Miner Jack and His Unforgettable People in the Coal Fields, by Jack Katlic

In 1948, Jack Katlic entered a coal mine for the first time, as part of a surveying team. He has been intimately involved in the coal mining industry ever since, retiring as senior vice president, American Electric Power, Fuel Supply.

This book tells the stories of the many ''unforgettables'' he has encountered in the industry, from face workers to board chairpersons, across six decades and six major coal and industry organizations.

Miner Jack and His Unforgettable People in the Coal Fields also describes the main mining equipment developed and used in each time frame, information little known to the general public.

Coal mining, the author explains, is an advanced, sophisticated industry, in contrast to general belief. It is the people whose stories are told here who have made it so.

The Coal Industry from 1948 to 1993, a personal history
By Kathleen M. O'neill
BOOK REVIEW; "Miner Jack and His Unforgettable People in the Coal Fields" by Jack Katlic, published by Dorrance Publishing

I chose this book to read and review because I wanted something I knew nothing about. I was raised in North Georgia so the mining industry was never far away. This book would definitely interest those who have worked in mining or have a deep interest in it.

The author covers the history of mining from a personal level from 1948 until 1993 when he retired. The people and experiences he recounts are "unforgettable" and I can appreciate his writing these memoirs from his mining career. The book is a fantastic history of mining and what was going on at the time with the unions, economy and the technological changes that improved the efficiency and safety of mining.

At the end of the book, the writer has included several speeches he gave. For those of you who want ammunition to prove that global warming and acid rain are not products of coal mining and that all of that is media hype, you'll find help in these speeches. Actually the speeches are well written.

There was however one drawback to the book, I had to push my way through each chapter due to the author going off on tangents. In the beginning of the book he said that he resisted any editing; that was a shame. I can accept grammatical uniqueness, but I found myself going back to the beginning of each chapter to see what I had missed as he jumped from one subject to another. That was disconcerting but I did make it through and what I got from the book was one man's life and that was good.

I would recommend this book for those interested in the human aspects of mining which I am sure is why the author wrote and published this book.

Review
“I have appreciated the highly original, solid, and beautiful work of David Fideler for many years. Love’s Alchemy could come only from his wide knowledge and sense of aesthetics. In its musical words, the Sufi poets paint a delicate word-bridge between the earthly and the spiritual, and they charm us, wakening the human urge to transcend ourselves.”
— Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul and Dark Nights of the Soul

“Love’s Alchemy takes us into the tavern of mystical love, full of intoxicating treasures of Sufi poetry. Here are the masters of love, Rumi among them, whose words speak directly to the soul. With beauty and wisdom they teach us the truth of our eternal nature and how the heart opens to God. Treasure these poems and allow them to nourish the secret and hidden parts of your innermost being.”
— Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, PhD, author of Sufism: The Transformation of the Heart

“Love’s Alchemy is a delightful and absorbing collection of translations from the major Persian Sufi poets. David and Sabrineh Fideler have provided authentic interpretations of these mystical texts in memorable form. Lovers of Rumi will be pleased to find so many other great authors from this tradition.”
— Carl W. Ernst, Zachary Smith Professor, Department of Religious Studies, University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill

“This is how Sufis themselves teach Sufism: through poetry as alchemy. And these translations are indeed transmutations, changing the gold of Persian into the gold of English.”
— Peter Lamborn Wilson, author of Sacred Drift: Essays on the Margins of Islam

About the Author

A recognized authority on the Pythagorean school, he is the editor of "The Pythagorean Sourcebook and Library"; author of "Jesus Christ, Sun of God"; translator of "Love s Alchemy"; and editor of the humanities journal "Alexandria".

Clean & Elegant rendition of inspiring poetry
By Dominick Bruno Jr.
I delayed picking this book up for awhile after it came out - I'm not usually one for poetry. It was my loss, and a great one at that.

This volume of thought-provoking and inspirational writings by many great Sufi poets is of immense value to spiritual folks of any faith as well as those who simply appreciate fine poetry. The translation by David & Sabrineh Fideler is very clean and sparing - spartan while still exhibiting an elegance that only comes from both knowledge of the language as well as the meanings intended by the authors.

It's really rare that a compendium of poetry can serve admirably both for leisure reading and academic study, but they've really pulled it off here. The included glossary also helps to explain Sufi symbolism to the reader unacquainted with such things, and thus the work can also serve well as a da'wa tool.

To sum it up, I highly recommend this book & thank the translators for the excellent job they have done here.

