No Citizen Left Behind, by Meira Levinson

While teaching at an all-Black middle school in Atlanta, Meira Levinson realized that students’ individual self-improvement would not necessarily enable them to overcome their profound marginalization within American society. This is because of a civic empowerment gap that is as shameful and antidemocratic as the academic achievement gap targeted by No Child Left Behind. No Citizen Left Behind argues that students must be taught how to upend and reshape power relationships directly, through political and civic action. Drawing on political theory, empirical research, and her own on-the-ground experience, Levinson shows how de facto segregated urban schools can and must be at the center of this struggle.

Recovering the civic purposes of public schools will take more than tweaking the curriculum. Levinson calls on schools to remake civic education. Schools should teach collective action, openly discuss the racialized dimensions of citizenship, and provoke students by engaging their passions against contemporary injustices. Students must also have frequent opportunities to take civic and political action, including within the school itself. To build a truly egalitarian society, we must reject myths of civic sameness and empower all young people to raise their diverse voices. Levinson’s account challenges not just educators but all who care about justice, diversity, or democracy.

Meira Levinson's NO CITIZEN LEFT BEHIND Reminds Us That We All Have A Voice That Deserves To Be Heard
By Cyrus Webb
One of the worst feelings in the world is to be in a place an be treated like you're invisible. It's a terrible experience, but one that men and women have to contend with each and every day. What Meira Levinson's book NO CITIZEN LEFT BEHIND reminded me of, however, is that this is also a situation that young people in certain areas have to contend with as well.

This book is more than just about education and the disparities that exist in some areas of the United States. It is about what seems like an attitude of neglect for some and even apathy towards others that seemingly are being set up for failure. Meira knows this world firsthand because she taught in it, but we are able to see through her account exactly what some of those who are supposed to mold our future are having to deal with.

As someone who is all about discussing a problem with the hopes of finding a solution, my initial reaction to the book is what can I do to help fix this. I then realized that it's a question we all have to ask ourselves, and be willing to step up when the answer becomes clear to us. First we have to sound the alarm that there is trouble in our education system. Then we have to look for ways to bridge the gaps that exist, realizing that people of all walks of life deserve the opportunity to reach their own personal greatness. And that personal greatness doesn't have to be defined by what those in their families have been able to do or even those in their neighborhoods.

It's all about hope, and not giving up on that hope even when things might not move as quickly as we would like. Meira Levinson tells us that change can occur, but we have to be willing to evolve and change ourselves in order to achieve it. NO CITIZEN LEFT BEHIND is a great resource for anyone looking to make sure that those in the next generation realize they have a voice and are given the tools to make sure it is heard.

Important book for educators and anyone interested in the health of democracy in the US
By E Kanner
In No Citizen Left Behind Dr. Levinson clearly articulates a rationale for why the civic empowerment gap is a problem for all Americans. The fact that many voices (mostly those of the poor and people of color) are not heard by politicians and policy-makers not only tarnishes the promise of American democracy but also yields ineffective public policy. Then Dr. Levinson presents one solution to this problem: improved civic education, especially for students in disenfranchised communities. Using anecdotes from her years as a teacher, arguments based on her training as a political philosopher and ample social science research, she engages the reader in a provocative discussion about the state of civic education today and how it could be improved. Dr. Levinson's writing contains all of the rigor of the academy, but is written for a general audience who just wants to know more about how American democracy can become more inclusive. Teachers and teacher educators, especially history teachers, should definitely read No Citizen Left Behind. I am a teacher educator and will be assigning this book to all of my pre-service teachers. Thank you, Dr. Levinson.

