A Great Teacher!

Love Carolyn Myss and already read the book and had the cassettes. Was just upgrading to CDs. Highly recommend anything by Carolyn Myss. She is a great teacher and changed my life when I first listened to her tapes of "Why people don't heal and how they can".

Back to the Land

I love narratives of people's experiences. Those are probably my very favorite types of books. We know and love John Seymour from later books based more on skills, how to, but this is his narrative, of his life with his family in England in the 1950s. Yeah, so he divorced and later moved to Ireland (hey, I'd rather live in Ireland too). This is still a beautiful and inspirational book. But perhaps it takes a strange person like me to get excited reading about how a man grew turnips then pastured his hogs on them, and how they then canned the meat and how delicious it was. Re-thatching his house was also very interesting, and a prescient comment on the state of real skills today. Hmmm, I think I'll go read it again.

The topics and themes in this book are quite common ideals these days, but when this book was written, John Seymour was an iconoclastic idealist. He bucked the trend of wanting everything new, easy-to-use and shiny as a consumer, and he bucked the trend of mechanistic, big business farming. And he can write.

Read it if you like gardening or dream of a hobby farm, or if you regularly wear hand-knitted jumpers and bake your own bread. Leave it alone if those things leave you cold.

Urban Homesteading is the new trend, but as the hippies and Thoreau knew it has been done before. The Nearings were the new 20 century back to the landers in the US; John Seymour was their equivalent in the UK. Starting in the 50s, having previously lived on a boat, he moved into an old estate cottage in the middle of nowhere and with his potter wife began his quest to become self sufficient. Part memoir, part practical guide, the book is told with British humor and down to earthiness. It is a treasure and has converted this reader into a John Seymour fan. Seymour went on to write several other great books and to broadcast for TV and radio.

Excellent well written history of the Hawker HS125

The De Haviland/Hawker HS125/Bae125 corporate jet was manufactured for over fifty years. Far longer than any other corporate jet. During this time via a process of evolution the aircraft was constantly improved. Bill Gunston is one of the UK's leading aviation authors and his book "The story of the 125" is excellent and well researched. The book starts with a basic history of the De Haviland company and the decision to build the worlds first purpose built corporate jet. The book was written in 1996 and covers all the HS125 civil and military variants including the Bae125 Hawker 1000 as well as the Garrett731 re-engined Hawkers. The book is an easy and fascinating read with excellent quality images although most of these are black and white. I am a Hawker pilot and mechanic and have flown and worked on many models of this classic jet. I could not find any inaccuracies or errors in this book. You can always trust the Brits when it comes to aviation history!
Very few copies of this book were printed and it has become a collectors item hence the prices for used versions. However if you are really interested in the HS125 you should get a copy of this excellent work. With Raytheon deciding to cease production of the Hawker jet line in 2013 this book may well become sought after. So get one while you can!

I purchased this deck because the illustrator, Wang Yiguang has created exciting, unusual illustrations for the deck. The artist plays with perspective, his imagery is alive with movement and color. The reverse side of the cards features a striking photo of red figured satin brocade.

The text was okay, but not my cup of tea. Too flowery, repetitious, and very western. Typical of New Age reinterpretations of ancient spiritual disciplines and world religions, the warm and fuzzy text is dumbed down, focusing on happy thoughts and unconditional love for all. All this dressed up in flowery, wordy, sticky sweet sentimentality. While the artwork is skillfully executed, I suspect somebody has taken liberties with the goddess Kuan Yin and her manifestations, but hey - its only a deck of cards.

Then only detail that bothers me is that many of the cards feature women and girls from distant areas of China and indigenous minorities living far from Tibet.The deck represents itself as Tibetan, but it would be more appropriate using some other description. Finally, the color quality does seem a bit off - a bit red, and details are soft. This happens when art images are poorly scanned...the other reason is that when the cards were printed, nobody proofed them. An automatic color correction software was used, and possibly the paper stock affected the way the colors took. I'd love to see the original art, or better reproductions of it!

