Revenge is a Dish that Should Be Served Cold!

Tom Godwin (1915-1980) has a strange career as a sci-fi writer. He has written only three novels and around thirty short stories. With such exiguous production he managed to deliver an outstanding tale: "The Cold Equations" (1954) and a very readable novel: "Space Prison" (1958) (aka "The Survivors").
His works are very representative of the sci-fi from the `50s: not so great character development, action centered storyline, young adult readers oriented.
Nevertheless the present book managed to have a Gnome Press edition and at least two Pyramid Books edition, a good performance for a little known author.

The story starts when war between Humans and Gerns erupted. In this context a human interstellar ship with eight thousand colonists is captured. Half of the group is stranded in a hellish planet very suitably named Ragnarok.
The four thousand Rejects has to face 1.5 gravity pull, prowlers (a deadly mixture of wolf & tiger), unicorns (massive murderous bulls), Hell Fever, rotten weather (in short term and long term) amongst other "hazards".
Their numbers soon dwindle to forty nine!
From that point on generation after generation the Rejected, steel themselves with only one aim: take revenge on the Gerns.

One special attribute of this novel is, not being centered on a character but on successive generations of them, encompassing a two hundred years span.

This is a good sample of 50's sci-fi lit.

Introduced me to science fiction

My father read this to me as a kid over thirty years ago and so started my love of science fiction. I've always loved this book and still carry one of the first editions. I've probably read this book a dozen times over the years. I love the characters and how they survive their environment and finally get revenge on the Gerns. This is just a good old fashion sci-fi story.

Great book, bad format

This is a fantastic book, but the formatting is terrible. All italics are rendered in straight text with dashes on either side. I thought I could put up with this but it gets really annoying after a while. The other Kindle version of this, costing 99 cents, is beautifully formatted so definitely go with that one.

It is certainly worth it!

A unique and well written book

"Ethical Argument: Critical Thinking in Ethics" is one of the most unique books of philosophy available today. Its uniqueness is based in the dual purpose of the book: teaching the techniques of critical thinking in conjunction with theories of ethics. While most ethics textbooks and anthologies simply offer the theories of ethics from antiquity onward from source documents alone, without any framework for making sense of, or method for comparing one set of precepts against another, this book does not do that. The author gives the reader a course in the techniques of critical thinking, which serve as that framework. In a sense, the author kills two birds with one stone.

Most teaching in ethics is done formally, that is to say, theories are presented without any real world context. Most education experts would say that form without context is not a good way to teach any subject matter. This is another area in which this book shines. The theories are placed with the context of examples, stories, and scenarios by the author. By giving the theories a context, the author has provided teachers and students alike with a valuable tool in the study of both subjects.

The book is clearly written, with many helpful (and in some cases funny) illustrations and comic strips. It serves as a very good secondary textbook in any ethics class.

Paranormal love

Normally I am not one to put spoilers in my reviews, but I don't think it can be avoided this time. I will try to warn you before I add any spoilers :)

Let me start by saying this was not what I expected. When I was given this book to review, I expected your usual run of the mill ware romance and it is but it is also more in-depth than that.

William is a wolf-kin, he was bitten by another wolf-kin on a full moon decades ago and is now a Moon Forged wolf. His pack alpha, who is also his father, was killed by not just any 'hunter' but by the hangman.

Chloe is a normal everyday girl going about her life. She comes home from a night out with her friends and is kidnapped by William.

William believes that Chloe's father is none other than 'the hangman'. His pack is in a terrible state after the loss of the Alpha and he is on a mission to claim the Alpha title for himself and get justice for his fathers death.

Chloe is very strong minded and puts up quite a fight even managing to run away from William at one point, but she is soon caught. A semi truce is established between the two when Chloe finally realises that she can not escape.

William and Chloe are soon found by Remus and Romulus, William's adoptive twin brothers. The twins are Blood Born wolves and as such are much more aggressive than William or other moon forged wolves. They want Chloe and will stop at nothing to get her. This is where Chloe learns about wolf-kin and that her father is the hangman.

SPOLIER ALERT!!
Somewhere along the way, William and Chloe develop feelings for each other and eventually William claims Chloe as his mate. Romulus bites Chloe turning her into a Moon Forged wolf. From there things get very interesting and I found myself unable to put my kindle down.

This book was amazing from start to finish and I strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance with lots of action.

I really loved the take that the authors took with this story. This was not your regular shifter story and that truly made this one of a kind.

Very good book! It is not your usual werewolf story ...