An Exceptional Collection of Poetry
By Bob Tarte
This is an exceptional collection of Sufi poetry from a wide range of writers, some well known in the West and some fairly obscure. David and Sabrineh Fideler's translations are lovely and straight forward, and their choice of poems benefit both newcomers to Sufism and those looking for the deepest truths. Highly recommended.

A concise and enjoyable introduction to the Catalan painter
By Christopher Culver
Taschen's "Basic Art" is a series of short, full-colour introductions to various artists that all weigh in at only 96 pages. These are an excellent way to discover painters you don't know about yet, and I've enjoyed working my way through the series. This volume on Joan Miro features a text by Janis Mink.

Mink charts Miro's stylistic evolution in a clear fashion, often mentioning relationships with other artists and writers of the day that influenced his work. The break from realism to fanciful representation is elucidated, and Mink really inspires a passion for deciphering Miro's language of symbols. Nonetheless, I felt that Mink's text had two weakness. The first is that it often makes reference to paintings that, perhaps for reasons of copyright, could not be reproduced within the book. Entries in the "Basic Art" series are usually entirely self-contained, but Mink would force the reader to seek out another introduction to Miro to understand her writing. The second weakness is that Mink does not say anything about Miro's relationship with the Spanish state in the postwar era, something that would surely interest many readers who know of Miro as "the Catalan national painter".

Nonetheless, these are essentially minor quibbles. If you want a quick introduction to Joan Miro, this is a good bet.

The Terror Conspiracy: Deception, 9/11 and the Loss of Liberty, by Jim Marrs

Jim Marrs presents the official government pronouncement on 9/11 as an obvious conspiracy. The only question is whose conspiracy it was. According to the government, the conspiracy involved about nineteen suicidal Middle Eastern Muslim terrorists, their hearts full of hatred for American freedom and democracy, who hijacked four airliners, crashing two into the Twin Towers of New York City's World Trade Center and a third into the Pentagon, near Washington, DC. The fourth airliner reportedly crashed in western Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to overcome the hijackers. To add insult to injury, this whole incredible Mission Impossible operation, which defeated a forty-billion-dollar defense system, was under the total control of a devout Muslim cleric using a computer while hiding in a cave in Afghanistan.

Primarily using mainstream media and government reports, Marrs has crafted the definitive journalistic account exposing the likely complicity of the Bush administration in the 9/11 attacks, providing a history of the overt and covert causes of the events. However, his analysis goes far beyond 9/11, enabling us to understand the motivation behind American foreign policy, with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as primary examples of the US government's secret agenda.

A surprisingly solid effort from Marrs..
By Anthony J. Thorne
I've known Jim Marrs (not personally) as the author of the reasonably well-respected "CROSSFIRE - THE PLOT THAT KILLED KENNEDY", and also, more recently, as an author interested in somewhat more esoteric subjects unrelated to 9/11. I bought this book to add to my growing 9/11 research library, but was a little unsure of what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this book.

Marrs is on his best behavior here. THE TERROR CONSPIRACY is a very detailed, clear-headed and up-to-date overview of the holes in the official story, the context these events took place in, and a likely 'big picture' overview of the entire 9/11 conspiracy. This is all perhaps par for the course with any good recent 9/11 truth publication but THE TERROR CONSPIRACY exceeded my expectations in the following ways:

The book is extremely well-researched and footnoted. I had read somewhat mixed things about Marrs's prior 9/11 book INSIDE JOB and wasn't sure what to expect with this book. Marrs writes "THE TERROR CONSPIRACY greatly expands, updates and replaces INSIDE JOB in the light of events and discoveries since 2002". Given the quality of this new volume, I wouldn't be surprised if the book was a complete re-write. Marrs makes references to events occurring as recently as a few months ago from early 2006 and briefly quotes from volumes like Webster Tarpley's excellent 9/11 SYNTHETIC TERROR: MADE IN USA, among others. There's a 30 page index (not really footnotes, but rather sources, other publications, books quoted, and URL's) that suggests that Marrs has kept up with the required reading and drawn from the best available current evidence. There's good and bad stuff about 9/11 available in print and online and Marrs seems to have made a real effort to sort the wheat from the chaff, making reference to guys like Michel Chossudovky, Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed and newspapers like THE GUARDIAN. (In fact, after browsing back through the index for the purposes of this review, I feel smarter already.) With all the available material out there on 9/11 conspiracies it'd be a worry if someone didn't take pains to only use the most respectable sources. Marrs seems to have been aware of that danger and has chosen his carefully.