No Citizen Left Behind
By Jessica G
In No Citizen Left Behind Meira Levinson puts some fire into the often dull argument that the United States needs to get serious about civic education, calling for reform for a system that today largely excludes poor and minority students from democratic participation. Levinson explores the causes of and potential solutions to this "civic empowerment gap" through many lenses. As a political philosopher, she considers the political, sociological and historical context of the United States and of our education system, closely examining the meanings of citizenship and democracy. She asks hard questions about how we teach civics in a diverse country where our ethnoracial identities invariably dictate our experiences of citizenship. She grapples with how these theories trickle down into practice by sharing personal stories from her years of inner-city teaching. In addressing these questions and others, she doesn't fantasize about an unreachable Shangri-La of civic education. Instead, she clearly outlines the qualities of her gold standard curriculum, Action Civics, and highlights schools and organizations that have begun to actualize it.

This book is an important read, especially now, as political discourse seems to be dissolving into party-line semantics. While the book highlights many severe problems with our schools and political institutions, it also provides hope by showing that it is possible to educate ALL citizens to create a robust and engaged democracy.

Depression era Albany comes alive in three stunning novels.
By Mary Whipple
In the author's "Prelude in a Saloon," published as the preface of this trilogy, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist William Kennedy portrays himself as Daniel Quinn, nephew of Billy Phelan (of Billy Phelan's Greatest Game) and grandson of Francis Phelan (of Ironweed), as he begins an interview with an old gangster who worked closely with Jack "Legs" Diamond (of Legs). With tongue-in-cheek humor, Quinn/Kennedy reveals how his writing career began and how he came to know the main characters of this trio of books set in Depression-era Albany, New York.

Legs, set in 1930 - 1931, is a fictional biography of Jack "Legs" Diamond, thief/bootlegger/murderer, a man who lived the high life and who double-crossed and cheated his way to success, controlling speakeasies, illegal alcohol, real estate, and gambling, a man who survived eleven bullets in three separate assassination attempts before finally being brought down. An uncomplicated but well-written and often violent novel, Legs sets the scene for Billy Phelan's Greatest Game and Ironweed, both set in 1938. (4 stars)

Billy Phelan's Greatest Game is far more sophisticated, with more fully drawn characters, well-developed suspense, and themes dealing with fathers and sons and their values--intergenerational problems which reveal the changing morality of Depression-era Albany. Billy Phelan, part-time bookie and small-time card player and gambler is asked to monitor the activities of one of his fellow-card players, suspected of involvement in the kidnapping of Charlie MacCall, son and nephew of the two men running the political machine of Albany. Remaining true to his own values, Billy is surprised when his father Francis Phelan, who has just reappeared after abandoning the family twenty-two years before, suggests cooperating. (5 stars)

Ironweed is the Pulitzer-Prize-winning culmination of the trio, the story of Francis Phelan, an emotionally gripping novel about down-and-out "bums" and the people with whom they come into contact, which tears at the heart without being sentimental. Hard-edged and sometimes violent, this novel is a fully developed, moving, and insightful look at those who live apart from society because their dreams have died. (5 BIG stars)

Fully absorbing, whether you are just looking for good reading or are a student of writing, these three novels include many overlapping characters and a clear sense of time, place, and society. They are exciting and filled with important observations about life without being moralistic, and the dialogue and level of detail are often breath-taking. They are also an opportunity to see in successive novels, the development of one of the great writing talents of the twentieth century, with each novel more complex and fully developed than the previous one. Outstanding! Mary Whipple

Ryan & Alex compromising
By Jennifer G.
Vow (Bayonet Scars #4.5)
By: JC Emery
4/5 stars

I bought and read this novella as part of the box set, Where Souls Spoil.

Vow is about Ryan & Alex and moving forward with their relationship. Ryan wants a more permanent union between the two of them. Ryan wants the stability & the permanence of marriage. He’s continually been pushing Alex for marriage, but she continues to push back, saying she’s not ready.

Alex is cautious of making a lasting commitment because of how she grew up and how women were viewed within the mafia life. She wants to be an equal partner in her marriage, like her birth mom Ruby is with Jim. She doesn’t want to just be a possession or someone who requires constant protection. Her life right now is in extreme danger, so she spends her days at Ruby & Jim’s home, living with Ryan and under protection at all times.