This oracle deck is yet another home run at least as far as I am concerned. Alana Fairchild finds a way with each deck she creates to bring the magic of healing oneself and others to life without regurgitating the same messages. 44 cards and 270 pages of delicious card descriptions which all include their very own healing process if you wish to utilize them. Card 20 Tender Trust, Beloved Body healing process for example starts off by Alana stating you can choose to do this exercise in the buff or with your clothes on depending on whats comfortable for you. Then she asks you to say a prayer that is either for yourself or another. Once that is complete you will take one hand and place it on your heart then the other and place it on another part of your body that you have problems accepting. The purpose is to send it love to say it out loud "I love you." The process goes on from there and finishes with another prayer. This card would also be good to use in combination with Reiki for those that practice it for a little power boost of feel-good-healing energy.

To me there can be nothing more empowering then the regular practice of self love and acceptance. How often are we our own self critics, body haters, while focused mostly on those things we dislike about our lives instead of focusing on our assets? The regular practice of self love and acceptance can help to open you up to lifes possibilities and to receive the good that is being offered to you from where ever that may be.

I found lots of little gems to polish and hold close to my heart with this oracle deck and would be great to share with others. Another tidbit for those that want to meditate but have problems getting in the zone give yoga nidra a try. I did a tantric yoga nidra exercise from that website where you can broadcast yourself and for me I could definitely feel the energy movement in my body and found it to be a very nice experience.

Gorgeous artwork, just amazing! However, I feel that the comments that go along with each one are a stretch as far as inspiration goes. They seem very generic to me, as if they could fit many of the paintings, too generalized and not specific enough. I almost feel as if the author saw the appeal of the paintings and hooked up with them instead of having an complete vision of her own.

Light, fluffy, contemporary

The Truth about Jack was the first great contemporary read of the year that I really enjoyed. The plot, writing, and the characters just really bring together the story.
First off the plot. I went into this book expecting a cute contemporary. I definitely got that. Jack is a boy who finds a message in a bottle from the main girl Dakota who is going through a tough time. Jack decides to lie about who he truly is to get to know Dakota. Both Jack and Dakota are characters I came to love, Jack especially. Jack is a down to Earth musician, a guy I would definitely go for. What I truly love about his character was how honest he was with himself. He realizes falling with a girl after first laying eyes on her is creepy. He isn’t afraid to let his feelings show. That is so rare in a guy which made me appreciate him even more. I definitely enjoyed chapters with his perspective more than Dakota, who nevertheless I still enjoyed. The plot in general was very cutesy. There were a few moments when things got a little dark, but those moments were still nice to read. I knew going in what direction the plot would go and the endgame, but the moments in between still made it good.
Don’t even get me started on this writing. From the very first page of the story I fell in love with the writing. There was something about it that just drew me in. The writing is simple yet elegant, the perfect combination. The writing style was perfect for this type of contemporary.

Judging a Book by it's Cover:
Cute cover with a light-hearted feel. Synopsis reads like a typical YA/NA feel-good drama.
Looking Deeper:
First-person alternating POV in present tense. Dakota grew up in an artist/ hippie community. She's vibrant, caring and not as naive as one would imagine her to be. Jack comes from money. His mother shelters and represses him due to a past tragedy she'd never gotten over. Both characters are young, barely old enough to start college in the fall, but he's already lost his best friend to suicide and she's suffered the ultimate betrayal from her boyfriend and best friend.
Dakota composes a message in a bottle and tosses into the ocean, only unbeknownst to her, it is found only moments later by Jack. Jack first caught sight of Dakota earlier that day and was immediately drawn to her. When he spots her bottle churning in the tide, he takes it as fate. However, he replies to her message under false pretenses and begins a pen pal-ship that is based only on half-truths. Now he needs to figure out how to transition from his pen pal character to the real Jack without ruining everything.
The characters are young. They both have some maturing and learning to do, especially Jack - but I blame a lot of that on his mother, too. There are several secondary characters in this story, all which seem to benefit the plot in one way or another without threatening to steal the spotlight. There's a natural and easy way about the dialogue and interaction that was nice, even the intentional awkwardness was conveyed well. While the plot progresses slow and steady, the writing style is fluid and easy to read. There were a handful of conflicts that were resolved in timely and age-appropriate manners. Predictability was low. The conclusion included a solid epilogue that added to the story nicely. Overall, a it was a fun, light read catering more to the teen and young adult crowd.