I also didn't notice any mistakes in his overall analysis. THE TERROR CONSPIRACY is the 9th or 10th 9/11 conspiracy book that I have purchased, and some of them have been better than others. Marrs makes his case more efficiently than Michael Ruppert does in CROSSING THE RUBICON, and avoids egregious blunders like the blanket dismissal by author Sander Hicks of anomalies surrounding the Pentagon crash in THE BIG WEDDING. There's also no reference to `In Plane Sight'-era nonsense like `tubes on the airplane hitting the WTC', which I found in the otherwise passable book 9/11 REVEALED by Rowland Morgan and Ian Henshall. I've been reading and joining the dots on the seemingly ever-more-complicated events of 9/11 for about 4 years now, and I thought Marrs had done a good job of coming to many of the same conclusions that I had reached. (Does this means I'm biased?)

For the curious, a breakdown of THE TERROR CONSPIRACY, (a chunky, nicely printed 482 page book with no illustrations, but good cover art front and back), is as follows.

INTRODUCTION (13 pages): Marrs discusses what lead him to write the book, and notes how the original publishers from a few years ago developed cold feet for the project

PART 1 - THE EVENTS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 (169 PAGES): Marrs sequentially covers all the events of the day, from the hijackings to WTC collapse, insider stock trades, Flight 93 and more, in a good, detailed and well-written overview. As Marrs writes, "This independent timeline is based on the best factual information now available, not on the `official' timeline that has been shown to be inaccurate and even misleading". This is a useful, one-stop guide to the whole day.

PART 2 - WAR FOR OIL AND DRUGS (82 pages): The context of events before and afterwards, with thoughtful discussion of PNAC goals, Cheney's financial dealings and Bin Laden's role as a useful patsy.

PART 3 - THE 9/11 BACKLASH (88 pages): In one of the more interesting sections of the book, Marrs thoroughly dissects the post-9/11 laws passed and later behavior done by the Bush administration, with the Patriot Act put into perspective as part of a larger (well-documented) effort to reduce civil liberties.

PART 4 - HISTORICAL PRECEDENTS (59 pages): The Reichstag fire, Pearl Harbour, various deceptions surrounding the first Gulf War and Operation Northwoods are all discussed, along with Bush's dismal performance as President prior to the 9/11 attacks. Marrs ends this final section with a thoughtful conclusion titled `What Do We Know Now?", which wraps up his arguments. I think his earlier CROSSFIRE book ended in a similar effective manner. The aforementioned 31 pages of sources and a 15 page index follow. Bear in mind, these listed sections in the book proper contain a lot of extra stuff that I haven't mentioned in my above glib summaries. The contents page of THE TERROR CONSPIRACY is quite long and all four parts of the book include lots of useful subchapters on different topics, with Marrs keeping things consistently readable, interesting and well-observed.

Purchasers sympathetic to 9/11 truth should also note that THE TERROR CONSPIRACY has a special, surprisingly valuable bonus essay at the back - THE PENTAGON ATTACK PAPERS, by researcher Barbara Honegger (26 pages). I hadn't encountered this before (though it does seem to be online if you search for it), and Honegger makes some sharply observed points that were new to me. The bottom line is that THE TERROR CONSPIRACY is a surprisingly solid, well-written, and well-researched overview, and probably goes into my top 2 or 3 books on the events of 9/11. I'd recommend it as a purchase and can't see how many people would be disappointed with it if they buy it.

Do not trust this book
By Alexander E. Paulsen
Do not trust this book. - I am quoting from the book itself. The author insists that you take no book written by anyone including his at face value. Do your own research. That being said....

There is no better book with which to begin that research that the "Terror Conspiracy". If you are already a student of 9/11 the first section of this book may appear a little tedious. You might think "I know all this, lets get to some new information"

The author is however buiding a solid factual foundation that will support the rest of the book. If you want to know the full story find it here. By the time the reader gets to page 169 she will realize that the author had methodically built a solid case that completely crushes the government's story on every level.

David Ray Griffin's excellent book "The New Pearl Harbor" and "The Christian Faith and 911" speak much about the facts of the event itself.

After Marrs convinces the most skeptical who have read up to Part II the book now delves into the history of US state sponsored terror and the full background of the evil that has infected Washington today.

I recommend getting this book as soon as possible while you still can. To those who think this is all "conspiracy theory" just go read the text of the PATRIOT act and the Detainee bill that just passed. It is now legal for the Federal government to "disappear" someone it doesn't like for any reason or no reason at all but merely on the say-so of one man.

