Amazingly detailed and abundant information and a must for the novice (or even the seasoned) traveler

We plan to visit Italy in 2016 or 2017 and are doing our homework now and researching where to stay and the distances to drive to visit neighboring areas as well. My wife and I are into fine food and gourmet cooking, history, the people, the culture..nd so much more.. I'm a photographer of many years and always bring my gear when we travel as well.
We've seen similar guide/travel books at our local libraries...some not current as this is for 2016, but, never have we seen a guide like this that details every aspect of interest for travelers who have a wide variety of interests to include in their trip.
This book at 1000+ pages is fascinating and extremely informative. It covers every aspects of what one will probably want to see and do in Italy. I'm still bookmarking many pages with paper strips as I read on.
I covers so many lesser known villages and locations that are not always well known (nor publicized as much) to the novice traveler such as my wife and I.
This guide is allowing us to carefully plan a trip and choose where to stay so to allow allow us to venture around in a rental from a central point we'll be staying and we'll do day trips within a given radius each day. With this guide and Google/Apple maps and other on-line resources to use for distance/routing, etc,.. we will be able to arrive at a well thought out plan for our travel. That along with putting in locations into our GPS prior to leaving on our journey using a newly purchased current Europe map, will allow us to really do a decent job getting fully prepared.
(To note, a new map of Italy is included in the back of this travel guide as well.)
This wonderful guide includes must-see attractions, Hotels (we also are using Expedia, and other travel web sites here), best places to eat, art, historical areas and places to see, and tips to save money where you can, amongst other great things included in it.
Illustrations are ample as are photographs, not every page, but they are there where needed for sure.
The text quality is also good even for older, weaker eyes. The paper is a low luster, low reflective surface and slightly off-white in color and I found it easy to read the text without any eyestrain, even during extended reading for over an hour. Considering you'll be spending many hours using this guide, that makes a big difference.
5 stars for sure. We've been to bookstores and the 7 or so local libraries and I've got to say, if I have one guide to use for this upcoming trip and to take with me, This Fodor's 2016 Travel guide is a winner over all we've seen so far and will most definitely be our primary guidebook.

Great travel planner for a trip to Italy

This is a well written and informative travel guide from Fodors. With 992 pages, this book is rather thick and heavy, but compact enough to stow in your backpack for trip planning and quick reference. It is printed in full color on quality paper with simple, clear maps that are easy to read and to locate various landmarks and places of interest.
I particularly like the indexing system on the side of the book. There are 16 major cities or regions of Italy that the book covers, and they are indexed on the side of the book so that you can quickly flip to the right section. Each city or region is covered in great details, with an overwhelming list of tourist hotspots and interesting places to explore. Possibly one of the most comprehensive travel guides to Italy that I have the pleasure of reading. Besides exploring, there are tips and notes on the top reasons to go there, getting around, and lists of places to eat and to sleep. There are hiking guidance in certain areas including Cinque Terre. As a bonus, a sturdy fold-out map of Rome is attached at the back cover of the book. The level of details in the map is great and I could see it being extremely useful when on the go in Rome.
All in all, this is a comprehensive and well-written travel guide to Italy. It covers more places that one would be ready to explore. This book is extremely useful when you are planning for a trip, trying to sample and select a few cities or regions you may want to visit. There are tons of information on each city or region on its own. Nevertheless, once you have narrowed down to the places, you'll still want to find the travel guides specific to those places so that you have a more complete picture of what they have to offer. For a general travel planner for Italy, this is solid book worth reading.

Really Good Planning Guide for All of Italy

This is a really good guide for planning and dreaming at home. If you want to take along specific pages (restaurants, maps, tourist sites, etc.), I recommend you get an X-Acto knife & cut the book up & take those pages with you. You really do not need the hotel info if you've made reservations, etc. This is an 992-page book - too big IMO to take it all with you unless you are going to every part of Italy.
If you are a return visitor or first-time, the "Italy Today" section gives a general overview of atmosphere & what's hot in Italy. I also like the "Eating & Drinking Well in….." each part of Italy - the book highlights the food & drink the area is known for.
The section on Rome is very good. I like how it is organized & the "What's Where" pages that show the all the top sights (& more) with advice for how to avoid the biggest crowds (there are always crowds no matter the season). The section on the Sistine Chapel is especially good & includes color photos with descriptions of each section.
There is information on side trips outside/near Rome. The dining section gives restaurant options & the pull-out Rome map has restaurants marked with orange squares.
Each part of Italy has the top attractions, a simple map, how to get around, approximate cost, etc. The top sights for each section of the country is well done.
The guide goes on to give advice on etiquette, what to pack, how restaurants work, general information on Italy and overview of the country.
There is a section on Italian vocabulary basics which should get you through. My advice is to at least learn basic words (& use them!) like: please, thank you, pardon, hello, goodbye - you will be amazed at how much more friendly people are if you are courteous & learn a few easy phrases/words.
The maps are OK - good for planning. There is a pull-out Rome map and a Metro/Bus map. I always use the much more detailed & laminated "Streetwise Rome" map and buy Michelin maps (if I am driving) for the specific areas when I get to Italy.
This is a lovely book & well-organized with good information. It's real value is whetting your appetite with the photos & helping you whittle down your itinerary - decide what you want to spend your precious time/money, doing/seeing.
