Should be given out to Tubies!

How I wish I had had this book when my son first got his tube! Instead we were sent home with order to pump him full of formula and work with our therapists on oral skills. Easier said than done. Only after dumping formula altogether and switching to a blended diet has our son really taken off and stopped puking! Thanks to the author for bringing this to market and I hope that every GI/ pediatrician and dietitian reads this. This book even helped convince me to start a company providing real food to people on tubes - [...]

Great info on Tubefeeding - especially using pureed foods

I bought this book and the Homemade Blended Formula Handbook when my son's nutritionist gave us the okay to try pureed food through his g-tube. This book is fantastic! My son has had a g-tube for 2 1/2 years, so I skipped some of the info on caring for the button and cleaning the tubing and syringes. But, if you or someone you are caring for is getting a feeding tube, this book will provide you with valuable info on what to expect and how to care for your tube.

If you are interested in trying pureed food through a g-tube, this book has many practical tips (like how to unclog your tube when food gets stuck in it) and tons of recipes. It will teach you how to create a recipe or recipes with the correct amount of protein, grains, fruits and veggies and it provides great info on herbs that can help with reflux, stomach motility and stomach aches. I also liked the tip on a water bolus 30 minutes before a feeding as a way to help empty out the stomach. I found this book to be more helpful than the Blended Formula Handbook, which is a compilation of articles from parents, therapists and healthcare providers.

This book is a must have for any tube fed person or caregiver of a tube fed person. All you need to know. I cannot begin to explain how lovely this will be for new families for years to come. I am so happy to have it in my hands.

Has there ever been a better subject for a Dorling Kindersley book? Clearly, the DK approach of melding free-floating illustrations with supportive text is ideally suited to an instructional guide on hand reading--the bigger and clearer the pictures of the hand's life lines, fate lines, etc., the easier it will be to grasp this essentially visual subject. The DK illustrators are up to the challenge, supplying a cornucopia of hands, fingers, and thumbs to illustrate not only the lines on the palm but also the different designs of the hand itself--shape, size of fingers, the hand's overall topography. Sidebars offer a wealth of snappy background information (how to make a handprint, for example). The only weakness here is Reid's text, which too often seems overly simplistic: lots of lines indicate a high-strung personality; few mean a calm nervous system. Now there's a surprise. Still, if it's detailed pictures of hands you're after, DK is the place to go. Ilene Cooper

Reviewer: Psychic Vickiveil from Cincinnati, Ohio United States Terrific Palmistry book here. The photos are mainly life size, as well as in color. When Lori goes into description on any certain line or aspect of a line, you have the photo example of the palm, rather than a hand drawn black and white scribble. Ever try to locate a fine line on your hand from a cartoon style drawing?!?! It will certainly throw away your interest in palmistry fast! I wished I would have saved time and money by purchasing this book right off the bat. Being hardcover, large size, and photos of real hands, makes it easy to learn and locate the lines on your hands or a friends hands while still holding the book open on the table or your lap. The only reason I didn't rate this book a 5 star is because I do wish they would have went more into descriptions of the variations that can take place in the lines. They touched on this subject more so than any other palmistry book. However, since I did find this remarkably informative, I think what I am looking for isn't going to come inside any book. So outside of this book coming with a live teacher for the student! I think you will find it one of the best available! The book even presented sample readings along with the wonderful visual guides.

This book has great illustrations!

I thought that this book had an easy way of showing me on how to become more proficient in the arts of palmistry. Everyone wanted to borrow it from me. It explained things more with the pictures and illustrations, than any other of the books I have read on this subject. I would like to recommend this book for anyone who is interested in palmistry. This book is excellent!

Clearest book on Palmistry out there

I've got several books on Palmistry, and this one stands head and shoulders above the rest -at least, for those relatively new to the art. This is not meant to be some advanced text for the expert looking for more unusual, esoteric interpretations; it does what it was designed to do extremely well. For the vast majority of people interested in the subject, it will be the only book on palmistry they'll ever need.
It's primary advantage is it's employment of full color photographs. Visual aides are extremely important in properly getting across the widely varying physical elements of something like palmistry, and where most books fail, it's due to using overly simplified and frankly, unrealistic drawings. Most hands in the real world do not fit so neatly into the template of an idealized hand drawing. This book however, is much clearer and does a better job of conveying it's information clearly. Why don't the other books do this?
The information is also doled out at a logical and comfortable pace for the beginner, and things are neatly organized. It was a joy to read and learn from.