Read this book and you will know the true nature of what was just rammed through congress and this book will give you insight to what it all means to the people of this country.

Congress has officially repealed the Bill of Rights. Don't beleive me? Good! I don't want you to. Find out for yourself. Wake up frmop your drooling stupor in front of the Fox News[sic] channel and do your own research.

If you do not accept the premise of this book, great. Read it anyway just so you know what people are thinking. If you think you support the official conspiracy theory then read this even if you want to debunk it. Who knows, you might learn something O'Reilly, Hannity and Rush missed.

Like all of Jim Marrs' books this is exceptionally well written and quite gripping. Marrs backs up up everything with factual and documented evidence.

Wake up America while you still can. Read this book NOW, then go to Google video and watch "Terrorstorm". Do it TODAY!

A little advice for those that will undoubtedly discredit this book...
By Kuehnrat
It doesn't matter which side of this issue you stand (someone seeking the truth vs. a mindless, spoon-fed sheep), the fact remains that Jim Marrs identifies holes, discrepancies, misrepresentations, lies, omissions, etc. in the official 9/11 Commission Report that should bother every American citizen; enough so that they are motivated to investigate further. If you already subscribe to his conspiracy theory, then this book is a no-brainer; I'm sure you'll enjoy it thoroughly. If you don't buy into his conspiracy theory, then do some research after you read this book and formulate a better theory. Regardless of where you stand, every intelligent person has to admit that the 9/11 Commission Report is at least 50% fiction, if not more. It's just a matter of common sense. A simple review of the facts is all it takes (and perhaps a reasonable understanding of basic conceptual physics). If you aren't convinced by the obvious, then I recommend you put down this book and get back to the flock; I'm sure they miss you. Don't submit a review discrediting this book just because you don't agree with the author's opinions or conclusions (or his previous books). You'd be wasting everyone's time, including your own. Doing so would be a clear indication that you missed the point completely: (1.) Be angry that you were lied to. (2.) Be angry that your civil liberties are being systematically stripped from you. (3.) Seek out the truth. It's as simple as that. To quote the first sentence in this author's earlier book about the JFK assassination ("Crossfire"), "Do not trust this book." He goes on to say that he has simply collected and presented evidence; you be the judge. If you read this book and still wholeheartedly believe the 9/11 Commission Report, then I'd like to discuss with you a proposition wherein you transfer all of the money in your savings account over to my savings account. It's a matter of national security. Really. Trust me. Actually, I'm pretty sure it's required by the USA PATRIOT Act, so you better get to it, my little sheep. If you love America and the Constitution as dearly and passionately as I do, then seek out the truth. This book is a good place to start.

Sound Advice: Voiceover from an Audio Engineer's Perspective, by Dan Friedman

Writing about sound is not an easy task. I've heard it compared to explaining visual art to the blind. However, after years of working with voiceover talent, being asked the same questions and dealing with the same issues, I was inspired to give it a try. I've written this book to give you a sound engineer's perspective on your career as a voiceover talent. In this book I've tried to provide you with basic information about audio and equipment that is taught in recording schools. Hopefully, this information will provide a foundation for you to get to know your equipment better and understand how it works. Understanding your audio equipment is critical to helping you sound your best as well as helping you effectively communicate with those trying to help you when problems occur. I've also tried to address proper studio etiquette and many of the bad practices I've seen, heard and experienced from voiceover talents over the years. My intention is not to scold or criticize, but simply to provide those of you who are new to the business with information you may not know, and also to shed light on some mistakes that many of you, who have been in the business for awhile, may not know you are making. This book is not about how to read scripts or how to be a successful voiceover artist. This book compliments the many books that have been written about those topics. You may find it helpful to sit in front of your equipment as you read through some of the sections. Follow the procedures I describe and learn what the microphone, knobs, faders and other various elements in your studio can do. Most importantly, open your ears and really listen. Listen to how you sound and learn what you can do to bring out the best in your voice. I am passionate about what I do and I know most of you are too. This is a great business. Thank you for reading my book, I hope you find it helpful and enjoyable.

Perfect in every way
By Corky
Wow Do I disagree with the previous reviewer!!!!

Having spent over 35 years being a voice talent as my sole profession I feel very qualified to comment.

Never a week goes by without someone asking me how to become a voice talent. All the books I've previously recommended are mostly blue-sky-you-can-make-big-bucks-easy kind of bologna that doesn't help at all. This book is real. Dan Friedman doesn't try to sell you a load of BS he simply tells you what you need to be a professional voice talent. The one area that this book is VERY strong in is the one area that other books fall absolutely flat in and thats the tech part. Friedman does an excellent job of explaining basic but very important issues like; mic proximity, EQ, compression, etc

Frankly I've worked with seasoned professionals who need to read this book for its simple to understand yet accurate explanations of the basics of voice recording.