While this novella was supposed to show a more loving side of Ryan and have him not be such a jerk, I don’t think this novella did that. He still had his straight up jerkwad tendencies, thoughts & word vomit. But it did show that he’s willing to compromise for Alex and not just bully her into doing what he wants.

This novella is like all the books in this series, in that it overlaps in timeframe

Loved this extra snippet into the lives of Ryan and Alex
By Mignon Mykel
Received a review copy in exchange for an honest review. Original post can be found at:
http://mnonmklreviews.blogspot.com/2015/06/review-vow-blog-tour.html

I loved VOW so much more than RIDE. Don't get me wrong, I loved watching Ryan fall for his Cub, but this little extra snippet into their lives was so fun to read. Alex has her insecurities and wants truth from Ryan at times other than when he's satiated (he's always agreeable then) but he's holding back on her -- he wants his ring on her finger and she keeps saying she's not ready.

In VOW, Ryan learns just how strong his Cub is. Alex wants nothing more than to make Ryan proud, and Ryan wants nothing more than to keep Alex safe. They both learn a lot about the person they love in the few hours this story takes place.

Ryan wants to have what Pops and Ma have -- and maybe, just maybe, he and Alex can recreate that.

Absolutely, hands down, enjoyed this novelette. And as an added bonus? J.C. Emery has included a ton of background on the club, the members, and a snippet for the next story!

who doesn't love Forsaken
By des reads lots
There are times when I look back at the story of Alex's story and I get mad at Ryan. Not only in this novella but also in their first book. I get mad for how he treats her. I get mad for her. I know she gets mad, but I just wish that backbone would be a little stronger. Then we get these little snippets, little things he does and I find myself saying "hey, looks he's not a complete a-hole. " And in reading this I'm actually kind of proud of Cub. I can't wait til she finds her backbone, and I mean full fledge finds it, til she is this really strong woman. Til she has the balls to stand up and people take notice of her strength. That's what I can't wait for. But i do love that this novella gave us an insider look at Ryan and Alex, maybe he's not as bad as i thought.

I love that JC gave us yet another look into the life of Forsaken. I love that we get Duke, Jeremy and Ryan, even if it's just for a little bit. JC manages to suck us right back into the life of Forsaken and I am not the least bit upset. Who doesn't love these bad boys?

Good but lacks details of survival experience
By B. McEwan
I bought this book because I happened to turn on the television and see the author, Juliane Koepcke, being interviewed. The bare bones of her story sounded amazing -- During a storm, the small airplane in which she and her mother were flying broke apart. While still strapped in her seat she fell several *miles* down into the Peruvian jungle. And survived! I had to know more.

As far as it goes, the book is good. The problem is that it doesn't go far enough. The author explains that she was able to survive because her parents were biologists and had taught her about the jungle, where she was raised for much of her life. The tone is matter-of-fact as she describes how she slept through her initial injuries, including a concussion, then got up and walked out of the jungle by following a stream. That was all well and good, but I wanted to know details. Exactly how did she muster the courage to do this? What did she eat? How did she cope with the isolation? The probability that her mother had not survived? Etc., etc.

I suspect that the lack of detail is because all of this happened to Koepcke back in the 1960s, when she was 17 years old. She never wrote about her experience until now, so it seems probable that she might not remember all of the small details that would make her story more compelling. The only reason that she wrote her book now is that she hopes to create a nature preserve in that part of Peru where she lived with her parents and wants visibility for her cause. Nothing at all wrong with that and, in fact, I think it's a great idea. It's just that the book is promoted as a survival story.

To be fair, one could say that the book is really more than a survival story in that Koepcke spends a lot of time talking about the jungle and why it is important to preserve it. She includes some interesting tidbits about the animals, especially the birds, that live there and also writes lovingly of the people and culture of the place. All of this adds enough substance to her story to make it book length, rather than merely a magazine article or television news feature.

Overall, When I Fell From the Sky is a decent read, but if you are looking for a survival story along the lines of Aron Ralston's Between a Rock and a Hard Place, this isn't it.