Very good book! It is not your usual werewolf story line. William kidnaps Chloe because her father killed his father. All she can think of is escaping, until it is proven usless. They are drawn together and eventually Chloe helps William. This is a hot and steamy book, with suspense added to it. Battles with both family and pack, secrets will be revealed. Do not want to give any spoilers, so will only say expect the unexpected and not everything is as it seems. Loved the interactions between all of the characters in this one.

Now that she’s so over him. Or…maybe she’s not? Because what Reece doesn’t know is that Cleo has a secret. If it had been up to her? She would never have let him go.

Reece not for me

I enjoy this authors books, although this one was not for me. I found Reese to be niave and shallow. He spends half the book with another girl. His internal dialogue was all over the place. How he loves Chloe and knew something was not right the day she leaves him. But two days later he is with the girl who degrades Chleo when ever she can. He talks about how that was not something he is proud of but he stays with this girl the whole summer (and most the book) never once going to see Chloe. He talks about how hot his current girlfriend is and how he needs to be nicer to her and then he cannot stop thinking of Chloe. It was one contradiction after another and all he does is hurt the girl he loves and gives her up without a fight. Again I do enjoy this authors books but this one did not hit the mark.

Where can I get a Reece?

There are certain elements I have come to expect from Amity Hope's books.

A strong leading female.
That strong female always makes the first move with the leading male.
A kick-ass best friend.
A dose of realism in the climactic scene.

I am a little concerned that people are going to expect too much from this book. This isn't Twisted, it's not meant to be Twisted. It does not have the same heavy themes and the characters are not going to compare. This is a lighter read, but not completely without drama.

Cleo is a strong leading female, now a senior in high school. She has a lot of issues at home, all in the form of her younger sister's father, who I understand is her step-father. Cleo's mother died and she takes care of her younger sister, both emotionally and mostly financially, but sometimes her sister's father will contribute.

The story begins with Reece -- he is in love with Cleo and doesn't understand what happened between them. He's angry but is still trying to understand. The one comparison I can make to Twisted is that if Maya Anderson were a boy, she would be Reece.

Maya took rejection, was never deterred. I think Reece may actually top her on this one. After a seemingly perfect relationship that was healthy and stable, unlike most teenage relationships, Cleo drops Reece in the worst way in the world of a teenager.

At school, in front of everyone. Not only that, but as Reece is basically begging her not to break up with him, another guy walks up and Cleo takes his hand and walks away with him. Away from Reece.

After that humiliating and devastating experience, Reece STILL pursues Cleo when he realizes that everything isn't as it appears. Don't get me wrong, he isn't following her like a puppy trying to win her back. He figures out that she is hiding something, that she didn't break up with him to see other people as she originally said.

Most adults would struggle with that public rejection, but here is a teenage boy taking it like it's nothing. That's how much he cares about Cleo.

Little does he know, her secrets are deep. There is lying, betrayal, and cruelty. Not on Cleo's part, she isn't the only actor in this situation. She's just the main piece that takes the fall.

In the end, I like that Reece doesn't play hero. It's realistic, he doesn't use physical force to avenge Cleo. He's there for her, and does what he can to support her, but doesn't turn all Hulk.

As expected, the supporting characters are well developed and Cleo's best friend and sister are pretty amazing.

Reece and Cleo are a sickeningly perfect couple, they are solid and truly love one another. It's beautiful and you can't help but cheer for them.

Once again, Amity does not disappoint. This book edges toward the more adult side of YA, but I think it'd be great for any age.

I read this book because I recognized the author's name. I read a book called Twisted by Amity Hope and loved it. I figured this would be a good book as well. It definitely was.

I like the way the author builds her characters. The reader can't help but become engrossed in their lives. Reece is a great character. Although he comes from a privileged background he is not a snob. He is a caring, genuine guy. His feelings for Cleo are so apparent. Cleo is trying to survive her life. She wants to do what is right. She puts the needs of others before her own and that just really sucks. She is a teenager and shouldn't have to deal with what she does. Amity drew me in with these two characters.

The story line was a great one. At first the voice we hear is Reece's. He can't understand what went wrong with his relationship with Cleo. He is trying to figure it out. Then the reader gets a glimpse into Cleo's life and things start to fall in place. It's heartbreaking to see two people who belong together be kept apart. I like the way Reece starts to open his eyes to what's going on and that he doesn't give up on Cleo. This is a great read.

I like it when I can find an author that doesn't disappoint. This is the second book I have read by Amity Hope and both experiences were worthwhile. I will definitely read any other book by Amity Hope. Her writing is excellent and her characters are ones I can attach to. Very Satisfactory read.