Want somebody to blow smoke up your skirt and tell you that you'll be rich overnight as a voice talent? Buy some other book!
Want to learn how it really is in a working studio environment and how to set up your own voice over studio at home and get started in the REAL voice over world? Buy Sound Advice by Dan Friedman!

A high price for a so-so book.
By H.L. Guildenstern
This book provides some basic information that would be helpful to a beginner in voice over, but there are plenty of other books out there which cost less and offer more. Sound Advice is brief - about 70 pages - and it mostly covers the fundamentals: what types of microphones are out there, what a preamp does, how to connect them all, etc. The author then very briefly touches on the subjects of compression and EQ toward the end of the book.

The information found in this book is already available in many other publications out there, and for far less than $35. For a book that is marketed as an audio engineer's inside perspective, it's a bit of a let down.

Very helpful!
By Matthew C
This book is clear and concise! It definitely has its limitations, but that's because, well, it is a book about sound. In the brief space used, Friedman offers useful advice for new voice talents such as myself. Just bear in mind that additional sources will probably be needed for a successful voice over career.

One of the best books i have ever read
By Isabel Walters
Dive Book 3 is one of the best books i have ever read. It is about these four teen interns that are in Cote St. Luce on a diving internship for the summer. They start off having a good time and everything is running smoothly. But, after about three weeks of being there they find out that their captain is a treasure hunter and not a scientist trying to "learn" about the ocean. He is just using them for the treasure that they find. But what they werent expecting was a few deaths because of this situation. They get through the summer by sticking together. To find out what happens you will have to read the book, but the story makes more sense if you read the series!!!

I really think that these stories are great to read and are perfect for people that like stories with mystery and action. I think that these books are great for anyone in grades 4-8th!!!!

dive 3: the danger
By A Customer
When the going gets tough friends stick together, right? Well these are pretty close friends if you ask me. Dante's colorblind, Star got the binds, and Kas is going on a 703 feet deep dive, as for Adriana, she's stuck on some internship while her brother and uncle are on some archeologist dig. Their friend and Captain died because of one person. Now they have found the Griffin with a hidden story behind it. The only thing that stands in their way is an 18 foot tiger shark, and Marina.

I love adventure books, ecspecially this one. Kas has a horrible memmory and a storg, but tender attitude. I think Gordon Korman did a great job on this series, but this book got me. I would strongly recommend this book.

Great writer of "series" books
By Janice White
I bought this and several other Gordon Korman books for my 11 year-old son. He devours everything Korman writes. Anything that will capture a boy's interest and make him "beg" to read is okay with me, and Korman seems to have the formula to keep kids this age riveted to the end!

FROM THE AUTHOR OF IN A DARK, DARK WOOD

Featured in TheSkimm

An Entertainment Weekly “Summer Must List” Pick

A New York Post “Summer Must-Read” Pick

Included in Summer Book Guides from Bustle, Oprah.com, PureWow, and USA TODAY

From New York Times bestselling author of the “twisty-mystery” (Vulture) novel In a Dark, Dark Wood, comes The Woman in Cabin 10, an equally suspenseful and haunting novel from Ruth Ware—this time, set at sea.

In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for—and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong…

With surprising twists, spine-tingling turns, and a setting that proves as uncomfortably claustrophobic as it is eerily beautiful, Ruth Ware offers up another taut and intense read in The Woman in Cabin 10—one that will leave even the most sure-footed reader restlessly uneasy long after the last page is turned.

Review
“A classic "paranoid woman" story with a modern twist in this tense, claustrophobic mystery...The cast of characters, their conversations, and the luxurious but confining setting all echo classic Agatha Christie; in fact, the structure of the mystery itself is an old one: a woman insists murder has occurred, everyone else says she's crazy. But Lo is no wallflower; she is a strong and determined modern heroine who refuses to doubt the evidence of her own instincts.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Ware’s follow-up to her best-selling debut, In a Dark, Dark Wood, is a gripping maritime psychological thriller that will keep readers spellbound.  The intense final chapters just might induce heart palpitations.” (Library Journal, Starred Review)

"Ruth Ware’s The Woman in Cabin 10 is an atmospheric thriller as twisty and tension-filled as her 2015 debut, In a Dark, Dark Wood... The novel’s tone is dark and claustrophobic as Lo continues her search for the woman even though someone is trying to stop her — maybe even kill her." (The Washington Post)

