About the Author

Michio Kushi came to the United States shortly after World War II upon completing studies at Tokyo University. Since then, he has lectured on macrobiotics; the meeting of East and West; traditional Asian medicine, philosphy, and culture; and the realization of world peace and planetary harmony. has useful information for understanding your own health

I don't know if everything in this book is true, or not, but a goodly portion of it seems to be, based on my own experience. This book instructs the reader in how to examine the external condition of their body in order to determine what is going on internally. As an example, I've found its claims about chapped lips to be true, in that lip-chapping generally seems to indicate a digestive problem. And I've found that when I clear up the digestive issue, the lips stop chapping. So I've learned to watch that very carefully.

This is a fantastic book. It contains useful diagrams and drawings to help the practitioner visualize what the body looks like and the conceptualize what needs to be done to create harmony within the body cavity.

About the Author
Frederick Harris is an artist who has lived in Japan for over fifty years. Raised in New York City, he attended a special high school for students talented in art and music before pursuing further art education at various colleges in the US. At the Art Students League he was introduced to the Japanese woodblock print by the well-known printmaker Martin Lewis. After serving in the armed forces in Korea, he moved to Japan to establish an art studio. He currently resides in Tokyo with his Japanese wife.

Beautiful Pictures

I got this book for its beautiful reproductions of Japanese prints, and was not disappointed. It does contain some explicit prints, if that is going to bother you, but they are a part of the history of this art form.

I like the organization and approach

I've several books on Ukiyo-e, but like this one due to its thematic development, and the broad range of topics, including the later ukiyo-e with foreigners! Even though I've read several books on ukiyo-e by different masters and on different topics, I found this much more informative, and now understand several repeated characters, themes, and symbols much better than I did before.

I own many books on Japanese Wood Block Prints but this is one of the best. It not only has great color prints but with each of them the author's analysis of that print which often includes a broader historical perspective. He does it in a format that is not overwhelming and manageable for those of us that are not scholars but just have a passion for the prints.

The first eBook that I ever read was John Simpson’s Condor One. This would hook me into the mm romance genre. I have followed the series over the last several years and have enjoyed it very much. Now, the series comes to an end as Mr. Simpson has published Condor and the Shifting Sands.

David Windsor, the former President of the United States and current US Ambassador to the Court of St. James (in other words, US Ambassador to the United Kingdom), where his cousin King William sits on the throne. He receives a call from the Duke of Somerset, also know as Darren Wilson the son of the current US President. He tells his David that his mother would like him to call him as soon as possible. Knowing something must be wrong if the President was not using official channels to contact him, David places the call.

President Victoria Wilson asks David and his husband Shane Thompson-Windsor to stop by Washington on the pretense of visiting Shane’s ailing father. However, she has other plans for the men. There are two world problems that are growing quickly and there are no other options than to send David and Shane to try to diffuse the situations. It appears that ISIS is about to take over and destroy a key dam in Iraq that if destroyed will flood a lot of the country. Also, Vladimir Putin is doing some sabre rattling around the border of Ukraine. She would like the pair to fly over there to find solutions to both problems without starting World War III. It is up to David to find diplomatic solutions while Shane once again protects his backside and gives his own unique opinion of the situation.

Shifting Sands is a good send off for the series but there was something missing from it to make it an excellent one. First, readers are used to books in the series being about twice as long as this one and the story felt a bit rushed. While most of the supporting characters make an appearance in the book, I felt that they should have been featured more during this book, especially their son Jack. But Sands does give you the romance and action from David and Shane that you have come to expect from this series.

The cover art by Maria Fanning has been consistent throughout the series. The same models for David and Shane have been featured on most of the covers. This cover has the pair standing in front of a window presumably at Winfield House. Above this, a picture of a swirling sand dune take the to third of the cover. It is a solid cover for the book.

The Condor One series started with David Windsor running for election for President while being guarded by Secret Service Agent Shane Thompson and their budding romance. The first three books deal with the election and David’s term as president and being the first openly gay president. Then next four books deal with the time immediately after David’s presidency and building a family with Shane and their adopted son Jack.