Incredible survival but story is 90 per cent off subject
By Warren P
Juliane Koepckes survival is one of the most miraculous to ever occur.

From the moment the twin turboprop Lanza passenger plane with ninety two passengers on board runs into a thunderstorm, gets struck by lightning disintegrating as it plummets to earth from two miles above to being found in a loggers hut it is hard to imagine the initial horror and then seemingly impossible predicament a young seventeen year old girl finds herself in.

Having stirred out of unconsciousness Juliane has found herself still strapped in her seat sitting upright and alive but the two adjoined seats next to her were empty (one had been her mothers).

The tree canopy of the jungle had cushioned the impact but she now finds herself alone concussed with a broken colour bone, a gash on her thigh and another in her upper back that later gets maggot infested (although she hadn't realised at the time she had ligament damage and a large splinter in her foot)

She is wearing a thin cotton mini dress, has one sandal on her foot and the glasses she relies on are gone.
A bag of sweets and nothing else.

With the added trauma of not knowing if her mother is alive or dead she wanders off soon discovering other dead passengers stuck head first into the earth still strapped in their seats with their legs in the air.
With these images and thoughts in her head she faces the inhospitable wilderness for the next eleven days.

What you will find in this book in regards to the actual crash and Juliannes survival is pretty thin and is basically covered in not much more than one chapter.

A keen conservationist Julianne had spent much of her childhood in the middle of the Peruvian rainforest where her parents founded a biological research station.
Initially after the accident she'd returned to Germany but her passion for the preservation of the forest and its habitat had become her passion and for someone who hated and tried to shun the publicity surrounding her survival this book is more her vehicle to get her conservation message across.

Unfortunately because Juliannes book is ninety percent not about what book purchasers are likely to expect I will only give it three stars.

It took her many years took to give a clearer picture of her survival a many false accounts by other people and media had been told.

Her delay in not wanting to tell and exaggerate her own story is a sign of integrity with an unselfish agenda being rainforest preservation.

This is not like another so called pumped up jungle survival story by Yossi Ghinsberg where his own contradictory accounts on utube, his book and the television show "I shouldn't be alive" are given as he milks his little misadventure for all the money he can.

Compelling and Revealing
By Literary Lass
The story follows Juliane, a young woman who really did fall from the sky, through her ordeal in the jungle, as well as her life in the aftermath of this incredible, miraculous survival. WHEN I FELL FROM THE SKY is a rare book because it not only details everything this young woman had to face while in a Peruvian rain forest--called a green hell--but it also explores the effects of survivor guilt, overnight celebrity, and trying to figure out one's place in the world. It's a great read because we see Juliane's struggle internally and externally. A very, very good autobiography that will have you wondering how you would fare in similar circumstances.

Seven Theories of Religion, by Daniel L. Pals

Seven Theories of Religion introduces a sequence of "classic" attempts to explain religion scientifically, presenting each in brief outline and in non-technical language. It considers first the views of E.B. Tylor and James Frazer, two Victorian pioneers in anthropology and the comparative study of religion. It explores the controversial "reductionist" approaches of Freud, Marx, and Emile Durkheim, then explains the program of their most outspoken opponent, the Romanian-American scholar Mircea Eliade. Further on, it examines certain newer methods and ideas advanced by the English ethnographer E.E. Evans-Pritchard and by the American Clifford Geertz, two of the present century's most celebrated names in fieldwork anthropology. Each chapter offers biographical background, exposition of the theory, comparative analysis, and critical assessment. Easily accessible to students in introductory religion courses, Seven Theories of Religion is an enlightening treatment of this controversial and fascinating subject.