“A twisted and suspenseful mystery that entangles friendship, identity and memory with a possible murder…. Subtly tips its hat to authors such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers” (Metro)

“With a churning plot worthy of Agatha Christie, and fresh on the heels of her bestselling thriller In a Dark, Dark Wood, Ruth Ware twists the wire on readers’ nerves once again. “Cabin 10” just may do to cruise vacations what “Jaws” did to ocean swimming. You’ll be afraid to go out on the water.”  (StarTribune)

"This beach read thriller has sun, suspense, and goes well with SPF." (TheSkimm)

"Ware does something more than write the next Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train, even if she writes in that wheelhouse. Ware puts her own stamp on the genre... The Woman in Cabin 10

- CHAPTER 1 -

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18

The first inkling that something was wrong was waking in darkness to find the cat pawing at my face. I must have forgotten to shut the kitchen door last night. Punishment for coming home drunk.

“Go away,” I groaned. Delilah mewed and butted me with her head. I tried to bury my face in the pillow but she continued rubbing herself against my ear, and eventually I rolled over and heartlessly pushed her off the bed.

She thumped to the floor with an indignant little meep and I pulled the duvet over my head, but even through the covers I could hear her scratching at the bottom of the door, rattling it in its frame.

The door was closed.

I sat up, my heart suddenly thumping, and Delilah leaped onto my bed with a glad little chirrup, but I snatched her to my chest, stilling her movements, listening.

I might well have forgotten to shut the kitchen door, or I could even have knocked it to without closing it properly. But my bedroom door opened outward—a quirk of the weird layout of my flat. There was no way Delilah could have shut herself inside. Someone must have closed it.

I sat, frozen, holding Delilah’s warm, panting body against my chest and trying to listen.

Nothing.

And then, with a gush of relief, it occurred to me—she’d probably been hiding under my bed and I’d shut her inside with me when I came home. I didn’t remember closing my bedroom door, but I might have swung it absently shut behind me when I came in. To be honest, everything from the tube station onwards was a bit of a blur. The headache had started to set in on the journey home, and now that my panic was wearing off, I could feel it starting up again in the base of my skull. I really needed to stop drinking midweek. It had been okay in my twenties, but I just couldn’t shake off the hangovers like I used to.

Delilah began squirming uneasily in my arms, digging her claws into my forearm, and I let her go while I reached for my dressing gown and belted it around myself. Then I scooped her up, ready to sling her out into the kitchen.

But when I opened the bedroom door, there was a man standing there.

There’s no point in wondering what he looked like, because, believe me, I went over it about twenty-five times with the police. “Not even a bit of skin around his wrists?” they kept saying. No, no, and no. He had a hoodie on, and a bandanna around his nose and mouth, and everything else was in shadow. Except for his hands.

On these he was wearing latex gloves. It was that detail that scared the shit out of me. Those gloves said, “I know what I’m doing.” They said, “I’ve come prepared.” They said, “I might be after more than your money.”

We stood there for a long second, facing each other, his shining eyes locked on to mine.

About a thousand thoughts raced through my mind: Where the hell is my phone? Why did I drink so much last night? I would have heard him come in if I’d been sober. Oh Christ, I wish Judah was here.

And most of all—those gloves. Oh my God, those gloves. They were so professional. So clinical.

I didn’t speak. I didn’t move. I just stood there, my ratty dressing gown gaping, and I shook. Delilah wriggled out of my unresisting hands and shot away up the hallway to the kitchen, and I just stood there, shaking.

Please, I thought. Please don’t hurt me.

Oh God, where was my phone?

Then I saw something in the man’s hands. My handbag—my new Burberry handbag, although that detail seemed monumentally unimportant. There was only one thing that mattered about that bag. My mobile was inside.

His eyes crinkled in a way that made me think he might be smiling beneath the bandanna, and I felt the blood drain from my head and my fingers, pooling in the core of my body, ready to fight or flee, whichever it had to be.

He took a step forwards.

“No . . .” I said. I wanted it to sound like a command, but it came out like a plea—my voice small and squeaky and quavering pathetically with fear. “N—”

But I didn’t even get to finish. He slammed the bedroom door in my face, hitting my cheek.

For a long moment I stood, frozen, holding my hand to my face, speechless with the shock and pain. My fingers felt ice-cold, but there was something warm and wet on my face, and it took a moment for me to realize it was blood, that the molding on the door had cut my cheek.