In the series, Mr. Simpson tackled marriage equality, the war in Iraq, the military industrial complex, don’t ask-don’t tell, energy policy, radical Islam, sleeper cells, Al Qaeda, ISIS, Ukraine, homelessness, gay teens and more. Mr. Simpson has tried to keep the series relevant but real life current events can sometimes get in the way of that. (Osama bin Laden and Muammar Gaddafi were still alive in his books after both were killed due to the lag in publication.) The only small quibble I had with the series is some continuity issues through the books. It seemed that the ages of Brandon Wilson and Jack Thompson-Windsor seem to bounce around. Also, David and Shane were first going to retire to Palm Springs but wound up in New Jersey. But these do not take away in the enjoyment of the series. Here is hoping that David and Shane have a fulfilling retirement away from their political stage.

Riveting series!

I just finished reading the entire seven book series and it was absolutely riveting. All the characters were fascinating and the various plots were intriguing and fast paced. I had a hard time putting a book down in order to catch some much needed sleep!
The protocol and security measures needed to accomplish the many varied goals of the U.S. in any endeavor is mind boggling. The stress these men and women must live with on a day-to-day basis is unimaginable to the average citizen. We must, as a nation, give thanks to everyone who is in the government's employ. Without these selfless individuals our nation wouldn't be the great nation that it is. And we must not forget the brave men and women who serve in our military. Without them we would not be the America that we enjoy through their sacrifice and commitment to honor and country.
This is a wonderful series I highly recommend. Kudos, John Simpson.

I have missed David and Shane

Wouldn't the world be a better place if we truly had diplomats like David. It would be fantastic if we could handle ISIS or Putin like this, but we can't. What saddens me is how little most people know about he situation the Ukraine, Russia's, Iraq or Syria. People know more about the Kardashians than what truly matters. Mr. Simpson keep up the great and wonderful work you do balancing entertainment and world facts.

A comprehensive look at women and the Holocaust

I thought I was knowledgeable about the Holocaust, but after reading Birth, Sex and Abuse, I realize that I only knew part of the story. Dr. Beverley Chalmers has greatly expanded my knowledge of the Holocaust with her meticulously researched book that's not just about dry facts and numbers, but includes enough testimony from survivors and eyewitnesses to paint the full picture of Nazi brutality. Of course, men as well as women suffered under the Nazis' persecution, first in Germany and later in the occupied countries, but the book focuses on women. The book is one of the most scholarly accounts that I've read about the Holocaust. It's clearly the result of a tremendous amount of research, made even more difficult by the fact that many of the referenced documents were in German or other European languages.

The book traces the progression of Nazi racial ideology and treatment of those who did not meet the Nazis' standards of racial purity from simple denigration of Jews and others deemed to be undesirable to mass murder in the concentration camps. One factor that distinguished the "Final Solution" from other historical instances of genocide was the involvement and cooperation of the medical profession in its pursuit, a phenomenon that blackened the image of German doctors for decades after the war.

The book is not always easy to read, and I don't mean because it's poorly written. It's just that many passages, including interviews with survivors and witnesses to actual events, were extremely disturbing to read. I thought after seeing so many films about the Holocaust and reading many books that I was conditioned to the horror of it all, but the author writes of horrors almost beyond belief.

The author addresses the "How could this happen?" question in the Epilogue, noting that many individuals, including the SS, had moments of kindness toward their victims. She mentions that sexuality has been suggested as a possible explanation for how some Germans were able to alternate indescribable cruelty with normal behavior. One theory is that women's maintenance of a comfortable domestic life enabled men to commit atrocities. At home with their families, men could relax from their horrific roles and reassure themselves that they were good, decent human beings.

The book's appendix includes a detailed timeline of Holocaust-related events from prior to 1933 to 1948; a comprehensive bibliography; and the footnotes.

It's good to see a new scholarly work that adds to our knowledge of the Holocaust and the Nazis' treatment of Jews and others who the Nazis believed to be inferior beings.

