It's typical of Colin Crouch to produce such an original work. Most authors would head for the safe shores of the feel-good factor in the run-up to a title match and overemphasise the positive, but Crouch presents a fascinating study of a remarkable player, warts and all.

Crouch is one of my favorite modern-day writers. He is diligent, comprehensive, and on point. He provides plenty of background with regard to the circumstances in which a game was played, the tournament situation, and any psychological factors that may have played a part. Crouch draws the reader, as much as any outside observer probably can, into what is going on in the minds of the players, and provides a clear explanation of what is happening over-the-board.

Please write a book as advertised!

On the back cover this book states there is in depth analysis of Carlsen's games. No there is not!! The discussion Crouch talks about Carlsen's chess is interesting but it most certainly is not in depth either. He really short shrifts us in this book! If you want excellent analysis of the games that Crouch presents, London 2012 and Wik aan Zee 2013 plus several losses before these tournaments, go to ICC, the internet chess club, and click on their video coverage which is done in great depth. In one of the losses, to Anand, he wraps up commentary at move 34 while Carlsen battled on to move 76. He makes other comments like,"Black has to do something with his pawns, otherwise the White Knights are going to gallop through",page 16 on the McShane-Carlsen game. This is just plain awful commentary. It is so bad it is not even superficial. Maybe players who are new to the game will like this book but if you are rated over 1200USCF, save your money.

Entertaining and instructive

I like the verbose explanations. The variational analysis is sparing and only to corroborate and lend substance to the verbal explanations.There's real insight in the notes and Crouch has thought long and hard about the games he's analysed. He's also a master of prose -- the book is a riveting read. So many chess books these days are just glorified engine analyses thinly camouflaged with some spare and clumsy words. Not Crouch's books.

The heart of the book -- over two hundred pages -- examines Carlsen's games in just two tournaments (London Chess Classic 2012, and Wijk Aan Zee 2013), played over a two-month period, when Carlsen decisively broke free from the rest of the pack of leading players.

A titled player might be able to pick holes in the analysis but I'm merely an average-to-strong club player and the style and depth of Crouch's analysis suits me just fine. If it's an engine dump of variations you want, stay away from this book. If you want a clean and compelling prose style with genuine insight into positions and games, buy the book.

A Good Look at Carlsen's style before the Championship match.

Actually, I rather liked this book as I do much of Crouch's writings. Quite apart from the hype on the back of the book, the book was written mainly to show Carlsen's games from the two tournaments that lead to Carlsen's topping of Kasparov's rating record and these games are fairly well annotated, for instance, notes to Carlsen-Harikrisna take up 16 pages!

I suppose, if anything, Crouch could cut back on some of the verbal explanation and include a bit more in variations. As a prelude to those two tournaments, Crouch analyzes Carlsen's loses from 2010 thru 2012 preceding the London Classic of 2012. His loss to Anand does lack annotations after move 34, but the moves pretty well speak for themselves. What Crouch does is to give the critical moments in the games along with alternatives and makes some astute observations about Carlsen's style in the openings and his approach to the game.

Unfortunately, the book doesn't include any of the losses Carlsen suffered after Wijk aan Zee 2013, most notably losing 2 of the last three games in the FIDE Candidates and only edging Kramnik in tie-break points.. Then he lost a game to Wang Hao in the Norway Masters finishing second to Karjakin and then to Caruana in the Tal Memorial to Caruana while finishing second to Gelfand. Some of these losses, no doubt could not make it into the book due to space and time considerations.

This book, however, is a fine prelude to the upcoming match between Carlsen and Anand for the World Champion title. Too bad we don't have a similar book on Anand.

Faced with ill health, poverty, and marital servitude on the one hand, and opportunities for financial independence, dignity, and self-worth on the other, Kitty Warren follows her sister into a successful career in prostitution. Shaw’s fierce social criticism in this play is driven not by conventional morality, but by anger at the hypocrisy that allows society to condemn prostitution while condoning the discrimination against women that makes prostitution inevitable.