I wanted to run back to bed, to shove my head under the pillows and cry and cry. But a small, ugly voice in my skull kept saying, He’s still out there. What if he comes back? What if he comes back for you?

There was a sound from out in the hall, something falling, and I felt a rush of fear that should have galvanized me but instead paralyzed me. Don’t come back. Don’t come back. I realized I was holding my breath, and I made myself exhale, long and shuddering, and then slowly, slowly, I forced my hand out towards the door.

There was another crash in the hallway outside, breaking glass, and with a rush I grabbed the knob and braced myself, my bare toes dug into the old, gappy floorboards, ready to hold the door closed as long as I could. I crouched there, against the door, hunched over with my knees to my chest, and I tried to muffle my sobs with my dressing gown while I listened to him ransacking the flat and hoped to God that Delilah had run out into the garden, out of harm’s way.

At last, after a long time, I heard the front door open and shut, and I sat there, crying into my knees and unable to believe he’d really gone. That he wasn’t coming back to hurt me. My hands felt numb and painfully stiff, but I didn’t dare let go of the handle.

I saw again those strong hands in the pale latex gloves.

I don’t know what would have happened next. Maybe I would have stayed there all night, unable to move. But then I heard Delilah outside, mewing and scratching at the other side of the door.

“Delilah,” I said hoarsely. My voice was trembling so much I hardly sounded like myself. “Oh, Delilah.”

Through the door I heard her purr, the familiar, deep, chainsaw rasp, and it was like a spell had been broken.

I let my cramped fingers loosen from the doorknob, flexing them painfully, and then stood up, trying to steady my trembling legs, and turned the door handle.

It turned. In fact it turned too easily, twisting without resistance under my hand, without moving the latch an inch. He’d removed the spindle from the other side.

Fuck.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

I was trapped.

Imagine you have a friend...
By Basketball_Jones
Your friend-- let’s call her Debbie Downer-- is a claustrophobic, alcoholic, neurotic insomniac. She’s also a total screwup at her job, and honestly, not very bright. Her house was just broken into so you’re trying to cut her a break, but her nonstop complaining— it’s too hot, it’s too cold, the ceilings are too low, the room’s too small, my clothes smell, I’m too sleepy, I’m too hungry, I’m not hungry, I’m hungover, etc.— is getting to you. Plus there’s the counting to herself (One, Two, Three…!) and the constant, random weeping. She’s a hot mess.

Would you want to spend a lot of time hanging around her? Well, if you can stand to spend 352 pages with her, then you’ll love Lo Blacklock, the protagonist of this book.

I won’t go into a plot synopsis, others have done that already. I managed to solve the “mystery” 66% into the book (I’m on a Kindle), so kudos to the author for making the plot two-thirds difficult. As a reader it’s no fun being more clever than the protagonist. The only mystery to me was how the author was going to fill the other 33% of the book.

Some weird things in this book:

-In an early chapter, which I can only guess is used as a plot device by the author to introduce the boyfriend, Lo has a nonsensical argument with him on par with:

"You did it”
“No you did it”
“No you”
“No you”
“I love you”

and breaks up with him. I sat there thinking “What the hell did I just read?”

- At another point, during the cruise Lo locks herself in her cabin and spends a number of chapters trying to figure out how to get out. Ok, I made that up, but if it had happened, it wouldn’t have been out of place.

- Throughout, there was an absolute lack of modern communication on the luxury cruise Lo was on. No phone, no internet, like it’s a pirate ship from 1633. I’m no expert on Wifi at sea, but come on. The Bushmen in the Kalahari have iPhones at this point. It felt like a ruse to support the plot.

- And finally, the casual, illogical, loss of the evidence. It’s like Hercule Poirot saying, “Hey, I think I’ll leave the murder weapon right here, in this house full of suspects. Yeah, it’ll be here tomorrow when I come back for it. Not. worried. at. all.”

I know I’m being really hard on the author, but that’s because the critics’ reviews heightened my expectations by making the book out to be on par with The Usual Suspects, in terms of plot twists. It’s not. And that’s not the author’s fault. The book is a straight up mildly entertaining mystery, and not badly written, but there’s not a lot here to hang your hat on.

Boring, whining, drunk heroine should have been killed in the story to end the readers misery.
By George
I should have read the reviews. How did this book get on the best sellers list? Is every heroine from the UK a drunken, whining, "unreliable" witness? The author even goes so far to tell us numerous times that her heroine is a drunken unreliable witness as if we couldn't figure this out by ourselves. There are so many things wrong with this book, and yet to my own frustration it becomes a best seller. Are we as readers so numb to bad writing that we accept the rave reviews by the publisher?