Truthful, and hard to take

It's not like I really "loved" the book. It was tough stuff to read about. However, I love that Ms Chalmers wrote it. The day is soon coming that no one will remember or believe that the Holocaust really happened. People often denied it then, too. To think that one human can treat other humans like animals is just hard to believe, even though we still see evidence that it happens. This account of the treatment of women should wake us up to the atrocities of Germany, those all over the world, and in our own country. A good account of history should help us from repeating it.

All the things you never learned about the Holocaust from both a female and a male perspective, including unimagined degradation at the hands of the Nazis and other people in power during a time of extreme hardship and danger for anyone who didn't fit the Aryan stereotype. Highly recommend.

A Great Little Horror Anthology

Non-themed horror anthologies that don't have some variation of "year's best" in front of their title are a rare thing nowadays, so when Brian James Freeman posted that he and Richard Chizmar were editing one and looking for folks to write honest reviews, I jumped at the opportunity. Not surprisingly, these two have put together one hell of a book.

The first story is "Weeds" by Stephen King, the first time it's been back in print since the '70s (I know this to be true, yet I feel I've read it before; most likely I'm just intimately familiar with it due to the film anthology Creepshow, which I've seen dozens of times). Jordy Verrill, a farmer in New Hampshire, witnesses a meteorite fall to earth on the 4th of July. In a rare stroke of brilliance, he decides to go collect the rock to sell to a local university, assuming it will be worth quite a bit of money. Unfortunately for Jordy, the meteorite was more than just a chunk of rock from space, and what came to Earth with it spells his doom (and possibly the doom of everything on the planet). This story is classic King. There's a lighthearted goofiness to the whole thing that masks a much darker and more horrific heart. It's good to see this one back in print.

Kelley Armstrong's "The Price You Pay" is a horror story that is completely grounded in the real world; it's the kind of story you just might hear about on the news one night. Kara and Ingrid have been friends since childhood, and Ingrid has always looked out for Kara, protecting her from threats, both real and perceived. Ingrid took that protection too far, though, and both girls paid a price for it. Now Ingrid has reappeared in Kara's life, and with her comes a new threat to both women. There was nothing too surprising in this story; you can see most every turn coming, with the possible exception of the final reveal. It is, however, an expertly-written story that will keep you glued to the page until the very end.

"Magic Eyes" by Bill Pronzini tells the story of a man that has been institutionalized for murdering his wife. The protagonist maintains that he is perfectly sane and that he had to kill his wife because she had been taken over by some hostile force. I don't want to say too much more for fear of spoiling the story. Suffice it to say that he story is a lot of fun and kept me guessing all the way through.

Simon Clark's "Murder in Chains" is my favorite story in the anthology. It's a pretty outlandish tale of a guy that wakes up with a collar around his neck. This collar is attached to a chain, and at the other end is another collar around the neck of a large man with apparently limited intelligence but endless rage and a capacity for extreme violence. There's no real setup for this situation, and the ending, while satisfying, doesn't really explain why anything happened. I honestly hope that Clark one day expands on this story, either in novel form or, at the very least, with another short story. There are just so many questions left to answer!

The final story is "The Watched" by Ramsey Campbell. I know the man is a veritable institution in the horror genre, but his stories have, for the most part, never done anything for me. He just seems to get bogged down in extraneous detail and I get bored waiting for the meat of the story. That said, this short story is quite good and I very much enjoyed it. It's the story of a teen in a rough neighborhood and how a local constable recruits to him to help keep tabs on a family of suspected drug dealers. There were a number of times Campbell could have gone off on long tangents, but he reigned himself in and kept focused, and the result is a great little story that gets to the point in a reasonable amount of time, with a payoff that makes reading it worthwhile.

This is a terrific start to a horror anthology series. Freeman and Chizmar definitely have their hand on the genre's pulse and know a good story when they read it. I will be eagerly awaiting the next volume(s).

Story: Weeds

Review: this is an older story as I’d figure most would agree. I enjoyed reading it in this fashion and liked the fact that it was the first story in the lineup. It’s a good choice of short stories as well in that it ends having the darker forces win out over good thus answering to the title of “Dark Screams”.
Story: The Price You Pay
Author: Kelley Armstrong
Review: I’ve never read anything from Ms. Armstrong and I enjoyed this tale. It held me captive until the end and I never suspected the outcome nor saw through it to discover the real evil one here. It hits the heart for those that have been or seen this sort of abuse and here, the winner was true and just. Excellent follow up to the first story.