A Savage Social Satire of Economics and Hypocrisy

Although it was written in the late 1800s, censorship issues kept George Bernard Shaw's MRS. WARREN'S PROFESSION off the stage for close to a decade, and it did not debut publically on the London stage until about 1900. Even after this delay, moralists denounced it as a scandalous play--and it remained controversial well into the mid-20th Century.

The basic story concerns a pragmatic young woman, Vivie, who has spent her life in boarding schools, seeing her mother only on rare occasions. Upon graduation, she now directly confronts her mother and learns the bitter truth: Mrs. Warren is a former prostitute who has risen to the rank of a high class madam, and all of Vivie's education has been built on the profits of her profession. But the play takes an unexpected twist, for instead of sensationalizing or sentimentalizing prostitution, Shaw gives us Mrs. Warren as a business woman who took the only opportunity available to her and through commonsense and a strong work ethic parlayed her meager beginnings into a fortune of note.

The obvious reason for public outcry against the play was Shaw's refusal to condemn Mrs. Warren for prostitution; less obvious but more powerful is the fact that Shaw condemns virtually every character and the society in which they move as grossly hypocritical. It is an incredibly hypocritical society that has forced Mrs. Warren to decide between the virtue of starvation and the sin of success; while easily the most sympathetic role in the play, Mrs. Warren emerges as a garden-variety hypocrite of limited insight; and while we may admire Vivie for her clarity of thought and apparent virtue, she emerges as a young woman of such ferocious self-determination that she is ultimately difficult to like.

MRS. WARREN'S PROFESSION was among Shaw's earliest plays, and it pales a bit in comparison to his later, more theatrically sophistocated works; consequently it is seldom revived today. Even so, it is a powerful example of the new style Shaw would forge in theatre, a dark comedy overflowing with complex ideas and wickedly funny ironies. Shaw's tone of voice is both distinct and unique, he reads from the page as well as he plays on the stage, and he would exert a profound influence on drama throughout the 20th Century. Recommended.

You can't help but root for Vivie!

In this wonderful play Shaw brilliantly takes on a forbidden subject that got him into trouble back in his day but that's now praised as an excellent and insightful masterpiece. I must agree that it is truly excellent even though the subject it takes on is a very uncomfortable one even now.

You can't help but root for Vivie as she cleverly deals with the hypocritical rogues around her in this hilarious tale.

This story was smart and funny. I loved it and wanted more when it was over. I'll have to buy another one of his books. I just love his style.

I can't resist any chance I can get to peek into the mind of a genius, and Shaw was a true genius. This story was delightful and brilliant.

A Hilarious, Shocking, and Brilliant Book!

This was excellent. Shaw has given us yet another strong and intelligent female character in a brilliantly humorous tale that exposes the seedy underbelly of prim and proper Victorian society. It's a powerful indictment of Victorian era society, which exposes its corruption and hypocrisy. Even today the subject matter of this story is shocking, so I can certainly see why it would have caused such a ruckus back then.

As is always the case with Shaw's works, the characters are very well fleshed out and mirror people you know in real life. The circumstances are wildly, laugh-out-loud entertaining, the plot is beautifully ironic, and the message is as serious as a heart attack. In this work he doesn't pull a single punch.

Shaw is my favorite of the Victorian playwrights. His works were revolutionary in many ways. Use of humor was rare and exceptional for playwrights during that era, but Shaw was not afraid to make audiences laugh. He also tackled serious moral, political, and social issues in his plays at a time when sappy dramas were all the rage. He was truly bold and innovative and greatly contributed to dramatic art. He had an amazing gift, the ability to make people think while simultaneously making them laugh.

Reading Shaw's works are a genuine treat. All of his plays are fabulous. His characters are memorable, and his humor is brilliant.
This is a wonderful book, charming, significant, and insightful. I can't recommend it enough.

J.D. Horn was raised in rural Tennessee and has carried a bit of its red clay with him while traveling the world, from Hollywood to Paris to Tokyo. He studied comparative literature as an undergrad, focusing on French and Russian in particular. Really? Could we have a little more focus here?