I would buy the software that comes with it again, but not the book

I teach introduction to logic at a local community college and I used this text for my class--once. I will not again. It is overpriced, wordy, and badly structured. However, my biggest problem was that the questions the book would ask my students to answer in the homework would often (1) rely on knowledge not taught in the chapter, (2) had the wrong answer in the answer key, or (3) asked questions with many right answers but listed only one as right in the answer key.

Furthermore, the online [...] homework was way too advanced for my students to work with. It requires long load-times, Java scripts, etc. The ilrn.com site also has quite a few *kinks* to work out (automatic grading is often wrong). Unless you have a class full of students with good computers, good internet connections, and some basic internet knowledge (e.g. how to install Java into their browser); the online homework will be more trouble then it's worth. If the *kinks* are worked out and ilrn.com is programmed to require less of the computers (get rid of the Java!) then this has the potential to be a great service. Maybe, in the 13th or 15th edition this will be a good addition to the (otherwise poor) book.

I will agree with another reviewer that the "CD is unnecessary." The CD covers the same material as the book, and so either the book or the CD is unnecessary. However, the book is miserable while the CD is excellent. If anything is unnecessary, it is the book. The only saving grace for Hurley is the EXCELLENT CD-rom program that came along with 9th edition of his book. This is a 5-star computer program for learning logic and I would use it again in teaching my classes if the CD could be purchased separately.

Since I also don't like the Copi and Cohen Intro to Logic text, it looks like spring quarter I am going to try using the Henry Gensler "Introduction to Logic." The software you get with the Gensler book doesn't look anywhere near as promising as what comes with the Hurley text, but at least the Gensler text looks like a good book.

REVIEW UPDATE: It has been five years since I wrote this original review and while I had claimed that I would never use Hurley again, a logic course fell into my lap at the last minute and Hurley's 11th edition had already been assigned to the students. So, having just taught another logic course using the Hurley text, I thought I might revisit my thoughts on the text:

* The 11th edition of the text isn't very different from the 9th edition (or from any other edition I suspect). A few different chapters at the end about legal and moral reasoning (which I didn't look at and can't review), but the core parts of the text covering arguments, fallacies, categorical/propositional/predicate logic all remain nearly unchanged.
* Even if you buy the most recent edition of the text, it does not automatically come with access to the online Aplia assignment/course software. Depending on if you are buying the textbook alone (about $80) or the textbook bundled with Aplia (about $160), Aplia access costs an additional $80 on top of the book's cost. However, if you just spend $80 to buy Aplia access by itself, then you do get access to an electronic copy of the most recent version of the text. So if you need the text for a class and the class involves Aplia, then just buy an Aplia access code stand-alone rather than a physical copy of the text. Or, if you really want a physical copy of the text, then just buy a cheap used 10th or 9th edition text.
* Aplia continues to disappoint. If memory serves, while the online assignment/course software (then called "ilrn.com" but now "Aplia") has improved since the last time I used it to teach a class (2006), it still has a long way to go. I had a lot of trouble creating my own assignments out of the key bank and eventually gave up on doing so, the problems in the key bank are rarely creative or insightful but often tricky in ways that are not related to an understanding of logic, many of the problems are graded using incorrect answers (I have the fallacy chapter in mind specifically), the pre-made proof construction assignments in Aplia swing radically from too easy to too hard, the options for the instructor in Aplia are too restrictive (e.g. I would like to offer my students an unlimited number of tries at a proof, not a maximum of 3), and many more problems I see no reason to continue to list. All I mean to say that while there have been improvements in Aplia and while there are several things I like about Aplia, I still firmly believe that Aplia is a poor choice as a teaching tool. Furthermore, now there is a better option I can tell you about! If you are a logic instructor and you want a computer program that gives and grades assignments, don't use Hurley/Aplia. Instead, let me recommend Barker-Plummer, Barwise, and Etchemendy's "Language, Proof and Logic". LPL is a far superior book/software *if* what you want to do is teach a class through a computer program. I used the first edition of LPL in 2007 and it was great. However, LPL is not for everyone. The book really only works in conjunction with the online LPL assignment/grading software and isn't suited for standalone use. Also note that LPL just covers propositional and predicate logic, LPL has little to nothing on informal logic, fallacies, Venn Diagrams, categorical logic, and so on. Myself, I am not sure if I will use LPL as a text again, but only because I don't know if I like teaching a course that is so computerized. However, if you do aim to teach a course using an assignment/grading computer program, LPL does this far better than Hurley/Aplia.
* In my original review I also mentioned that I don't like the Copi and Cohen text. Having re-skimmed the Copi and Cohen text, it might not be as bad as the Hurely text. I still don't like either the Copi and Cohen text or the Hurely text, but gun to my head I might have to pick Copi and Cohen over Hurely.
* In my original review I also mentioned my plan try Henry Gensler's "Introduction to Logic." A student stole my copy of the text and I only used it once in 2006, but I liked it. I don't remember it very well, but I do remember liking the text when I used it. The computer software with Gensler's text was very primitive but helpful. Gensler's text didn't have online assignment/grading software to go with it, but if that's what you want then let me again recommend LPL as a textbook. One distinctive thing about Gensler's text is that it includes a number of chapters on further areas of logic such as modal logic, doxastic logic, deontic logic, etc. I used the chapter on modal logic when I used Gensler's text and students picked it up very well after having learned predicate logic and how to deal with quantifiers. I might use Gensler again in the future if I decide to teach a non-computerized logic course. However, I would need to re-read it before deciding. So let me tentatively suggest instructors take a look at Gensler's text if you aim to teach a non-computerized logic course. I don't remember it well enough to give it a full recommendation and I don't own a copy anymore to re-read.
* Since writing my review, I've used Richard Feldman's "Reason & Argument" (2nd Ed) several times to teach an informal logic course. It does contain a few chapters on formal logic, but Feldman's text is clearly intended for a critical thinking, practical reasoning, or informal logic course. It is absolutely great. I only mention it since Hurely's logic text does contain a good amount of material on informal logic (fallacies, etc.) and I just wanted to point out a different text that does a far far better job covering similar material. Next fall I am going to teach a half-informal logic/half-formal logic course and I am thinking I might use Feldman for the first half of that course and then some other strictly formal-logic textbook for the second half of the course (like LPL or the "Learning Logic 6.0 CD-rom").
* In my original review I sang the praises of the "Learning Logic" disk that came free with the Hurley textbook. I said then: "This is a 5-star computer program for learning logic and I would use it again in teaching my classes if the CD could be purchased separately." Well that disk no longer comes free with the textbook, but can now be purchased separately for $30 ([...] I am strongly considering using Feldman's informal logic textbook and the Hurley logic CD together for my next course. The disk covers the exact same material as the book, but is a far better teaching tool than the Hurley text. The "Learning Logic" disk is not assignment/grading software like Aplia, rather it is a logic textbook come alive as a semi-interactive computer program.