Love Jody Gehrman, love this book!

The Truth About Jack is the latest from Jody Gehrman, author of the Audrey's Guide books. It is told from the altering points of view of Jack and Dakota, two teenagers with very different voices.

The author is great at creating complex characters, characters with their own stories and issues and little quirks. There were many moments that a character behaved in a somewhat questionable way, but there were other moments in the history of the character that would ecplain it, turing the questionable behavior into something more sympathetic.

Jack's character is the epitome of this. There were moments when he came off as more than a little obsessive, a little stalkerish, a little to instalove. But, in reality, he was a bit on the dysfunctional side. He had had some issues with his family, with school, with life, and it left him isolated and insecure. There were times when I just couldn't get behind him as a character... until something was said that reminded me of the things he had been through. Then everything fell into place and I just wanted to hug him and root for him. Dakota, too, had been through her own fair share of drama recently and was just as scarred as Jack, albeit in a different way. She had been betrayed and it left her with trust issues that aren't helped along by more lies.

Dakota and Jack are such completely different characters, from totally opposite ends of the spectrum. He is privleged and sheltered, while she grew up in an artists' colony with much more freedom than most. The one thing they share is a love of creativity, Jack in music and Dakota in art. The altering points of view really underscored the differences, and the similarities, between them. I don't think that the story just couldn't have been told nearly as effectively with any other form of narration.

My Recommendation: This is a book that had happy moments, sad moments, funny moments, and even some creepy moments. But what made it a good read were Jack and Dakota, two very different characters that were richly created. Definitely a recommend!

Bad proof reading spoilt this book

As a Tasmanian, this book lost appeal for me when Cygnet was spelt as Signet, Burnie as Bernie and the two very well known newspapers became the Herald and Tribune instead of the Hobart Mercury and Launceston Examiner. All other places were accurate so I found these jarring and distracting and they took away from what was a very good and absorbing thriller. I don't know if the print copy has the same problems or it only relates to the Kindle version.

Kathryn Fox's rivetting forensic political pathology novel on agricultural land sales in Tasmania and GM

Australian medical novelist, Kathryn Fox's writing shows more interest in the lives of victims of crime than in the gruesome details of their deaths. Her obvious social conscience and real sensitivity makes other forensic crime writers, like Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs, look like prurient teen-age necrophiliacs.

Kathryn Fox is different. One is educated about society in her novels. Her most recent novel,
Fatal Impact set in Tasmania, an island which is the southernmost point of Australia, has developed beyond the social, into the political.

With ongoing news of the growth lobby's entrenchment in Tasmania, I was sensitized to the major topic, which was the Chinese takeover of agricultural land in Tasmania, aided and abetted by Australian politicians and property dealers. (Is there any difference?) Fox even cites the problems in Australia's Foreign Mergers and Acquisitions Law.

Australians know and are worried about the selling off of agricultural land on the mainland and in Tasmania, but only the organisations that lead the growth lobby, such as the Property Council of Australia and the State government executives can be aware of the design and extent of this dispossession and our disempowerment.

Kathryn Fox's characters find out more than you and I can, and you have to wonder whether this doctor-author, who has real-live experience in criminal investigations, knows more than most of us about the selling off of Australia. If she does, she is doing Tasmanians and other Australians a favour in outing the intrinsic sociopathy of the politicians who are selling off Australia piece by piece in a covertly planned and publicly defiant operation that goes right up to the office of prime minister and beyond, since it is international. I've just finished the seventh book in this series by Kathryn Fox and I can't wait for her to write some more I enjoyed each book on its own merits the characters and plots are realistic and believable Each book follows Dr Anya Crighton and her life but the same characters are the main people in each book and each story is different I'm a great fan of Kathy Reichs and Patricia Cornwell and I had bought the first two books of Kathryn Fox and had put off reading them but saw the reviews from other favourite authors like Jeffery Deaver and decided to read the first book I was in for a treat I loved it and couldn't put it down and over the the next week bought the rest and read them, couldn't put them down either, full of mystery, mayhem, murder, crime, forensics etc oh and love and family and real life anyone who likes Kathy Reichs and Patricia Cornwell will love Kathryn Fox
