapters, ranging from getting started in the software, invoicing, customers and vendors, payroll, taxes, time/mileage tracking, recording payments to managing bills and bank accounts. These topics are thoughtfully broken into 2-page modular lessons that are designed to walk you through step by step, complemented visually by full-color screenshots and illustrations. It's a great way to learn how to use a specific feature of the software quickly, without getting bogged down by technical backgrounds and explanations.

The book does a good job of getting the readers started in actually performing a specific task in no time. If you are a visual learner or like to follow step-by-step instructions without all the details, this book is a great guide for you. One caveat though. It doesn't distinguish between the different editions of QuickBooks 2015 and whether certain lessons may be applicable.

Great for a quick reference in color

I just received this book (soft cover) from Amazon and all of the pages are cut off on the right side of the book.
Looks very strange, not like the "Look Inside" preview pages shown on the website.
I intend to return this to Amazon and try again.

On a positve note, it is in color and from what I can see, looks helpful.

The second copy I received looks good. It's all in color.
The screenshots are accurate to the Quickbooks program.
The book is a good, quick reference for "how to", but it's not a comprehensive tutorial package for beginners.

As his ox-drawn cart labors north, Faredoon Jungelwalla has no destination in mind. He just has faith, as all Parsees have, that he will know it when he sees it. And in Lahore his faith is rewarded. Inspired by the small Parsee community rushing to greet him, he settles in then and there, opening a store and depositing his wife and her loathsome mother Jerbanoo on the floor above. As years pass and his wealth increases, so does Jerbanoo's elephantine girth, but neither measure matches the dimension of their hatred for each other. Still, Faredoon is a realist. Things could change. The death of his favorite son is proof, as is the unexpected marriage of his ugly son Behram to the beautiful Tanya Easymoney. And India is changing. "Jolly good for jolly good, fart for fart, the cultures of East and West" are meeting. This is a comic novel stuffed with rich, spicy characters. Sidhwa makes every step of Faredoon's journey through time and culture a joy to read.

About the Author
Bapsi Sidhwa is the internationally acclaimed, award-winning author of four novels: An American Brat, The Pakistani Bride, The Crow Eaters and Ice-Candy-Man, which was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and was made into the film 1947: Earth by Deepa Mehta. She is also the editor of the anthology City of Sin and Splendour: Writings on Lahore.

Her work has been published in ten countries and has been translated into several languages. Born in Karachi, and brought up in Lahore, Sidhwa now lives in Houston, Texas.

unique and delightful read

Bapsi Sidhwa’s obvious affection for the Parsee community sits at the heart of the novel yet in no way prevents her from poking fun at its all too human foibles. The humour is irreverent but irresistible.

Humor aside, it is the emotional ones that will grip your mind & heart. I still remember the scene of Soli’s funeral where the touching humanity of his otherwise improbably insufferable father overwhelmed me.

Sidhwa--herself a Parsi from Lahore--sets up a very convincing fictional narration of “Freddy,” his family and how he lives and makes others live their lives. By the way, Crow eaters is the slang for noisy talkative people, if you were wondering.

The story line flows effortlessly as Bapsi spans about half a century covering the lives of two generations of Parsees in Lahore . The glimpses of Lahore in the early 20th century provide an interesting backdrop to the novel. Crow Eaters is not only entertaining and funny but also provides a good understanding of the history, religious practices and ethics of the Parsees in the subcontinent, a small community that has survived by being adaptive , adopting the dress, food and language of its host nation, yet preserving its identity by maintaining age old customs of fire worship and death rites.

Interesting book about pre-partition India

I was interested in the book because I spent four years in Lahore and have very fond memories of it.
This book didn't give me much in the way of incite into Lahore in pre-partition days, but it was interesting.
The beginning of the book is very amusing - about the trip by bullock cart to Lahore but it gets a little fanciful after than and not so believable.
An easy read and entertaining.

About the Author
Dr. Solomon has written several leading college-level textbooks in biology and in human anatomy and physiology. Her books have been translated into more than 10 languages. Dr. Solomon earned an M.S. from the University of Florida and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of South Florida. Dr. Solomon taught biology and nursing students for more than 20 years. In addition to being a biologist and science author, Dr. Solomon is a bio-psychologist with a special interest in the neuro-physiology of traumatic experience. Her research has focused on the neurological, endocrine, and psychological effects of trauma, including Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and development of maladaptive coping strategies. Dr. Solomon has presented her research at many national and international conferences, and her work has been published in leading professional journals. Dr. Solomon has been profiled more than 30 times in leading publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who in the World.

Dr. Berg is an award-winning teacher and author who taught for 17 years at the University of Maryland in College Park. It was at this institution that she received numerous teaching and service awards. Dr. Berg is also the recipient of many national and regional awards including the National Science Teachers Association Award for Innovations in College Science Teaching, the Nation's Capital Area Disabled Student Services Award, and the Washington Academy of Sciences Award in University Science Teaching.

Dr. Martin is Professor Emeritus and former Director of General Biology, Division of Life Sciences, Rutgers University. Dr. Martin received an M.S. at Florida State University, where she studied the chromosomes of related plant species to understand their evolutionary relationships. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied the genetics of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, and then conducted postdoctoral research at Princeton University. Dr. Martin has taught General Biology and other courses at Rutgers for over 30 years and has been involved in writing textbooks since 1988. She is immensely grateful that her decision to study biology in college has led to a career that allows her many ways to share her excitement about all aspects of biology.