The protagonist whines, drinks heavy, and mixes it with anti-depressents. She is a confused woman; one moment she is in love and the next she is breaking up. She repeats herself often, giving the reader no credit and a headache. She repeats herself...oh, I already said that. She curses for drama. The F bomb is used often as a one word sentence. She breathes and proves to us that she can count, one...two...three...breathe.

The entire first portion of the book is long and drawn out about how she really doesn't deserve being on a cruise to write a review. She's right, Lo doesn't deserve to be on this ship. She is a complete idiot. Most of her vocabulary is "Um...I...uh..." This is not the type of story that gets my heart pounding.

Once we ride over the hump of someone being murdered, the story DOES become somewhat readable. I remember thinking, here we go! But the story never produces anything more than a snore. For the remainder of the book we are led to believe that anyone on the cruise could have murdered someone that we don't even know other than the woman in cabin 10.The characters are flat. Each one of the characters kind of mesh together as the same. There is no emotional attachment to any of them. There is little show and all tell. Lo explains throughout the book who did what and why, but we as a reader are never really shown the characters because they are too busy getting a massage or taking a tour of the bridge. On a small boat, there is little to no interaction with any of the passengers. The little interaction we have is down below with the crew when Lo checks to see if she can recognize any of them as the woman in cabin 10. Of course, none of these people actually have anything to do with the murder and are a waste of time for the reader. It could have been shortened and replaced with the characters we never really know that are supposed to be so integral to the story.

Once we are told who the murderer is, the story goes as flat as the thin paper that its written on. In fact, a terrible part of the book is that we never actually have any type of dialogue or interaction with the murderer. NONE!

***SPOILER ALERT***

The opening of the book starts with a break-in to the apartment of Lo. She is a clumsy person and the attacker slams the door into her face: another example of why I ask if every protagonist from the UK has to be a drunken idiot. She walks around for the remainder of the book with a bruise on her face reminding us as readers that we are fools for giving a book like this anything above 2 stars. This part of the book did intrigue me however and I could see why people picked up the book with interest wondering who and why the attacker broke into Lo's apartment. But that part never materializes. The break-in to Lo's apartment has absolutely nothing to do with the book, other than giving her the anxiety that we have beaten into our heads of being attacked.

The other issue is that we never have any real interaction with the murderer, Richard. It could have been a much better book if we actually had a thriller with Richard chasing Lo maybe with a knife and beating the hell out of her. Wouldn't that be exciting? Instead we are told how she feels bad for the woman in cabin 10 who locked her up in a cell for countless boring chapters of all the same. We never have any, and I repeat, any real interaction with Richard other than the hot tub and a brief encounter while Lo is drunk. There I go again. Lo was drunk. The only information we are told about Richard is that he is like Richard Branson; funny how the author didn't even change the first name obviously referencing the famous billionaire in real life. We are later told how dangerous he is, though we never see any of that. It could have been more interesting if Richard had planned the break-in to Lo's apartment in the beginning. That was my guess. It would have been more sinister. Richard the conniving bastard had the entire murder planned and broke into Lo's apartment to set her up as the murderer. But alas, the break-in meant absolutely nothing and we never really meet Richard other than a couple of brief encounters because he is too busy running his large corporate world.

I have always felt the opening line of a book should give us a hint to what a story is about.

"The first inking that something was wrong was waking in the darkness to find the cat pawing at my face. I must have forgotten to shut the kitchen door last night. Punishment for coming home drunk."

This has to be one of the least driving opening statements in a book, but it is telling. She tells us she is drunk. She uses the word was twice in the opening sentence.

I give her one star for being published. Hey, she made it as a published author and a best seller. Thats better than I can say, but I'm still giving it a bad review because she put me through the torture of forcing myself to read such a boring book. Will someone please tell me there are agents and publishers out there who really enjoy a good book and not the same old crap they keep publishing about a drunken unreliable witness? I'm tired of it and you as a reader should be too.

Weak weak weak
By Lisa
Great premise but I could see the cracks early with the main character. She was weak, insecure, angry and not able to even stay awake most of the time during her ordeal that followed (seriously, do not take a shot every time the word sleep shows up in this novel - you will die of alcohol poisoning). I get so let down when authors want you to believe in characters like this. It's like those old movies where you scream: "Don't look in the basement!" She was unbelievably naive in every situation so the thriller effect was totally lost on me. I'd like my money back ;)