Review

"Pals provides an incisive and lucid overview of seven of the most influential modern theories of religion. Cutting across disciplinary lines and cutting out disciplinary jargon, his book will prove invaluable for introductory and advanced courses on the nature of religion."--Robert Segal, Department of Religious Studies, Lancaster University

Excellent
By Jeff Jordan
This is a very good, even-handed look at some of the great thinkers of the last 150 years, and what they thought about the phenomenon of religion, whether Judaism, Christianity, Taoism, polytheism, etc..
These thinkers can be categorized as either "reductionist" or "non-reductionist." Tyler, Frazer, Freud, Marx, and Durkheim are reductionist. To Tyler and Frazer, religion can be reduced to "irrationality" or the "primitive mentality." Freud reduces religion to "neurosis." For Marx, religion is the "opium of the masses" and nothing more than a symptom of the "class struggle." Durkheim reduces religion to "the social"; that is, religion is society, society is religion.
Eliade is non-reductionist. He thinks religion cannot be reduced to psychology, sociology, economics, theology or anything else, but has to be seen as something unique in its own right. Eliade studies myths and other phenomenon of religion, compares them, tries to find universal similarities.
Evans-Pritchard and Geertz are also non-reductionist. But they don't try and "theorize" like Frazer or Eliade; they don't try to find the "origin" of religion. They are content to do in depth studies of particular culures.
The History of Religion, anthropology, ethnology--these are all fuzzy sciences. The debate over what religion is, how it came to be in various cultures, whether or not it is needed or unneeded, whether or not it is rational or irrational or just a product of the "prelogical" mind--all this still rages on amongst anthropologists, ethnologist, pyschologists, sociologists, and historians of religion. The reductionists vs. the non-reductionists. Who will win?
Overall, a good and fair-balanced read.

A good summary of religious thought.
By Jeff Nyman
This book was definitely a good summary of the thoughts of eight main historical figures (with a few others thrown in here and there). However, in many cases, the summaries were not so much about religion, but rather mythologies that sometimes masquerade as religion, at least in some people's opinions. For example, the ideas of Mircea Eliade, to me, are simply mythologies and barely constitute the basis of a veritable religion (and are pretty boring reading, to boot). And Karl Marx's ideas are so stepped in the socioeconomic realm that one cannot really call his work a "theory" of religion. On the other hand, the interesting work of Freud and Durkheim are specifically related to the subject of religion and are good additions to the book.
Thus, for me, this book is sort of a smattering of material that is worthwhile and entertaining reading - but may not be living up to the title of the book. As just one example, there is actually no discussion of the major thinkers who have put forward cognitive and biological hypotheses (for they are not "theories") of religion. (The section on Freud does not really count towards this because his work was not so much cognitive, as psychoanalytic.) Thus, for me, this book did not really discuss theories of religion, per se, but theories of various aspects of what some might call religion and others might call folklore, legend, or mythology.
This is a worthwhile book because you get a condensed view of the thoughts of many notable thinkers from wide ranges of disciplines (such as anthropology, sociology, etc.) but keep in mind that these are not "theories" of religion. They are, if anything, hypotheses and they are, if nothing else, only about relative aspects of various belief systems. If you are more concerned about the origins of religion (and thus a true "theory") I recommend a book like Pascal Boyer's "Religion Explained" or the books by Michael Shermer, such as "How We Believe."
Another problem I had with the book were the footnotes. Sometimes they contained just references and other times they contained material worth reading. In all cases, the "material worth reading" was short enough that it should have been placed in the main text. The constant shifting back and forth in this book made it a slower (and less entertaining) read for me than it probably otherwise would have been.
Overall, however, I think this was a well-researched book and contains a lot of good material. It just did not really cover the aspects of religion that I was hoping for.

This is a good, useful survey of major theories of religion.
By Tim Murphy (txm55@po.cwru.edu)
It is written primarily for an undergraduate audience and would work well as a text book. Theorists include: E.B.Tylor, Marx, Freud, Durkheim, Eliade, Evans-Pritchard, and Geertz. Several disciplines are brought together here in one volume--an advantage over other such books. Pals give a very standard reading of all these theorists. The biggest problem with the book is the exclusion of any discussion of structuralism. He also omits more current theorists such Althusser, Lacan, or Bataille. This makes the book somewhat dated and conservative. His standard explication is, however, very solid and clear.