Talk about a trilogy in desperate need of cohesiveness . . . This author seemed to have no real idea where he wanted this plot line to go, so what does he do? He goes everywhere. Someone dead that he wants alive again? No problem! What if it doesn't make sense? Doesn't matter! End the book on a sour note? Just end it again. I don't have enough words to express my disappointment and dissatisfaction. Oh, wait. Here are some: Big waste of time. I was required to give it one star in order to submit it. Fine. His words were spelled correctly.

The Void isn't as good as the first or second book in the series

The Void isn't as good as the first or second book in the series. Too much of repeated feelings and actions. I didn't realized it was the end of the complete story of Mercy because I though it was going to continue with the book of Jilo, which is the 4th book. I didn't feel for these characters as I should have by book 3.

I am hooked. Each book just gets better! I know it wasn't the ending a lot if readers wanted to see but I think it was perfect. Definitely a plot twist.

About the author: John Pasquarelli is perhaps best known to the Australian public for being Pauline Hanson’s political adviser after her election to the Federal Parliament in 1996. Pasquarelli authored Hanson’s maiden speech which has gone down in Australian political history as the most controversial and recognised maiden speech of any parliamentarian since federation. Since 1960, Pasquarelli has periodically lived and worked in Papua New Guinea and was a member of that country’s first parliament, 1964-1968. He was the first to discover the gold and copper at Frieda River in 1963 and shot crocodiles when he began his trading activities on the Sepik and Ramu Rivers. Pasquarelli is acknowledged as an expert on Oceanic Art and he collected for Nelson Rockefeller in the 1960s. He was a substantial donor to the PNG National Museum and during his time in parliament had the famous Haus Tambaran at Kanganaman on the Middle Sepik declared National Cultural Property. In recent years, Pasquarelli has become a talented artist, selling his works to prominent Australians and staging a number of public exhibitions. This is a novel that was dying to be written. Horseracing, drugs, politics, intrigues. Low life and high society. Fascinating technical details of human and animal viscera. Intimate sexual details. The dry and disconcerting humour of the central protagonist – hardened ex-New Guinea patrol officer, Jack Read.
Insurance investigations are usually run of the mill. The loss adjuster makes enquiries, submits a report and collects a fee. But when horses, their jockeys, veterinarians, strappers and trainers, bent coppers and standover men are involved, there has to be a reckoning. And middle-aged Jack Read is the man, for all his doubts and faults, to get a handle on things and in the end survive for another day.
The thrill of the race. The Straight Six at Melbourne’s Flemington Race Course is a punter’s dream. Horses sprint their hearts out, even better assisted by elephant juice. Money is won and lost depending on who is in the know, going all the way to the Victorian Police and Corrective Services Minister. Rent boys, bikies, paedophiles, bisexuals, and horny women all get their day. Jack Read, always a keen observer, is sometimes a smart operator.
The story has a promising start involving an elephant. But this is followed by a lesson on racing history, fortunately behind a prologue barrier. And so to chapters one and two – a suspected dishonest personal injury claim – introducing a few characters (and a love interest of course) and then into race horse claims in chapter three. The novel canters into an easy rhythm from about chapter four.
All is genuine real life drama. The author has a way with words. One can live in Melbourne and not really be there. We are getting everything about the city, its people, its cafes, trams (‘raising swirls of dust from the fine sand directed where its braking wheels made contact with the tracks.’) and weather. Pasquarelli the painter creates the colour, atmosphere and dialogues of Emile Zola. He has the measure of the city, its environs, people and animals, as well as Sydney, including Balmain and Manly.
I remember, when living in Melbourne, real-life elephant juice scandals. I’ve had an interest in race horses. I rode one of the author’s nags – a pathetic but honest thoroughbred which sadly ended its days put down by a vet after it had ripped its fetlock in a wire fence. The Straight Six is for horse lovers, punters, and readers seeking a human and humane streak of honesty delivered in plain language with insightful repartee, an intriguing plot and a touch of class.
This is a truly filmic novel with great potential for a mainstream publisher to make a killing.