Overall: If you are already using the Hurley text and Aplia, then more power to you. Let me just recommend that you check out Hurley's "Learning Logic" CD for use in your course. I suspect your students will get a lot more out of the CD then the text. But if you haven't used the Hurley text but are only considering it, I advise against your adopting the Hurley text for your courses.

Good book for Academic instruction

First, I am familar with the 6th edition, so my comments concern that edition. I have both learned from (as a student) and taught from (as an instructor) this book. The book's strength is in formal or deductive logic and not informal or inductive logic. (Although it covers inductive logic and critical thinking). This book should not be used by someone who is looking just to argue better, but is much more suited to an academic setting at the level of a senior in high school or college freshman/sophmore. I am not saying that it is a hard read or too technical, as a matter of fact, it is quite basic, but it is too dry for the average reader and you would simply not pick up the information from simply reading it; you would have to work the problems and interact with others who are also reading the book.

Just Great

Hurley’s logic is simply the best first-order logic book I have encounter, to date. Potential buyers should definitely get the tenth edition onward, or at least the ninth edition, otherwise, the book is quite different and the formatting, for one, is considerably poorer. Not only is the arrangement of the book aesthetically appealing and easy to work with, the formatting makes for easy learning. I did have an outstanding professor, when I took my logic course, but I definitely believe this book could be used without an instructor. About a year later, after having read the book, I used it again for preparation for a metalogic course, and it worked for me just as well as when I had the first time, with an instructor.

The book covers pretty much everything I have seen covered in an undergraduate first-order logic course. The book begins with informal fallacies, works through a great deal of syllogistic and medieval logic, and moves on up to natural deduction, and so on. The book, I think, tries to adhere to a chronology of development of logic, as it was in history, but, where efficacious, Hurley has placed the most pertinent ideas together for maximized umph. The problems help the reader develop simpler skills first, before moving on to harder ones in that section. In this respect, the book is very well organized, each problem eliciting for one more new skill, once the previous one has been answered. At least half of the answers are in the back of the book, so, again, and instructor is not absolutely necessary. This book, also, does not take long to go through, which is a feat for a technical book of this kind. An adept, with some dedication, can make it through this book in a month’s time, I believe, and I feel that most students of average intelligence will be able to assimilate the vast majority of its content in four months’ time (i.e., a semester’s study).