Review: I seem to enjoy the insane asylum type of story. I recently read Cherry Hill and it involved such a place. While the story built upon a given evil, the eyes, it sort of died at the end. Well not died but didn’t end in such a way I thought was enjoyable. I know that sounds harsh, I’m trying not to put it that way. I really enjoyed the diary style of writing. That is a favorite style of mine. Just something of the ending got me. Still I like Mr. Pronzini’s overall story. Thank you for sharing.

Review: I have to write here, even before I finished the story. The first few paragraphs were awesome. You could feel their fear and terror as they were dragged along in their underground cell. I must read on… excellent content and should be reviewed very well.

Well worth the price and gives you some great stories.

DARK SCREAMS, VOLUME ONE delivers four fantastic new stories and one classic 'hard to find gem',all for less than the price of a cup of coffee!!! This is the first volume in a planned series from some of the best in the horror business. The price alone should get this volume 5 stars.
Brian James Freeman and Richard Chizmar, of Cemetery Dance Publications give you some real gems in this volume from story tellers that express their craft differently to each other. This way you get a flavour of what each is capable of, and that flavour is dark and menacing.
Weeds kicks of the series and see Mr King at his best. A delightful story that sees a meteor crash and the consequences that prevail.
The Price You Pay By Kelly Armstrong is a solid story about a friendship that turns sour. Loved this one and this story would probably prompt a reader to look out for more from Kelly. In fact I bough her book Omens on the strength of this story!!
Bill Pronzini's contribution is Magic Eyes which really hits the nail on the head. He carves out a story of insanity in an imaginative, uncompromising style.
Murder in Chains is a Simon Clark unnerving tale that keeps you guessing until the end.
Ramsey Campbell, whom I'm more familiar with, hits you with The Watched. Another brilliant short form Ramsey that really gives this anthology the goose bumps. A young boy and a nasty 'associate' that he could have done without.

This book tells the fascinating story of Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and the Darling children and their adventures in Never-Never-Never Land. They fight with pirates and enjoy their freedom. Some of the original illustrations by Alice B. Woodward are included here as well as modern plates. A nice book especially for young readers

I would give this no stars if I could. It was listed as 'unabridged' which must be some sort of mistake bkz it was more abridged than the chapter book I had borrowed from the library for my five-year-old… We read it four times and he was ready for the unabridged but this is definitely not it!

I doubt you have a choice if it is for class...

I am about half way through reading this book for a course I'm taking. It is pretty good but, if you're like me, you'll definitely need to look up terms that are not explained. The glossary in the book is not super extensive, at 5 1/2 pages. The tone of the writing is also inconsistent: it ranges from chatty to highly technical.

The book itself seems very cheaply made ... the (paperback) cover and pages are so thin that it flops around and bends quite easily, and if you highlight in it, your marks may show through to the other side of the page. Interior is black and white (not that it really needs color).

THE READER FRIENDLY BOOK I HAVE EVER SEEN

there may be a hundred books that teach acoustic analysis of speech, however this book will make the reader smile all along as he/she reads. The explanations are clear, and easily digested by the reader. It gives a feeling that kent and read are beside you and explainging things out and thats what a student expects from a book.

It's not likely you're buying this book to read for pleasure, neither did I.

I find the subject matter interesting, but the presentation is terrible. Required reading for my Acoustics class, I found this book extremely dry - one of the more frustrating aspects though, is the way the book is organized. It seems that the editors haven't spent any time worrying about the readability of this book (for whatever reason.) The author refers to tables that are pages before and after text, leaving the reader constantly flipping back and forth in a chapter to refer to diagrams.

Great Book

This was a great book to learn from. Pretty simple and to the point to what the author was trying to tell the reader. Not like some books with so much wording to get the point across when they can say it in short and simple words like this book. Would recommend for anybody to learn about the healthcare field.