Recommended to all, and I think any high-schooler (or anyone familiar with the abstract concept of a “variable,” perhaps middle-schoolers) upward would find tremendous value in this text. If you choose to read one book on logic, I think this would be the one I recommend.

superb intense Appalachia collection

This superb intense twelve story collection focuses on the people of Appalachia who though impoverished refuse to give up their pride even as they seek a shimmer of happiness. The well written stories are very short with the longest being 30 pages; yet each goes deep baring the darkness of the soul with slight flickers of light that sputter allegorically.

Opening with "Hard Times" in which a Depression Era farmer's wife insists the impoverished neighbors' dog is stealing their eggs; when confronted the patriarch neighbor slices the throat of his canine to prove he was not the thief. Fishing for the felon proves shockingly successful. In sixteen pages, Ron Rash provides a cast of poor people struggling with survival but doing so with pride. That theme is throughout the anthology whether it is the young turning to meth "Back of Beyond" in which a pawn shop owner knows who the addicts are as they are his best customers including his nephew. "The Ascent" focuses on a tweener who makes a family with corpses in a crashed plane he finds. Whether he centers on the Civil War with "Dead Confederates" and "Lincolnites", the Great Depression ("Hard Times") or the present, Mr. Nash provides his readers with a profound look at the people of Appalachia where pride and hard work battle poverty and drugs.

Each story is a gem

I think Ron Rash is such a fine writer, with an elegance that belies the grittiness of his stories. He obviously knows his subject matter well and is able to make us feel his characters' pain and the toughness of their lives. His stories all have a strong sense of place and show his years of Appalachian heritage. Imbued with a quiet beauty, each story paints a complete picture.

His beautiful and lyrical language just grabs the reader and does not let go. Here is something that just was so touching:

"He imagined towns where hungry men hung on boxcars looking for work that couldn't be found, shacks where families lived who didn't even have one swaybacked milk cow. He imagined cities where blood stained the sidewalks beneath buildings tall as ridges. He tried to imagine a place worse than where he was."

The characters in Ron Rash's new collection of stories are country people. Some still live on the home place, some are a generation removed residing in nearby small towns. His country, and theirs, is Appalachia -- Virginia, the Carolinas, the Blue Ridge and the Great Smokey mountains. He knows these people well, knows what keeps them in place and what holds them down. Most of them are in a bad way, out of work, broke, in trouble at home, crossways with the sheriff, the boss, the park police. They are gritty, resentful of authority and willing to resort to self-help to head off the law, the bank, the prying neighbor. In "Back of Beyond" and in "The Ascent," two of the most affecting stories in the collection, Rash combs through the family wreckage caused by crystal meth addiction. The stories create a fictional bridge to Nick Redding's 2009 book-length treatment of the epidemic, "Methland: The Death and Life of An American Small Town." In "Dead Confederates," the reenactment boys get their comeuppance and in "Lincolnites," a Confederate soldier forages at his own risk when he takes on a young farm wife with Union sympathies. Impressed as I am by the stark realism of and dark humor in these stories, I longed for a tall tale or two on the order of "Their Ancient, Glittering Eyes," the opening story in "Chemistry and Other Stories," Rash's 2007 collection. Next time, perhaps. Finally, a word to the squeamish. Save "Hard Times," the first story in the book, for last. It is such a disquieting metaphor for the deprivation endured by so many Americans in the current recession that you might be discouraged from reading the others and there is not one story here that you will want to skip.

Brilliant!!

As with Book 1 in this series of 3 books, all I can say is well done...AGAIN.

Both this and Book 1 in this series kept me riveted and unable to put the story down until I had finished each of these first two Books in the series.

Only problem now is...Where's Book 3? When will it be published? I'm talking about the 3rd Book, titled: Narcissist: Unmasked.

Please do get that final book in this series published and available for purchase soon, least I move on and forget your writing of this three part tale and never look back.

I hope it doesn't come to that.

Anyway, very, very enjoyable, HG, and very well written as only you could do, knowing the narcissist mind as you do.

Very long and drawn out. Could have made the story shorter. Was interesting however the thinking sod a narcissist. Disappointed Amazon doesn't have all the books. Read the whole 2 or 3 books wanting to see how the twisted story turns out and it wasn't available!
